The Devil's Betrothed-Chapter 638: Brother And Sister
Chapter 638: Brother And Sister
After talking with them for a while, Lucian stepped out of the house. He saw Rina stirring the soup boiling on the clay stove in the front yard while cutting vegetables on the side.
He approached her. "Give it to me. I’ll help you cut the vegetables."
"I can do it," she replied politely. "It will be ready soon, and I’ll serve it to you."
He noticed the change in her behavior—unusually polite.
She put the knife aside and proceeded to lift the lid from the soup pot, but Lucian held her hand. "It’s hot," he said, grabbing the cloth from the side and lifting the lid for her.
She checked the soup. "It’s ready. Do you want to eat some?"
"I will eat together with you all."
She didn’t insist and continued her work.
"Do you want to talk to me about something?" he asked.
"I’m not sure," she replied.
"I know you heard everything while standing outside the room," he commented.
Her hand, busy cutting the vegetables, paused.
"I want to know what you’re thinking," he said again.
Putting the knife aside, she looked at him, her eyes moist. "Can I really continue to call you my brother?"
"I am your brother and will always be one. That will never change," he assured her.
"I... I thought... I no longer had a brother," tears rolled down her cheeks. "I felt as if I lost something really important."
Lucian wiped her tears away and caressed her head. "We are a family. You are my little sister, and I will always take care of you as your elder brother."
She hugged him. She barely reached his chest as she wrapped her arms around him. "And you are my brother. I don’t want anything to change."
He hugged her back, a light smile painting his lips. All he wanted was to have his family with him. Without them, he couldn’t imagine living this life. They were his everything.
After a while, when she was calm, she looked at him. "But are you really the same brother I used to have?"
He raised an eyebrow. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
"The number of words you’ve spoken since you arrived—I think I hadn’t heard that many during all these years by your side. You’re not mute at all."
Lucian tapped her head lightly at what she said.
"Ouch... that hurts." She rubbed her head. "Now I know you’re truly the same one."
He smiled lightly, wondering if he really hadn’t talked much before. Mute? The word reminded him of someone who often called him that. Her words rang in his ears: ’I like it when you’re mute.’
They all shared a meal together, enjoying family time with Ken and his wife. Later, Lucian, Gwen, and Paul explained Lucian’s true identity to Ken and his wife, leaving them in shock.
"You are a lord? A lord of the northeast?" Ken asked in disbelief.
Lucian nodded. "The eastern part of it."
"All along, we were with a lord and didn’t know," Ken repeated, stunned. "If we have offended you in any way, please forgive us."
"You have always been a great help, Ken, and I would never forget it," Lucian said sincerely and looked at his mother, urging her to proceed.
"How about you and your wife come with us to the northeast, Ken? There, we can all live as a family," Gwen asked.
Ken and his wife were taken aback. "F-Family?" Ken stammered.
"You are the only relatives we have, and we would like it if you came with us," Paul added.
Ken looked at Lucian to which he offered him a nod.
"Ken, instead of struggling here in the capital, you can work with Luke. He needs loyal people, and you can be one of them,"Paul suggested.
Ken turned to his wife. "Would you like to go there?"
"If you want to, then I have no issue," she replied.
Ken looked at Lucian. "Thank you for considering us family, despite us being nothing but commoners, Lord Rainier."
"Call me by my name. Luke or Lucian, whichever you feel is right," Lucian said.
After everything was settled, Rina asked, "Brother, will you take me to see the city? I want to see the capital."
"I will," Lucian promised.
"Umm... How about the palace? At least from the outside?"
"We will go inside the palace," Lucian replied, then looked at his parents. "His Majesty wishes to meet you for all you did for me."
They were all surprised that the King wanted to meet them. "Will it be alright?" Gwen asked.
"You are my family, so it’s the right thing. Soon, I will take you to the palace," Lucian informed them.
"Then I will need a nice dress," Rina said in a hurry, "and Mother will too."
"We will do that," Lucian replied.
Rina looked at Gwen. "Mother, I like this talkative brother of mine instead of the mute one."
"Rina," Gwen began to scold her, but Lucian interrupted, "It’s alright, Mother," and turned to Rina. "Get ready. We will go to the market today."
"I am ready already."
Lucian stood up and walked towards the door.
Rina followed him like a little lamb behind her master, while the others could hear their voices. "Brother, you are a lord, which means you have lots of gold and silver."
"I do."
"How much?"
"Enough to buy the entire city market for you."
"Does that mean I can buy a lot of things?"
"You can."
"So, I want a dress... wait, not one but at least a few more. Then nice sandals, a hairpin..."
Her voice continued to fade away as the brother and sister left.
"This girl," Gwen frowned.
Ken laughed a little. "Let her be, Aunt Gwen. Luke won’t mind it. In fact, he would be glad to fulfill all her demands."
"I am worried she’ll end up spoiled by her brother."
"You worry too much," Paul said. "Luke knows how to handle her. Leave her to him. He has always been a good brother to her."
Gwen could only agree.
