Chapter 439: Walk away (5)

Xie Zi Han stood before the Yang family’s gates - No. Not Xie Zi Han. He had already shed away that identity the moment the plane had landed in Beijing.

From this moment onwards until the last of his breath, he would be called Yang Cheng. That was who he was now, and that was the man stepping into the Yang family’s mansion.

His first impression of Yang Ruo Xuan as he met him was that of an authoritarian. He could see it in his eyes that he was used to ruling people like his subjects, almost in a tyrannical way. His face held the wrinkles that told the saga of his old age, but the harsh streak from his eyes hadn’t mellowed down one bit.

Yang Cheng stood before him. The only tip he had gotten from the now Xie Zi Han was to never give in to Yang Ruo Xuan. The moment he would let his control over him would be the moment he would lose all his freedom. In a way, being a rebel was the only way to keep his sanity.

"Grandpa-"

His sentence was cut-off by the loud bang of his wooden stick banging against the floor’s surface as if it threatened to unleash an earthquake.

"You have the nerve to show your face here after the abysmal time you spent in the university!? You being a doctor is a joke to the Yang family’s name! Nobody had ever done that badly in bringing home a medical degree in my house. At this point, your degree is as meaningless as your existence!"

No warm welcome. No hugs. No smiles.

That was Yang Ruo Xuan, who was utterly disappointed with his grandson. Though Yang Cheng had gotten his fair share of preparation about his grandfather, it was still a completely different thing to experience it first-hand.

Somewhere in the corner of his heart, he held a tinge of fear that he would be recognized as the imposter. No matter the differences between the grandfather and grandson, there was no way he wouldn’t recognize his own blood, right?

It turned out that he didn’t. And any last remaining kindness in Yang Cheng’s heart had also vanished the moment he raised his voice against him.

So Yang Cheng walked past him to make his way towards his room.

"Where the hell are you going?"

"My room."

"When I am talking to you?"

"When you are screaming at me."

Yang Ruo Xuan’s expression was beyond indescribable. "And whose fault is that! You had one job to do! Become the best doctor out there and carry on the Yang family’s legacy. But I know all about your tests and scores. The kind of average doctor you became, just barely out of the red zone!"

Yang Cheng held his gaze for a moment and then ignored him as he continued walking upstairs.

"Come back!" He roared the entire mansion trembling with the aftermath. "How dare you leave the conversation midway!"

"If you don’t even have the decency to welcome me after ten long years now that you have seen me again, then I don’t see any point in continuing this conversation."

Yang Ruo Xuan’s fist tightened. He knew Cheng was always a rebellious kid, but there was something very different in how he carried himself as he stood before him now.

"You..."

"I am not the same Yang Cheng whom you knew ten years ago."

Which was quite literally true in this situation.

"I will be the best doctor that I want to be. I will make sure of that. So don’t talk to me like that again."

The air felt freezing. Until now, only Yang Ruo Xuan held that kind of pressure to bring people to their knees. But now there was Yang Cheng, who wouldn’t listen to the same harsh assessments over and over again.

As he stepped into his room, Yang Cheng dropped a message. ’It went fine.’

’He didn’t feel suspicious at all?’

’No.’

’...I see. Welp, all’s well that ends well. I know by now you would have seen it upfront how he is. I am sorry for putting you through this.’

’I am fine. I don’t care about him. Are you fine?’

’Of course! I am finally free! Nobody figured out a thing and now I can finally breathe!’

Yang Cheng knew he was lying. He had felt that pause. He knew he was hurt that Yang Ruo Xuan felt nothing odd when he saw Xie Zi Han. The real Yang Cheng was already lost a long time ago.

The days kept passing by and Yang Cheng soon officially joined one of the largest hospitals in Beijing. Being Yang Ruo Xuan’s grandson, the pathway was as smooth as butter. But the journey wasn’t.

Everybody had heard of how mediocre Yang Cheng’s performance was as a resident. Just an average doctor that didn’t stand out much. His medical knowledge was barely subpar. That was the bias Yang Cheng had to face, even from his own grandfather.

"Mr. Wang is my patient. Why has his attending doctor changed?"

Yang Ruo Xuan stared at him blankly. "And let you do the surgery and let him die on your table?"

"He is not going to die."

"By your hands, he surely will. What kind of a stain will it bring to the Yang family’s name if a patient died by a Yang doctor’s hands!?"

"Has no patient ever died in our hospital or under your care?"

"Obviously-"

"Yes, they have. And they will in the future too. Our job is to give them the best chance at surviving so that they live a long, healthy life. Right now, you are throwing those chances into the dumpster by changing his attending doctor midway. The new doctor doesn’t understand his medical history like I do. You are a doctor yourself, aren’t you? How risky would that be if he missed some important detail during the surgery?"

His gaze darkened. "You want me to trust your skills?"

Yang Cheng’s gaze looked downright Arctic.

"What you see is not what is always the truth. Maybe I portrayed myself as mediocre on purpose to piss you off? So are you truly sure of my capabilities?"

"YANG CHENG!!"

"Shut up."

He froze.

Yang Cheng’s stone-faced countenance was the most terrifying of all. "I don’t care if you are my grandfather or how old you are. We are already past that bridge of being a happy family. So the least you could do is not mess up my job and I have only one job to do - Be a doctor. Don’t come in that way because the last thing I will tolerate is some bruised egos interfering with a patient’s care."
