The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 67: Sixty-six
[The inventory feature allows a list of items that the character is currently carrying to be stored. The inventory will be organized in limited category— consumables, weapons, clothes, companions, and items. This feature allows the system’s players to quickly and easily manage their items and check their inventory whenever and wherever.]
"So you can store items in it?" Jeriel wondered, pushing a pillow towards her big sister, "Try storing this one?"
The Rafelon sisters had excuse themselves from everyone once they got inside the mansion and was quick to run towards their room, locked the door and checked the new feature.
The system’s new feature’s appearance was mostly black, but with some hints of red.
The inventory’s border was sleek and seemingly look soft with a sharp, angular design and mostly has dark color palette which has an occasional flicker of thin veins of red appearing randomly.
Despite its menacing appearance, the system was easy to understand since it has a search function on the upper left corner that allows Jannah to find specific items by putting the item’s name.
"I have to touch this and then.." Jannah picked up the pillow and thought of it being stored inside the inventory.
The action was immediate, Jannah watched as something red envelope the pillow with a bright glow before it disappeared from her view. Then, from the corner of her eyes, a small image of pillow appeared on her inventory.
"Woah.." Jeriel was amazed, seeing that a large pillow like that disappeared into thin air right before her eyes.
"You’re amazing." Jeriel murmured in wonder, lips parted in bewilderment.
"It’s not me though." Jannah was quick to brush her little sister’s words, staring at the inventory where the pillow was stored, she thought of bringing out the pillow and saw the image disappear from slot before it appeared in front of her.
Plop.
The pillow appeared in the air, just above Jeriel’s head, and fell down with an almost quiet thump on her little sister.
"Okay." Jannah nodded her head in understanding, "I think I can handle storing and bringing out things from this new feature without much trouble."
Jeriel pushed the pillow off her and looked at her big sister, "How many items can you store in there?"
"I don’t know." Jannah shrugged her shoulders and tapped the exit button of the inventory.
"Why don’t we try now?" Jeriel puffed her cheeks out, crossing her arms and shot Jannah a pout, acting like a child.
"Because I need to go out and bring those men with me. We’re going around the town to check the perimeter, remember?" Jannah simply smiled at her little sister’s way as she turned around to walk towards the door.
"Make sure to clean the remaining of Rye, okay? I want to see if it will work like last time." She turned the doorknob, unlocking it and swing the door open.
"Good evening, my lady."
"A lovely evening to you, Countess."
Jannah flinched in her spot, eyes wide in shock, heart racing in fear, and breath caught in her throat from seeing Kirie and Duke Eulicies in front of the door, not expecting to see them.
"Goodness—" Jannah’s face twisted in a startled one, placing a palm on her chest, "You scared me."
"Oh, I’m sorry." Kirie’s face twisted in worry with her lips twitching downwards, "I didn’t mean to startle you, my lady."
"It was also not my intention to startle you." Duke Eulicies stated, looking down on the floor to avoid the Countess’s eyes, "I came here to ask you about your patrol around the perimeter."
Immediately after startling her, it was obvious that they felt bad and the guilt setting in with their shoulders slumping forward.
What’s funnier for Jannah’s eyes was the fact that they simultaneously lowered their heads, almost looking like a kicked puppy after uttering words of apology.
She wasn’t mad at them, but the two were acting like she had screamed at them.
"It’s alright." Jannah forced a smile as she wave her hand dismissively, "I’m about to go out to go to the gate. Are you two planning to go with me again?"
At the mention of her dismissing their sudden appearances, Duke Eulicies and Kirie brightened up.
"Yes, my lady."
"If you’ll allow me, Countess."
Kirie smiled at her while Duke Eulicies placed a hand on his chest and lowered his head.
"Great. The more people to come with me, the merrier, right?" Jannah stepped out of the room with the maid and the Duke moving aside so Jannah can walk out.
"Take care, sis!" Jeriel called out to Jannah before she closed the door.
The look of amusement in Jeriel’s face was the last thing Jannah saw before she left the mansion to start her patrol. Jannah knew that her little sister will tease her about it later on, but she could careless about it.
As they made their way to the gate, a couple of town folks have stopped on their tracks to greet Jannah and wish her luck— adults and children alike.
"A fine evening, Countess."
"Good evening, Countess!"
"Hello, Lady Countess!"
"Good luck outside, my lady!"
"Please be careful on your way out, my lady."
"I wish you luck, pretty and rich lady!"
"Take care, beautiful lady!"
A smile made its way on Jannah’s face as she hears the cheery tone in the children’s voices. Sounding like they haven’t experienced the harsh and brutal reality of horror outside the safety of the town’s wall.
Good. Jannah mused to herself as she continued to walk towards the gate. They need to keep their innocence and enthusiasm for a little longer.
The children in her past life didn’t act like children and has been shaped by the harsh environment around them. Everytime she saw any child, her heart breaks for them.
They didn’t manage to experience a peaceful and happy childhood because of the outbreak. They’re always on the run, always cautious, always mindful— just doing everything they can to survive.
This time, however, she will do her best to shelter them, but will train them just in case something happens in the town.
"My lady!" Anthony exclaimed, calling out to her as she approach the gate.
Almost every knight had turned their head to look at her, each having a different expression plastered on their faces.
"Can you get the men out of their cell? Except for the two men whom I said should be placed on a separate cell." Jannah was quick to tell the task to Anthony, earning a firm nod from the said man.
"Understood!" Anthony responded and walked past her, a few knights had run after him to give him assistance, meticulously and diligently doing their job without being told.
"A lovely evening to you, my lady." Marco greeted his master with a bow of his head, "I have prepared your arrows. Would you like me to prepare another just in case?"
"That would be appreciated." Jannah smiled at him which he returned almost immediately.
Jannah watched as Marco walked away to go to the wooden cart where a dozen of arrows are stored and started to pick up arrows, examining them before he placed them on his free arm.
Jannah looked away, looking at the gates instead. She noticed the added logs behind it, ensuring that it wouldn’t be pushed back by a horde of undeads.
Just as she was about to examine the handiwork of her people, a series of complains and yelling erupted in the air.
"Move!"
"Ouch! Don’t push me!"
"Stop dragging me, bastard!"
"Can’t you be more gentle?! We’re both men, aren’t we?!"
She turned around, curiosity got the best of her, and looked at the source of the noises.
Her precious knights, their expressions neutral and focused, walked briskly towards the town gates, leading several exhausted protesters behind them.
Each knight had a tight hold on a rope that was tied around the protesters’ wrists, securing them in place and ensuring them that they won’t run away.
With each heavy footsteps, the protesters stumbled and struggled to keep up with the pace of the knights, their movements slow and sluggish from both exhaustion and hunger.
The knights gave them no respite, their gaze fixed straight ahead as they made their way to the town gates, eager to be praised by their master who’s waiting patiently for them.
When they reached the gates, the protesters looked up at the noblewoman and let out a collective grown of disdain.
"How was your rest?" Jannah smiled at them, eyeing each individual with a raised eyebrow.
"You don’t know anything!" A woman exclaimed, tugging on the ropes that binds her arms behind her, "You put us in that hideous place all because of what?!"
"Because you were disrespectful and selfish?" Jannah answered, tilting her head.
"What’s selfish about not wanting to share our houses to your people?!" The man beside the woman hissed, glaring menacingly towards Jannah.
At his outburst, Duke Eulicies unsheathed his sword, narrowing his eyes towards him.
Seeing the Duke’s reaction, the protesters grew silent. Swallowing their pride as they lower their heads, not wanting for their life to meet its end.
"Seriously?" Jannah’s eyebrows furrowed when she saw what happened, "You’ll shut your mouth because of Duke Zacharias, but will be against of what I do or say?"
It’s Duke Eulicies turn to frown, turning his attention to Jannah, "Can you repeat what you just said, my lady?"
"No, instead, we’ll go out now and start our patrol." Jannah glared at the protesters.
