The Countess Lives Twice in the Apocalypse-Chapter 95: Ninety-four
The night rolled in quickly when Jannah was occupied with the thought of how to catch a thief. She had catched people who tried to embezzle her money before, but there’s no money included this time.
It’s food.
Jannah let out a sigh, rubbing her temples as she glanced at the map, her eyes catching the sight of the blue dots moving around the town hall’s main room before they moved to the staircase.
She was left alone by Count Nige, Princess Huenazia, Kirie, and Duke Eulicies for the rest of the day which gave her enough time to finish the paperwork.
However, it seems that Marques Ebonics have told them about what she told him and Jeriel because all of them are marching towards the office with an alarming speed, making her grow stiff in her chair.
The door to the office slammed open, the hinges crying and creaking in protest, and if she listened intently, she swore she heard something crack.
Her eyes landed on the person who slammed the door open, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Was there any need to hurt the previous door on your way in?" Jannah asked, shaking her head in disappointment on her little sister’s dramatic antics.
"Shush! We’re here to question you regarding your motives! Not the other way around." Jeriel exclaimed, walking inside the office and dragging a wooden chair on her way to Jannah’s desk, "We finished everything you asked for us to do so it’s your turn to do the end of your bargain."
Jannah watched her little sister approach the desk, dragging the chair beside her seat and Jeriel unceremoniously plop herself down on it.
She let out a sigh, her eyes shifting from her little sister to the person who closed the door.
Marco looked like he wanted to say something, but was occupied with fixing the door. Jannah was right, something broke and it looks like it was the door itself.
"Lady Jeriel is correct, Countess Rafelon." Princess Huenazia agreed with Jeriel’s statement as she took a seat on the couch, "We heard from Marques Ebonics that you were planning to leave the town next week."
"All of us are your trusted allies, you would not let me know about your plans if you don’t want me to spread it among the others." Merlot explained, telling Jannah his reason why he told the information to certain people registered in the social bond.
"Ah, no, no, it’s okay." Jannah said, waving a hand in the air to dismiss the tense atmosphere inside the room, "I did tell you about it because I wanted you to spread the information. I forgot to contact everyone through the link because I was occupied."
Merlot perked up, the previous anxious expression on his vanishing and getting replaced with a relieved one.
"Just make sure to not share every information I’m going to tell all of you next time, am I understood? I might tell something to one person that I wouldn’t tell to the rest so be mindful of your actions." Jannah stated, leaning back in her chair.
"As you wish, Countess."
"I understand, my lady."
"If you say so, Jannah.’
"I completely understand, my lady."
A series of responses echoed in the air, saying that they agreed and understood what she just said which made Jannah nod her head in approval.
"Now, let’s proceed to the meeting." Jannah hums out, her eyes scanning the room before her gaze lands on Marco who was busy holding the door up against him, "Arthur, if you still have energy left in you, create a wall in the doorway."
"As you wish, my lady." Arthur said, walking away from Lucienta to create a wooden wall on the door way.
A block of wood sprouted from the floor and immediately thrusted up to the ceiling, successfully blocking anyone from eves dropping or from peeking inside the office.
"Thank you." Jannah nodded her head then turned back to the people sitting on the couch, "I received something from the system that I can use as a means for quick transportation, but I can’t use it for now because the system said I haven’t unlocked it."
"You haven’t unlocked it, but it gave you something that relates to it?" Jeriel asked, stealing everyone’s word from their mouth.
"Unfortunately." Jannah said, sighing deeply for the nth time that day, "So, I’m planning to go back to the capital to see if I will be able to lock the feature while also looking for food and other supplies."
Someone raised a hand, making every eyes inside the room snap at that person.
"I’m a little lost here.. But I want to be included.. So, what is this system you speak of?" Count Nige asked, blinking his golden irises towards the woman he likes.
Oh, dear.. You haven’t put him in any social bond? Clara asked through the mental link, a worried crease between her eyebrows starting to creep into her face.
Countess.. Would you like me to knock him out in this instance? Duke Eulicies asked through the link as well, his purple eyes glancing at her discreetly from his spot beside the white haired man.
Just give me the word, my lady, and I will take care of him immediately. Arthur stated, his voice loud and clear in the back of Jannah’s mind.
"Calm down, Arthur, Duke Zacharias, and Clara." Jannah said, a low grumble of exhaustion can be heard in her voice as the three people whom she mentioned perked up.
"Count Nige, I’ll be explaining things to you soon, but for now, sit still and look pretty, okay?" Jannah stated, the tone of her voice leaving no room for disagreement or rebuttal which made the Count flush lightly, a red hue creeping into his neck as he nodded his head.
"Good." Jannah praised him for listening then redirected the topic back to its rightful track, "According to the report I received, a few of our stocks went missing yesterday and today."
Silence.
Everyone seemed to comprehend what she just said because all of them continued to stare at her.
Then..
An audible gasp somehow echoed in the room, the sound cutting through the silence like a sharp knife, "We have a thief in this town?"
Jannah nodded her head, "That seems to be the case, but I haven’t seen nor heard anything about it until today."
"We’re not only worrying about the lodgings, rations, and the monsters outside the wall, but now, we also need to watch out for thieves?" Princess Huenazia asked, a frown settling in her face.
"Unfortunately, this won’t be the first time if we don’t start to address it." Jannah stated as she leaned forward, "Marco, I want you to assign a single person in every storage room in this town with a knight as their partner."
Marco nodded his head in understanding, "Yes, my lady. I will work on it as soon as possible." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Great." Jannah hummed out and turned to Merlot, "Make a schedule for the training, have one of the knights teach the children and have two others for the adults."
"I understand." Merlot said, his voice firm and sharp, a look of determination crossing his features.
"The expansion of this town will start as early as midnight so the departure for the capital won’t be delayed." Jannah started before looking at Arthur, "Arthur, I have a few people from the group of women from Rye and from the knights that have the same skill as yours, take them as your worker."
The knight nodded his head and placed a hand on his chest, "I will do what you commanded with your expectations in mind, my lady."
"The people of this town need to be split for daytime and nighttime duty soon, I need someone to work on it tomorrow. Any volunteers?" Jannah inquired, looking around the room to see if anyone would raise a hand.
"I volunteer." The red haired princess raised her hand, a glint of eagerness and sincerity flashing in her sunset colored eyes.
"Thank you." Jannah shot her a small, thankful smile, "I’ll leave it in your care then."
Princess Huenazia’s face flushed, a red hue creeping to her cheeks just like how it did to Count Nige earlier, and she nodded her head as she looked away from Jannah.
The Countess merely ignored the reaction she got and scanned the room for a brief moment, then, she cleared her throat.
"As for the people I will bring to the capital with me, I’m still not sure." Jannah said, finally answering everyone’s question that they have been itching to ask since they walked inside the office.
Jeriel’s eyebrows furrowed as she opened her mouth to say something to her big sister.
"Ah, of course, Jeriel will be coming with me. That’s out of the question." Jannah was quick to add on to her previous statement, making Jeriel close her mouth and bite her tongue.
Merlot raised a hand and asked, "Then those who want to come with you? What do they need to do?"
Jannah shrugged her shoulders to answer her question which made Marques Ebonics grumble something incoherent under his breath.
"I know that some of you want to accompany me, but I assigned work to all of you so if you don’t finish it six days from now, expect yourself to be here, guarding the town." Jannah tutted out with a small, playful smile.
