Chapter 276: Why can’t I see my father?

Fil and Jackson stared at each other while the silence between them grew deeper.

"That crown princess, her name is Fil..."

Jackson trailed off when the sound of her phone interrupted the thick tension in the air. Fil jolted by the sound of it, quickly taking her phone to volume it down.

She didn’t plan to answer it, but when she saw the name on the screen, she hesitated.

Jackson glanced at the screen and furrowed his brows. "Assistant Raul?" he read, not remembering a name like that around her.

Was it a client’s assistant?

Jackson shifted his gaze to her face and quickly realized his guess was incorrect. "Who is it?"

"He... he is Chairman Hale’s secretary," Fil looked up at him with worry in her eyes.

"Go answer it," he said, offering her a short smile. "What I’m saying can wait."

Fil wanted to hear what he was about to say. She didn’t hear the crown princess’s name because of the loud ring.

On the other hand, she was worried about Chairman Hale. The last time she heard, he was in the hospital and his health was declining. She had always wanted to visit him, but with her relationship with Vincent, she simply couldn’t decide on that.

So, Fil ended up answering the call as her worries prevailed. Raul wouldn’t call him out of nowhere if it wasn’t important.

Fil quietly listened to the voice, and her eyes slowly dilated.

Jackson narrowed his eyes as he observed, watching Fil look at him with horror.

"Okay," Fil muttered with great difficulty. "I will... I will go. I’m in the country, anyway."

Having said that, she hung up.

Jackson quickly looked at her with questioning eyes.

"Assistant Raul said... the chairman might not gonna make it tonight," she explained in a shaky voice, shocked at this news she received. "And he’s asking if I could come so he could see me for the last time."

Felix had always been very kind to her; he treated her as his own granddaughter. He also helped their family a lot in the past, especially when her parents were struggling. Hence, Fil didn’t have the heart to refuse the old man’s request even if she might see Vincent and his family.

Jackson reached for her hand and smiled comfortingly. "I’ll drive you there. Tell me the address."

In the hospital, Fil quickly jumped out of the car and went to the floor where Felix Hale was. Jackson, on the other hand, told her he would wait for her.

When Fil reached the corridor of the private ward, she saw Rosalind and Vincent throwing a huge fit outside.

"Why can’t I see my father?!" Rosalind roared. "I am Felix Hale’s only daughter! How dare you block my way and stop me from seeing my father?!"

"What is Raul’s thinking?!" Vincent also shouted in frustration. "He couldn’t do this to us! He’s depriving us of the right to be with our grandfather!"

"Get out of the way! Out!" Rosalind aggressively punched the bodyguard blocking the door and Vincent also jumped in.

However, the bodyguards were huge and muscular men. They didn’t bulge when Rosalind tried to force her way in, and they simply tossed Vincent to the side.

"Are you crazy!?" this time, Valerie yelled when Vincent fell on the floor. She rushed to his side and looked at the heartless bodyguards angrily. "Didn’t you hear we are the chairman’s family?! How can you not let us in?!"

"What is wrong with all of you?!" this time, Vincent’s father, who obviously rushed here from the office, howled. "Don’t you hear us?!"

One of the bodyguards coldly glanced at the four and heartlessly said, "It’s the chairman’s orders. Please. You’re making a ruckus and the chairman wouldn’t be able to rest if you continue being loud."

SLAP!

Rosalind fumed, and before she knew it, she struck the bodyguard’s face. The bodyguard maintained his composure even though his face was tossed to the side.

"How dare you all..." her voice shook in anger to the point her eyes turned red. "If something happened to my father and I am not with him, I’m going to press charges against all of you!"

"Don’t you know who we are!?" Rosalind’s husband added. "I’m going to make sure you’ll all be unemployed for doing this to our family!"

"No." Vincent already got up and hissed, remembering the bodyguards’ faces. "I’ll call somebody now. Just you wait!"

Vincent quickly searched for his phone, knowing he should press charges now to get rid of these bodyguards. This didn’t make sense to the whole family. Although the chairman voiced out he didn’t like any visitation, he allowed Vincent to visit him from time to time. Raul never said a word.

But now that the chairman was dying, they were blocking everyone from entering?!

At the back of Vincent’s mind, he knew something was going on. Knowing his grandfather’s deepest secret, Vincent couldn’t help himself but imagine how Felix Hale would screw him up for one last time.

But just when Vincent found his phone, he heard Valerie speak.

"Fil?" Valerie gazed at Fil, who was standing on the side, with confusion. "What are you doing here?" free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Fil?" Vincent quickly turned his head and his eyes dilated the moment he laid his eyes on her. For a moment, his mind went blank, unsure if he was shocked to see her again after a long time or dread of why she was there.

Rosalind scoffed, brushing the strands of hair away from her face. "What is this little wench doing here?"

"Fil, this is not a good time for our family," her husband spoke calmly but firmly. "Whatever you want to talk about with Vincent, talk about it later."

Fil looked at the family and couldn’t help but think what happened to them? Back then, they all looked so glamorous and regal. But now, they simply looked haggard, as if their shine and glamour disappeared.

Fil approached them but didn’t bother talking to them. She cast the bodyguard a look and said, "The chairman wants to see me?"

The bodyguard studied her face for a second before they stepped to the side, giving way to her. Fil didn’t bother looking back and went in.

If not seeing them was the chairman’s last wish, then they should just respect that, she thought.

The family of four watched the bodyguard give way to her, dumbfounded.
