Chapter 429: Where you truly belong (3)

Shi Ningkai lifted his foot to take a step toward Mulan when Xie Zi Han blocked his way. Even the cold of the Arctic couldn’t match the frostiness in his gaze.

"Where the hell do you think you are going?" He asked in an extremely low whisper.

"Where am I going? Why do you care? This isn’t the first time I am meeting your accomplished CEO daughter. Right, Miss. Xie?"

Mulan smiled. "I don’t know what you are talking about and I know you are probably targeting me because I am your old colleague’s daughter? But it’s not going to work."

He sneered. "Wow. Some fine actress you are."

"There won’t be a head on your shoulders anymore if you don’t stop dragging my daughter into this."

"Aww, you love her so much. It’s so emotional. But do you even know what your dearest and innocent daughter has been doing behind the curtains? You accuse me of betraying the code yet you are feeding a snake in your own family who has been doing nothing but play with your trust-"

His face got knocked over to the side as a vicious punch landed on his cheek.

"Stop saying shit about my daughter or I will kill you here myself!"

"Dad!"

Mulan cried and jumped to grab his arm, dragging him back. "Forget about him! He is just trying to provoke you!"

Shi Ningkai wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and chuckled. "Oh, I hit a nerve, didn’t I? Typical fatherly instinct. You always were like that, Xie. You look for enemies everywhere except the one under your nose."

"Keep talking," Xie Zi Han growled, "and you will lose your tongue next."

"Oh, I will," he said, his voice leaking with mockery. "But first, let me ask, how much do you really know about your precious daughter’s empire? About her game?"

Why the hell is he dragging me into this!? Mulan gritted her teeth and wished she could slit his throat once and for all.

Yet she maintained her composure. "I don’t understand what you mean."

"Oh, I think you do," Shi Ningkai sneered. "Your father here thinks that his dearest daughter is so innocent but does he know that it’s you who had approached me first?"

She stiffened.

"You have been parading around as the CEO of Survival Games, inspiring young minds. Very bold and encouraging. But do you know what’s not bold? The reports of young teenagers lying in hospitals who can’t tell the difference between the real world and your virtual one, who have lost their minds because you have been sucking their sanity through your vicious game."

"That’s absurd!" Mulan snapped, though her voice shook slightly. "What the hell do you even know about my game?"

"What do I know? Your whole game was built upon my ’medical guidance.’ You wanted to develop a technology that could destroy the cognitive functions of a brain. It made them more aggressive and violent. It made them out of control. In fact, one of your game levels is based on She. The new She which I built. I got many followers thanks to your game addiction," he sneered.

"It was me who helped you build your precious testing program. The neural reward simulations, the cognitive loop triggers, those were my ideas, Miss Xie. You just marketed them like they were innocent entertainment and this engagement party here was nothing more than a farce for you to get investors lined up for your game - which by the way, you got this golden chance on your plate because of my connection with Hou Tengqi."

A sharp silence fell over the hall.

"You have completely lost your freaking mind!" Xie Zi Han grabbed his collar, but Jia stopped him this time.

"Please stop, Mr. Xie!"

"Ask this man to stop spouting nonsense first!"

Mulan forced a calm smile. "You are delusional, Dr. Shi. I don’t even know you. You are just trying to drag me down with your crimes. I have my able assistant with me, Li Beiye, who has personally worked with me on the project. She can lift any nonsense delusions you have about my game."

She turned to look at Beiye, slightly squinting her eyes at her. "Come here, Beiye."

Beiye was standing quietly in the background. Her plan was to stay in the background until her plan would be set in motion. The plan was quite straightforward where once Yong would create a scene about the Hou family’s involvement with Nuwa’s disappearance, the story would gradually unfold to expose Shi Ningkai, who was the common link between Hou family and Mulan.

The curtain would then come into Mulan, but the unexpected tide of this story came to be Shi Ningkai exposing Mulan himself. There were no signs of growing friction between them that he would choose to walk all over her and betray her. Never in her wildest imagination did she think that Shi Ningkai would so easily point fingers at her. That was like fifty percent of the work done in her favor right there. The stars were really in a bad place for Mulan.

"Beiye, you have your laptop with you, right? You can show the backend working of our game."

Shi Ningkai sneered. "Do you take me for a fool? Of course, you would have sugarcoated your code."

Beiye silently came forward and opened her laptop. She plugged in a small usb stick and booted on a folder. She navigated through some inner folders and clicked twice on a video file. The video sprang to life that showed a recording of a hospital ward.

Mulan’s eyes widened. "What is this video, Beiye? I told you to open the presentation deck."

"Is there a problem with this video, Mam?" She asked without any emotion.

Mulan stared at her, stunned. "Wrong? You are opening the wrong file! Why are you wasting time with this?"

"Wasting time...?" She dropped a gaze at the image and then looked back at her. "Looking at my comatose brother feels like a waste of time for you?"
