Chapter 75: You Have a Wife Now

At Corvus Palace

"Since when did you become this carefree, Nikolai?"

Nikolai already saw this coming as soon as he and his mother reached his private study. Lazily sitting on his chair, he calmly replied, "Mother, please don't overreact. I really don't see the point of following this kind of tradition."

He shrugged as he waved her off, "Isn't it written in the prophecy already that I'm bound to have children that will keep our kingdom safe in the first place?"

"Hah! And how many times do I have to remind you that we don't even know the exact time it will happen?" his mother retorted. "We're not even sure if your Queen right now will be the one to bear your children. For all we know, there's a high possibility that it's in the next generation of Wards to come!"

Nikolai shook his head in disagreement. "She was born that day, Mother… When the blue moon blocked the sun from view. The same day when Dahlia died…" he stated. "Everything is connected in this complicated puzzle, Mother. Starting with how my vampiric urges began during the union of her parents…"

Rania frowned at his statement. There was a moment of silence as the two of them stared at one another.

Nikolai wanted to add more regarding Mineah's curses and how he could possibly end them as well, but he figured that those were too personal for him to disclose to his mother. And besides, he only knew of one curse that she had. The others currently remained unknown to him, but Seer Beirut clearly mentioned that he could end every curse that Mineah might have.

After a bit of time, Rania let out a loud sigh before she said, "Alright then. For now, make sure that you strictly follow the traditions. All eyes are currently on you, especially with how you accepted the cursed princess to be our new Queen."

She sternly reminded, "The Wagner and Rossi Clans are colluding together, and are just waiting for the right opportunity to overthrow the Ichor clan off the throne."

"I understand, Mother. Please relax. Don't overthink this too much," Nikolai hummed with a smile. "I can handle everything. Mine and I will work together to keep the peace and order in our kingdom…"

"Mine?!" Rania burst with a frown.

"Yes," he cheekily grinned. "She's Mine, so I'm calling her Mine, Mother."

Rania's expression softened as she noted, "It's been a while since I saw you smile and chuckle genuinely like that, son."

"I know, Mother. I'm honestly surprised myself," he humorously answered. "My jaw has gotten used to my stoic expression for so long that suddenly smiling and laughing often feels like I'll make my jaw fall off at any moment."

"I'm glad then, Son. And I do hope that she will continue to make you happy," she sincerely smiled. "Above all else, that's the only thing that matters. However…"

Nikolai lifted an eyebrow as he noted his mother's hanging words. "What is it, Mother?"

"Rosela… how long do you plan to have her wait?" Rania asked as she sat on the chair opposite his.

Nikolai closed his eyes. Comfortably laying his head on the backrest of his chair, he mulled over his words as he tried to find a proper response.

"What about Rosela, Mother?" he naively murmured.

"She has sacrificed so much for you already, Nikolai. And we both know about her feelings for you. The least you can do for everything she has done is to make her your mistress," Rania firmly pointed out. "She even chose to stay here with you. Even going against her own family… Do I really have to spell everything out for you, Son?"

Nikolai could feel his mother's frustrations with how grave her tone sounded. As much as he wanted to assuage her, his heart just wasn't in it.

"You already know my answer to that, Mother. I thought I'd already made myself clear the last time you brought this up," Nikolai murmured as he slowly opened his eyes. "But in case you forgot…"

He looked at his mother closely and firmly stated, "I have no plans in following the footsteps of my father in getting mistresses. You yourself know very well how chaotic such an arrangement can be. One woman is enough for me to handle. Mine is enough…"

"I'm not asking you to follow in the footstep of your Father, Nikolai! Just one mistress in Rosalia is enough," his mother insisted. "She deserves at least that as a recognition for loving you thoughtlessly…"

Nikolai swallowed the urge to sigh. He indeed acknowledged everything Rosela did and was doing for him. He was indebted to her and he was deeply grateful. In fact, he would be willing to repay her using everything in his power… All except making her his woman.

"Mother, how do you think I can face Dahlia if I do that?" Nikolai retorted with an annoyed grumble. "Please stop this nonsense. I can give anything to Rosela, but not this. Whatever position she wants in the royal court, she could have, but she will not be my mistress. For heaven's sake, Mother. She's Dahlia's twin!"

In fact, if not for her blood, he would've definitely had her stay as far away from him as possible. Rosela was a living reminder of his painful past. A reminder of how he robbed Dahlia of her precious life!

There was another deafening silence in the room, and Nikolai could hear the sighs of his mother as she shook her head.

After some time, she finally stood up and said, "I will leave you now. Get changed and attend to your court officials at the royal feast tonight."

She let out another sigh as she grumbled, "I have no energy left to hear their complaints. You're the one who created this uproar by bringing the cursed princess in as our new queen, so you get to deal with them instead."

Nodding, Nikolai got up from his chair as well. "Thank you, Mother. For everything…" he sincerely stated. "I know you're also having a tough time filling in for me, but please… Just this once… can you deal with matters regarding Rosela?"

Rania raised a brow as she snorted, "Why should I? You have a wife now… Let her deal with it."

She let out another scoff as she added, "Rosela is like a daughter to me already, Nikolai. She has done nothing but be good to please you, me, and the entire Clan. The last thing I would want is to see the woman get hurt. So don't tell me to handle her…"

With slumped shoulders, Nikolai watched his mother's retreating back. It wasn't like he couldn't understand where his mother was coming from, but he was more worried about his wife getting entangled with matters regarding Rosela.

"Rosela…" he weakly murmured. "What should I do with you?"
