The Daily Life Of A Cyberpunk Magician-Chapter 603 - 308: Died in War
Hughes...
He was worried about what life would be like after he truly killed someone, worried about whether any company would accept him after he resigned from Sages, worried about truly becoming a Wanderer and ending up on the streets.
So, he didn’t dare to act.
More accurately, he wasn’t willing to act, he just hid this reluctance behind his fear.
Even though he had been subjected to such humiliation at Sages, even though he could now take revenge by killing the Demon who had taken his dear friend’s life, he still was unwilling.
Through the mask, Jiang Shu witnessed all of this.
At this moment, he finally realized something.
It seemed that the Character Card system didn’t just enslave the people of Lonely City in terms of their positions, it also bound their spirits.
The current Hughes, lacking even such bloodlust, it was no wonder he had ended up in this state.
Jiang Shu sighed as well, feeling a mix of pity for Hughes’s misfortune and anger at his lack of resistance.
However, he wasn’t going to really force Hughes to do anything; after all, it was all Hughes’s own choice, and Jiang Shu didn’t want to interfere.
"You guys hurry up, come find me!" the chairman shouted into his communication device, having entered a sort of hysterical state. He could clearly feel death closing in on him.
Although Hughes had not chosen to kill him, he was very aware that the people from the Deception Group would not let him go.
He had to make use of this final bit of time.
"We are looking for you, but..." the voice over the communicator hesitated slightly.
"But what? What’s wrong?!" The chairman felt the hesitation and pressed the issue without a second thought.
"There are people blocking our way," the voice on the other end finally said, "it’s the people from the nearby streets. They are watching the live broadcast, they know our purpose and have recognized our clothes, then they formed a human wall and blocked the way, we simply can’t get through."
"Blocked..." The chairman paused, he hadn’t expected such a turn of events.
It was like finding oneself in a downpour when the roof is already leaking. At this most critical moment, those lowlifes actually did such a thing.
"Drive through them! I’ll take responsibility for anything that happens!" the chairman bellowed again. He kept talking, "Or give them money, pay them money, a hundred thousand each, let them help you look, hurry!"
"I understand." The head of the supervision team instinctively responded over the phone, and then he turned to look at the sea of people blocking the street, swallowing hard, unsure of what to do. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
After a slight hesitation, he still pulled out a megaphone from the car, poked his head through the sunroof, and called out, "A big reward! Help us find the members of the Deception Group, and each of you can get a hundred thousand dollars."
"Hurry, there’s money to be made, let us through, and let’s go together." The head of the supervision team shouted with less and less conviction, as he didn’t receive any response.
The human wall in front of him simply regarded him with indifferent stares, unmoved by the hundred thousand dollars.
A hundred thousand Feather Coins would definitely not be a small sum in Lonely City, a windfall that could afford an ordinary person several months of splurging.
Yet, not a single person in the crowd blocking the street moved; their faces bore a hint of a mocking smile.
"Finding the chairman guarantees a hefty reward—one million... Even a hundred million is possible!" The head of the supervision team kept shouting to the crowd, but then he fell silent.
It was as if someone had deliberately incited these people; they weren’t rash, didn’t come forward to attack their vehicles, and they did not hurl any insults or abuses, only simply blocking the normal traffic.
That was all.
Strictly speaking, there was not much that could legally charge them; with so many people doing the same thing, even if the police came, it would only amount to verbal warnings and admonitions, and they couldn’t even be detained.
After all, the detention center didn’t have enough places for these people.
The head of the supervision team’s forehead was dotted with sweat drops.
What the hell was happening now?
How could they possibly drive through this human wall?
If they actually did drive through, wouldn’t he end up spending a lifetime behind bars?
And then, it suddenly occurred to him.
Right, considering the situation, the chairman was definitely going to die.
So why was he taking this so seriously?
Shouldn’t he be rushing back to Sages right now to erase his criminal records?
Thinking this, the supervision team leader suddenly understood what he should really do, so he silenced his communicator watch and said to the deputy leader sitting in the backseat, "Number Two, I need to take a trip back to the company. Tell the chairman that I got out of the car to look for him."
Even now, he still didn’t want to completely fall out with the chairman.
That way, in case the police managed to rescue the chairman first, his situation wouldn’t be too awkward.
So, he left his wristwatch behind, quickly got out of the car, and turned to head in the direction of the Sages Group.
After the head of the supervision team left, the subordinates in the back looked at each other, understanding in their eyes as they watched the direction in which their leader went.
"This, keep the wristwatch for now; I have something to do and need to go first." The deputy leader, after taking the wristwatch, tossed it to his own subordinate and then swiftly got out of the car.
