Chapter 51: Chapter 51: Give It Up

When class ended, Cara Preston walked over to Vera Xavier with a troubled look on her face and said, "Vera, how could you do this?"

Her actions immediately drew the attention of the entire class.

Hearing this, Vera Xavier knew Cara was about to stir up some drama. She put on a look of utter confusion and asked, "What did I do?"

Cara Preston sighed. "You told Mom and Dad you were going to study hard at school, but you weren’t even paying attention in class. You were stealing glances at the class president the whole time. Is that being fair to them?"

The moment Shane Caldwell heard this, he immediately looked over at Vera Xavier. ’So she was stealing glances at me?’ A wave of satisfaction washed over him. ’I knew I was charming, after all.’

’That means our meeting yesterday afternoon wasn’t a coincidence. She must have been following me.’

’It all makes sense,’ he thought. ’I’m so handsome and my grades are so good. How could any girl possibly not like me?’

Vera Xavier chuckled. "And how would you know I was stealing glances at the class president?"

"I saw it with my own eyes." Cara Preston’s eyes filled with a sense of grievance. "I was wondering... You used to be in love with Wesley Kane, so why did you suddenly break off the engagement? It turns out you were trying to get with the class president all along!"

At this, her expression turned accusatory. "Vera, how can you be so fickle and flighty! Take my advice: no matter how much you stare at the class president, he won’t even give you a second glance. Nothing is ever going to happen between you two. You should just give up now!"

Her words crashed over the classroom like a tidal wave, instantly sparking a chorus of scornful murmurs and gossip:

"Damn, I always thought Vera Xavier seemed so proper. Turns out she’s that kind of person!"

"A total slacker daring to go after an academic ace like the class president? She has no shame!"

"So that’s why she suddenly decided to come back to school. She had an ulterior motive all along."

"A moment of silence for her fiancé!"

"He’s the class president! As if he’d ever like someone like her!"

Shane Caldwell stood up, tilting his chin up slightly as he looked down at Vera Xavier. "Just give up. I could never possibly like you."

The corner of Vera’s mouth twitched. ’Is he insane?’

She ignored him, turning her gaze to Cara Preston instead. "So, you were also stealing glances at the class president during class!"

Cara Preston froze. Vera’s reaction was completely different from what she’d expected. ’The old Vera would have been so ashamed she’d have crawled under her desk by now. Why is she so calm today?’

Cara Preston quickly denied it. "I was not."

Vera said softly, "If you weren’t stealing glances at the class president, how would you know he never looked back at me?"

In an instant, the classroom fell silent. The eyes of every girl in the room were now fixed on Cara Preston. Her face flushed beet-red. She wanted to deny it but couldn’t find the words, only managing to stammer, "I... I wasn’t..."

Vera looked at her and said, "Cara, I know your grades are good, but that’s no excuse to stop studying. It’s really not appropriate to ignore the lecture and just stare at the class president the whole time. I actually wanted to remind you about it during class, which is why I glanced over at the president a few times. I never expected you to misunderstand me. I’m so sorry."

Her statement perfectly reframed Cara’s original accusation: it was Cara who was stealing glances at the class president, not her.

When Cara Preston heard this, her expression immediately turned foul.
