Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Fed to the Dogs

In the Preston family, she used to get all the best things. She’d even gotten Vera’s wedding dress from Rona Langdon with just a few words.

But today, with this huge pile of nice things, none of it was for her!

’How could she not be angry, not be jealous?’

So she let out a cold snort. "I don’t want those snacks!"

She ran upstairs in a huff. Back in her room, she calmed down and finally remembered she was no longer the Preston family’s only daughter. She was just their adopted daughter—dependent on their charity.

Cara Preston took a deep breath, her hands clenching into fists. "Vera Xavier, I will ruin you and get you thrown out of the Preston family!"

Zachary Preston frowned as he watched Cara. ’It seems we’ve spoiled her too much,’ he thought. ’She’s getting more and more thoughtless.’

Vera Xavier looked at him, portioned out half of the snacks, and said, "Dad, I’ll go check on Cara."

Zachary Preston’s eyes filled with gratification. He nodded. "If she’s throwing a tantrum, just ignore her."

Vera smiled in agreement, carrying the snacks upstairs to knock on Cara’s door.

Cara had calmed down by then. She opened the door and said sweetly, "Sister, I’m sorry. I was being so childish just now."

Downstairs, Zachary Preston breathed a sigh of relief when he heard her say that.

Vera knew Cara well. The calmer she acted, the more furious she was inside. And Vera knew how to feign magnanimity, too. "I was the one who was too blunt and didn’t consider your feelings. You mustn’t be angry with me."

Cara beamed. "You’re my dearest sister. How could I ever be angry with you?"

Vera carried the pile of snacks into her room. On the surface, the two of them looked the very picture of loving sisters.

Especially Cara. Because of the snacks, she even offered to share her tattered and filthy cloth doll, one she’d had for years. Vera was disgusted and refused outright.

After Vera left, Cara kicked the doll to the floor, then glanced at the considerable pile of snacks on her desk and sneered.

Vera didn’t care what Cara thought in the slightest. She had given half the snacks to Cara for two reasons: first, to not make things difficult for Zachary, and second, to maintain her image as a good sister and avoid giving people cause for gossip later.

’As for those snacks, she might as well have fed them to a dog.’

Still, she had to admire Nathaniel Nathan. To think he’d come up with such a way to get these things to her. She remembered the "deliveryman" furtively looking around and immediately realized he was one of Nathaniel’s men.

Her lips curved into a small smile as she looked at the clothes and shoes. ’He really is thoughtful.’

In her past life, she’d always found him cold and unapproachable. She had assumed he only truly fell for her after she’d built a successful career. She never imagined he would be this attentive to her so early on.

It would be a lie to say her heart wasn’t moved.

Rona Langdon didn’t find out about Vera’s "rich cousin" in Vardenburg until the next afternoon. Her eyes immediately lit up, and she began plotting how to use Vera to get some money from this "rich cousin."

The problem was, she’d just had a massive fight with Vera. That little bitch was surprisingly stubborn; no matter how much Rona tormented her these past few days, she refused to give in.

She began to wonder if she should swallow her pride and cozy up to Vera, trying to wheedle out more information about the "rich cousin" to further her goal of lining her own pockets.
