The Chef Rules the Last Days-Chapter 105 - 102: Happiness District
Chapter 105: Chapter 102: Happiness District
Su Mo smiled and slowly stepped back.
"Let’s go refuel," she said, looking up beside Lu Chen.
The man nodded, a military vehicle appeared out of nowhere, they got in, and the barriers on the bridge were pulled aside. They drove off, disappearing from Li Chuan and the others’ sight.
Before long, the people Li Chuan had just called also arrived by car, and he leisurely got into the vehicle and followed them.
"Brother Sheng... what should we do?"
"Aren’t you going to drive? Follow them!"
Using the last bit of fuel, Lu Chen followed them through the town’s streets and stopped in front of a large gate named Happiness District.
Four people got out of the jeep ahead. One of them, a woman with long, middle-parted hair, kept glancing at their car, her eyes filled with fear.
If it weren’t for their use of superpowers that she detected, except for a woman on the modified vehicle, she wouldn’t have sensed anyone else in the car.
The originally open gate of the community was tightly closed off by a thick iron gate, which had a small hole in it. Several armed men stood on top of the wall beside it.
Seeing that it was Ling Fang bringing people back, the iron gate was manually pulled open from one side to let them in.
As Lu Chen drove in, the guards on the wall asked, "Are the cars behind you also with your group?"
He simply shook his head and pressed the gas pedal to drive in, saying, "Don’t know them."
Inside was a typical residential complex, crowded with people. Aside from the driveways, both sides were lined with residential buildings marked with numbers, each seemingly filled with inhabitants.
Su Mo noticed that in this part of the district, there wasn’t a single trace of greenery. All the land had been flattened and turned into concrete. In the middle of the orderly buildings, there was a huge dried-up swimming pool, and people were playing badminton inside it.
"Their quality of life seems quite high," Zhao Changsheng said, sitting in the back with his legs crossed.
"Hmm," Su Mo responded softly.
Inside the jeep ahead, the woman with the middle part said, "Keep these two groups separate, away from the oil area."
"I know," Ling Fang nodded.
The car circled the swimming pool and stopped beside the building marked as block 9. Holding her son, Ling Fang spoke a few words to the people in the car. After they left, she signaled for Su Mo and others to get out of the car, and Su Mo and Lu Chen exchanged glances before leading their group out.
The vehicle was then retracted back into space.
There was only one elevator and a stairwell on the first floor. Su Mo followed inside, and Ling Fang, holding her son, had him press the elevator.
This building was twelve stories high, with a tiny red-light flashing surveillance camera on top, and one of the buttons below was locked with a square iron box.
Lu Chen swept a glance seemingly unintentionally, then withdrew his gaze.
Su Mo, seeing the lighted indicator, exclaimed in surprise, "You still have electricity to operate?"
"We have an independent generator," Ling Fang stated.
"Does every building have its own generator?" Li Qian also seemed surprised.
"Hmm," Ling Fang simply nodded and said no more.
The elevator doors opened, and they squeezed inside. Jianxiong’s massive body almost took up half the space, Zhao Changsheng looked at him disdainfully, and the two glared at each other again.
The elevator stopped on the sixth floor.
It was a two-apartment-per-elevator layout. Ling Fang put down her son and opened the door on the left signaling them to enter.
"You all rest here for a bit. I’ll come over after I finish handling things," he said.
Once they had all entered, the door was closed, and noises of another door opening came from across the hall along with a boy loudly calling for his grandma.
"That mother and son live across from us," Jianxiong confirmed.
The furniture inside was all tidy and spotless. Li Qian helped Su Niang sit down on the sofa.
Su Mo tried flipping the room’s light switch; it didn’t have electricity. It seemed that only the elevator was operational, but there were many candles placed on the dining table and the coffee table.
As she and Lu Chen walked through the three-bedroom layout and came out of the bedroom, the strangeness was apparent in her eyes. She looked up at Lu Chen, "Can a place be this clean if no one lives here every day?"
The man shook his head, his mind deep in thought.
There was a huge floor-to-ceiling window on one side of the living room. Zhao Changsheng bent over at the window, looking downstairs where people of all ages were peacefully walking and chatting. His fox-like eyes narrowed, "Aren’t they too at ease?"
Li Qian walked to the window and looked out, also finding it strange. His spiritual power unfolded like a vast net but was quickly noticed and blocked by someone. The two were evenly matched, and it was unclear who was who at first.
He stood still, competing with someone in the Space with his spiritual power.
Sounds of rustling came from the door. Su Mo walked to the door and pressed her ear against it, hearing the elevator closing. She grabbed the handle and opened the door.
Ling Ye had just sent Ling Fang away and was hooking the door handle to close it when he saw her, his little face slightly flushed.
"Sister Su," he had just heard what this older sister was called, and he called out to her tenderly.
When Su Mo heard him call, her heart softened. This little boy had bangs that reached his eyebrows, had a clear and handsome face, and his especially round eyes were lively; the sharp chin added a touch of frailty. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"Did your mom go out?" she asked as she walked over and crouched beside him, touching his head.
From behind him in the room, some fragmented moans of pain could be heard.
"Yes, I’m here to look after grandma," Ling Ye nodded and turned his head to look into the room, his expression a bit dim.
"May I go in and see your grandma? Maybe I can help her," Su Mo said sincerely.
Ling Ye hesitated for a moment then nodded. He took her hand and led her inside, while Lu Chen emerged from across the hall and followed them in.
The room was warmly decorated, with some leftover food covered by a net on the dining table. They walked through the entryway and the living room, entering the first room on the left.
Upon seeing his grandma, Ling Ye immediately let go of her hand and rushed to the bedside, his face full of worry, "Grandma."
The woman lying on the bed had half-white hair and her face was old and sunken. She was so thin that only her skeleton seemed left. Hearing her grandson calling, she barely opened her eyes, "Is that you, Leaf?"
Her cloudy eyes moved around, and two unfamiliar figures entered her blurry sight.
"Who are these two..?"
Ling Ye grabbed her hand, which looked as withered and ugly as a chicken claw, and choked up, "Friends of mom."
After the incident, nobody had told this dying old lady about it, and he smartly avoided the topic.
"Hello," she struggled to smile and greet them, "At first glance... I thought it was the Bodhisattva descended. You both look so distinguished!"
Su Mo sat by the bed, smiled at her, and looked the old woman up and down before asking, "Grandma, what illness do you have?"
"Leukemia," Ling Ye said, his head down and expression depressed.
Su Mo looked up at Lu Chen. This disease was difficult even before the apocalypse, and now it was incurable. If it were a physical injury, she could have secretly helped...
