Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Sending Lovesickness

Vera Xavier stuck her tongue out playfully. Zachary Preston lowered his voice and said, "You didn’t grow up with us. Your mother doesn’t mean any harm, she’s just not quite used to you being home yet. I’m sure it’ll get better after a while. Please don’t hold a grudge against her."

"I won’t," Vera said. She understood Zachary’s difficult position. His words warmed her heart, but she also felt a pang of guilt. After all, she wasn’t his biological daughter.

"I’ll clean up. Why don’t you go upstairs and read?" Zachary said gently.

Vera nodded. Just as she was about to head upstairs, there was a knock at the door, and she hurried to answer it.

When she opened the door, she saw a mail carrier in a green uniform. He asked, "Excuse me, does Vera Xavier live here?"

Vera nodded. "That’s me."

The mail carrier gave her a curious look. She asked him, "Is there something I can help you with?"

"My third bro— Ahem, I mean, someone sent you a package. You need to sign for it." The mail carrier pushed a large box in front of Vera.

Vera froze for a moment. She didn’t know many people; she couldn’t imagine who would send her a package.

She eyed the mail carrier suspiciously. He looked very young, only in his early twenties, with a bright and sunny disposition.

When he saw her looking, he grinned and handed her a form and a pen. "Please sign here."

Vera took the pen and paper and signed. The mail carrier smiled and said, "Goodbye," then turned to leave. He glanced back at her twice before he finally went on his way.

Vera was baffled. ’Something about that mail carrier was strange,’ she thought.

Zachary called out from inside the house, "Vera, who was that?"

"The mail carrier," Vera replied. "Do they deliver packages to your door for free now?"

"Maybe Old Guang knew the package was for our family and brought it by as a favor," Zachary said, not thinking much of it.

Vera knew Old Guang was the mail carrier for their district. He lived in a single-story house right next to the compound, and he and Zachary were on good terms since Zachary had helped him out before.

Just as Vera was about to open the package, Cara Preston came home. "Who sent you a package, Sis?" she asked curiously.

"It’s probably from my family back home," Vera said, as it was the only explanation she could think of.

The moment Cara heard it was from Vera’s hometown, she lost all interest. ’What good could possibly come from the countryside?’ she thought. However, she loved nothing more than opening Vera’s things, so she immediately grabbed a small knife and sliced the package open.

But when she opened it, she was dumbfounded. Inside were several beautifully packaged sets of clothes and dresses, two pairs of in-season shoes, and a huge pile of snacks—many of which were treats Cara had seen at the supermarket but couldn’t afford.

A label was clearly affixed to every item: "For my dear sister, Vera."

Cara asked in astonishment, "Sis, since when did you have such a rich big brother?"

The moment Vera saw the clothes, she knew they were from Nathaniel Nathan. Most of them were the very outfits he had bought for her when they went shopping together!

She truly hadn’t expected him to use such a method to make his gifts to her public knowledge!

Her mind raced, and she quickly came up with an excuse. "It must be from my older cousin on my aunt’s side of the Xavier Family. He lives in Vardenburg, and his family is pretty well-off."

"Oh, really?" Cara asked, her expression probing. "How come I’ve never heard you mention you had such a rich cousin in the Xavier Family before, Sis?"
