The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 62: Sixty-one
With the sun’s rays spread over the town, not only did it woke up the town folks, but it also woke up those arrived at Philipia before midnight.
[Ding!]
[Ding!]
[Ding!]
The black haired Countess stirs in the bed, woken from her restless sleep by the continuous noise of a steady notification sound coming from the system. Something was laying on her stomach, holding her down.
[Ding!]
[Ding!]
Her eyes slowly open, blinking her bloody eyes close and open as she tries to pinpoint the origin of the sound, her mind foggy from lack of sleep.
The sound continues, persistent and resonating, its monotonous rhythm cutting through the still air.
The woman groans in frustration, rubbing her eyes and pushing herself up into a sitting position. She felt something fall to her lap as she tries to focus her ears on the sound, desperately trying to figure out where it’s coming from.
The sun’s warmth, shining through the window, spreads over her face as she sits still on the bed, making her rub her eyes and taking in the unfamiliar surroundings of the small room.
Outside, she can barely hear the sound of birds chirping and the distant shouts of people beginning their day.
[Ding!]
[Ding!]
[Ding!]
She let out a yawn and runs her hand down her face to rub off the remaining sleep from her body, feeling the cool morning air on her skin coming from the slightly ajar window beside the bed.
Finally, Jannah was sober enough to look at the noisy system that woke her up from her slumber.
Only to stare at it with lips agape, shock and disbelief crossing her features.
[Mission (Inspection of the territory) is unlocked!]
[Side mission (Inspection of houses) unlocked!]
[Side mission (Clean the remaining of town Rye) unlocked!]
[Side mission (Plan the sleeping arrangements) unlocked!]
[Side mission (Drafting lodging houses) unlocked!]
"What the hell?!" Jannah exclaimed, glaring menacingly at the system, "Why do I have so much missions now?! I just went to sleep and this is the first thing you’re showing me?!"
Her voice was loud and full of anger, on the verge of grabbing the system by its side to shake it violently.
[Ding!]
[System will reward you handsomely once the player have completed every single missions given to her.]
"That’s not the point." Jannah growled, "The last time I received my rewards, I felt dizzy and lightheaded. I even coughed out blood! You should have given me one mission instead and waited for me to finish it!"
[System initializing...]
"What now?" Jannah frowned, reading the text written before her eyes.
[System initialization complete.]
"Don’t give me more crap to deal with." Jannah rubbed her temples and let out a exhausted sigh. She barely made it through the morning and had just woken up, but she already felt tired.
All because of the system.
[Ding!]
[System has no regard for the matter at hand.]
Jannah’s eyebrows furrowed as she read the text, making her scowl, "Excuse me?"
[Ding!]
[System has given the player’s action and statement a pass, and the player has been granted forgiveness from any punishment.]
"I didn’t even say anything that worth being punished for!" Jannah exclaimed once more as the crease between her eyebrows deepened, "And are you mocking me right now? Why do I feel like you’re responding to every words I’m saying? You’re not even like this before!"
She felt aggitated for some reason, making her unable to contain her frustration, her voice rising with each sentence, her face flushed.
Suddenly, she hears an annoyed groan beside her, making her pause to look whatever was shifting beneath the covers.
To her surprise, Jeriel popped her head out of the cover to glare at her, her expression turning annoyed for a moment before she lets out a soft, irritated grunt.
"What are you yelling for? It’s too early to be this noisy, sis." Jeriel grumbled, tightening her arm around Jannah’s middle and letting her head fall on her pillow.
Jannah realized that the something that fell on her lap earlier was her little sister’s arm.
The Countess’s expression changes instantly, her irritation giving way to guilt and remorse as she sees her little sister’s sleepy, confused ocean blue looking up at her.
"Sorry." Jannah sighed deeply, "It’s just that.. This damn system gave me five missions the moment I woke up."
Jeriel’s eyes open widened, jolting awake by the words she heard from her big sister.
She sits up in bed, her heart pounding with surprise and confusion, her mind still dazed from sleep.
Jannah watched as her little sister rub her eyes that was still half-closed with sleep, her white hair sticking up in all directions— having a massive and disastrous bed head.
Her expression softens at the sight of her, making her guilt eat her conscience for disturbing Jeriel’s sleep.
"Five missions?" Jeriel’s voice sounded shocked and taken aback, "Are you serious? It wasn’t even that long when you finished your previous one and it was just yesterday, too!"
[Ding!]
[System does not require the Player’s sister’s thoughts to be known and kindly asks for her to step out.]
Jannah glared at the system, ignoring it for the sake of her sanity.
"Apparently, it gave me missions about the things I’ll have to do which is inspections and planning the lodging arrangements of our people." Jannah sighed out, looking away from the system.
"Is that a good thing?" Jeriel’s eyebrows furrowed and let herself plop back down to the bed.
"It is." Jannah confirmed and assured her little sister at the same time, "Although, I have a side mission about cleaning the remaining of the previous town and drafting a.. Uh, a house? I don’t know what that means, but I’m guessing the cleaning missions means that I have to get rid of the folks of Rye that Merlot locked up."
Jeriel let out a quiet hum, sounding like she’s drifting off to sleep, "I can help you with that if you want. I’ll take care of them while you do your inspection."
"That sounds good." Jannah agreed.
She doesn’t have to do the missions herself as long as she can get the tasks done. It doesn’t matter if it was completed by accident or by someone else.
The previous missions about rescuing her people and rescuing the locked up women and children were enough proof for that. The ladies killed the men she spared and got the rewards for completing the mission.
Wouldn’t it be the same for this mission, too?
"Go back to sleep." Jeriel grabbed Jannah by the collar and pulled her back to bed, immediately wrapping her arms around Jannah’s head, "Do the inspection later.. Let’s sleep more."
Jannah didn’t fight her little sister and glanced at the system wordlessly, not moving from her position.
Jeriel had thrown her leg over Jannah’s stomach and tightened her arms around her head, making it hard for Jannah to get away from Jeriel or get up from the bed so she accepted her fate instead.
Map. She thought to herself, waiting for the feature to pop up in the air.
The said map materializes in front of the Countess, a flat, two-dimensional representation of the surrounding area.
The map is detailed and colorful with different areas labeled and marked in precise detail.
The Countess studies the map carefully, her bloody red eyes darting from one point to another as she tries to make out the right house to start the inspection with.
Despite the map’s help, she had a hard time to plan out the inspection because of the blue dots all over the map. There are three to six dots inside of each houses, bustling around the small structure.
It was distracting for the eyes because it looked like they were dancing.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The sound of the knock on the door, although unexpected, doesn’t faze Jannah.
She continues to watch the blue dots all over the map, calmly responding to the knock, her voice steady as she calls out, "Who is it?"
"It’s Kirie, my lady." The person behind the door revealed her identity.
Jannah hums and looks away from the map at the sound of her maid’s voice, raising an eyebrow as she shot a glance towards the door.
"Come in." Jannah calls out in a neutral tone, removing the map from her view and settling herself in a comfortable position in her little sister’s arms.
She watched the door swings open slowly as her green haired maid, Kirie, enters the room, carrying some clothes in her arms with a small polite smile in her face. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Kirie closed the door behind her, just in time for Jannah to see Duke Eulicies walking past the room.
"I brought your clothes and Lady Jeriel’s. This is another pair of clothing Lady Viola had stitched for you. Miss Lucienta and Miss Lilo will wash the clothes you previously wore today so they told me to let you wear this one, my lady." Kirie stated with a calm voice, keeping her head low.
"What time is it?" Jannah asked as she turned her head to look at Kirie.
"It’s almost noon, my lady." The maid smiled at her, "Sir Aran is already cooking something for you, Lady Jeriel, Marques Ebonics, Marquess Ebonics, and Duke Zacharias."
Jannah stiffly nodded her head, unable to move much because of her little sister’s limbs.
"Jeriel." Jannah tapped Jeriel’s arm before she pushed her little sister off her, "We have to get up now."
