"Come, come, children, gather 'round," Liu Banxia waved to the interns.

They had just started their shift and there were no patients yet, so the interns quickly gathered.

"I have some good news and some even better news. Which one do you want to hear first?" Liu Banxia asked.

"Oh my god, Teacher Liu, can you please spare us?" Xu Yino immediately bristled.

Based on their understanding of Liu Banxia, his so-called "good news" often signaled the beginning of an ordeal. When he had announced their rotations in pediatrics and the ICU, he had also called it "good news."

"Ah... this afternoon we've been assigned a hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery. It's not clear yet whether it has metastasized or not. What a pity," Liu Banxia said with a smile.

The interns gritted their teeth, knowing that Demon King Liu was dangling the surgery in front of them again.

"Teacher Liu, you're ruthless. Is this the good news? Shall we draw lots or bid for it?" Xu Yino gave in.

"Bidding would be too unfair; let's draw lots. However, there is a certain order of priority. Those planning to master hepatobiliary surgery first will indeed have precedence," Liu Banxia said.

"As for whether this is good news... I haven't performed such a complex surgery in a long time. If it has metastasized, the procedure could be even more complicated."

"Let me be clear, I haven't reviewed the examination reports yet; I only heard about it briefly from the director. He probably thinks I've had too much free time lately. You'll decide amongst yourselves who will assist in the surgery—two spots, mind you."

"So, tell me, is this good news? Consider it a little gift from me before you receive your graduation certificates and sign your contracts with this hospital. Does it count or not?"

All six nodded; this definitely counted.

Such a major surgery was a rare opportunity. Even if they occasionally got to observe Zhou Shuwen perform one or two, it was infrequent. In reality, the queue of people wanting to observe was too long, and most of the time, they could only watch from afar.

"Alright, now let me share another piece of incredibly exciting news," Liu Banxia announced gleefully.

"As a disciple of the director, I feel it's my duty to help lighten his surgical load. It's my responsibility as his student. So, I intend to volunteer and request more surgeries from him."

"I'm basically guaranteeing one Level 3 or Level 4 surgery every day to ease the director's burden. And then, you will get to choose these surgeries and assist in them. Each of you gets to pick one, and we'll do this for six consecutive days. How wonderful is that?" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

The interns were dumbfounded. This was indeed wonderful. Being able to choose their own cases meant they could address their individual weaknesses. If they felt deficient in a particular type of surgery, they could specifically choose cases to improve in that area.

"Of course, that alone wouldn't be much fun. There are quite a few patients seeking treatment now, so we can't let these six days go to waste. We'll also add one or two minor surgeries to the schedule each day," Liu Banxia continued.

"Familiar formula, familiar taste, right? You guessed it. This is the grand onboarding gift I'm giving you—enjoy the surgery marathon!"

The interns wanted to cry—not from gratitude, but from sheer stress.

A surgery marathon! What kind of life experience was that? One such ordeal had already left an indelible mark on them; why did they have to go through it again?

Demon King Liu truly lived up to his name; he was a masochist who dragged others into his self-inflicted torment, yet he could describe it all so refreshingly.

"Shouldn't there be some applause right about now?" Liu Banxia spoke up again.

"Teacher Liu, you're really something," Huang Bo said, giving a thumbs-up.

The other five, including Su Wenhao, also raised their thumbs.

Only Liu Banxia could pull off something this crazy.

If it were just Level 1 or Level 2 minor surgeries—appendectomies, cholecystectomies, hernia repairs, and the like—a marathon of those might still be manageable.

But what had he just said? He was guaranteeing a Level 3 or Level 4 surgery every day. That kind of surgery could easily turn into a five or six-hour procedure.

If they then had to perform one or two minor surgeries on top of that, they would essentially be spending their entire day in the operating room.

"Moved? Aren't you moved?" Liu Banxia asked, still smiling.

"Moved, so moved. Have you told the director yet?" Xu Yino asked.

"I'm about to tell him now."

Liu Banxia tossed out the remark and headed towards Zhou Shuwen's office.

The remaining six exchanged glances, all managing only bitter smiles.

Having such a crazy mentor was truly a "blessing" of unknown proportions. When he went off the rails, it was boundless and utterly without warning.

When Liu Banxia had arrived earlier today, Liu Yiqing and Xu Yino were the first to see him. They had even been discussing looking for a puppy and had already planned their days off.

And then what happened? Demon King Liu had a sudden whim and decided to bestow upon them a "luxurious onboarding gift package" of intense work. Who could possibly endure that?

「In about five minutes」

Liu Banxia walked out of Zhou Shuwen's office, beaming.

The interns had been secretly hoping the director wouldn't let Demon King Liu go completely wild. But seeing the smile on Liu Banxia's face, they knew there was no point in hoping for anything else.

"Alright, you guys first figure out who will assist me this afternoon—two or three of you. Don't let it disrupt your work in the Emergency Center. Then, go review the director's patients and pick the surgeries you're interested in," Liu Banxia said.

"As for the related minor surgeries, we can schedule those when you're not assisting in major ones. I still need to find Old Wang to book an operating room."

This should have been exciting news, but the interns couldn't bring themselves to feel happy. They knew the next six days would undoubtedly be more exhausting than their rotations in the ICU and pediatrics.

"Good heavens, man, are you trying to work them to death? Can you even handle it yourself?" Shi Lei asked, drifting over after finishing with a patient.

"I have to endure it, even if I feel I can't. Just think, as soon as I mentioned it to the director, he agreed. He must be really worn out from all the hard work lately," Liu Banxia said.

"Seriously, you should pitch in too and help lessen the director's load. The scheduled surgeries still need to be done. At worst, when the Anesthesiology Department is a bit less swamped, we can treat them to a meal."

"You think I haven't been? I've already taken on three patients from the director," Shi Lei said with a wry smile.

"But I still don't dare to take on the major surgeries by myself; I'm just not confident enough. Routine procedures are fine, but I'm afraid I can't handle the complex ones alone."

"Surely not? Man, you need to have more confidence in yourself. I'm not just saying this to flatter you. I've seen your surgeries; you're the one who trained me. Your meticulousness in surgery is definitely not an issue," Liu Banxia said seriously.

"The director's surgical backlog has built up again because many complex cases are specifically seeking him out due to his reputation. Plus, other matters take up his time. I think, whether it's you and me, or Brother Wei, we all need to elevate our skills further."

"As for the interns, my impression is that Xu Yino, Liu Yiqing, and Su Wenhao have a more thorough understanding of hepatobiliary surgery. You can lean towards them when choosing your first assistant in the future."

"The other three have some strengths in gastrointestinal surgery, but their overall skill levels are similar. Actually, they're all very capable."

Shi Lei nodded. "Their fundamental skills have indeed been honed very well. I'll think it over. Sigh... being around you, the pressure is immense."

"After this busy period is over, no matter what, you have to treat us to a good meal. We don't even need to go to Jinbao; the hospital cafeteria will be fine. You should go find Old Wang now; he's not scheduled for surgery this morning."

"You guys are always picking on me! Aren't I practically family after that introduction I made? How come *I'm* not getting treated to a meal?" Liu Banxia grumbled, then trotted off towards the Anesthesiology Department.

It wasn't as simple as just deciding to do a surgery. These were unscheduled procedures, which meant they had to be factored into the Anesthesiology Department's existing plans, effectively adding to their workload.

If he couldn't get Comrade Old Wang on board, this whole endeavor wouldn't go smoothly.

In fact, he had his own little scheme: to perform as many surgeries as possible during this period before his term as chief resident ended. Once he officially stepped down, he wouldn't have to be so busy.

"Are you insane? If you want to be insane, do it on your own! Why drag us all down with you?" Wang Lei was almost in tears after Liu Banxia explained the situation.

"Hey, when I was reporting to the director earlier, I also casually inquired. It seems they've recruited two new anesthesiologists, and they'll be prioritized for our Emergency Center," Liu Banxia said.

"And as for me doing all these surgeries, it's not for myself at all! It's absolutely for our director. Haven't you noticed? Since becoming the Vice President, he's clearly much more fatigued."

"What can be done? The director is frequently in surgery, plus he has meetings to attend and paperwork to handle. Let's put it this way: when he's not in the operating room, he's working. He hardly has any free time," Wang Lei said.

Even though Liu Banxia was Zhou Shuwen's disciple, he didn't necessarily understand these matters as well as Wang Lei did. Surgeries could last a very long time, and it was the anesthesiologists like them who were there throughout, occasionally chatting to lighten the atmosphere.

"That's precisely why! So I want to take on more. Boss Wang, please try your best to schedule them for me. I already have surgeries scheduled every week anyway; I'm just adding a little bit more," Liu Banxia said.

"It's like spreading out what would normally be concentrated into two days over the rest of the week. Hey, that hilar cholangiocarcinoma surgery this afternoon—are you the anesthesiologist for it? The director assigned it to me as well."

"Go, go, go! Just looking at you makes me mad. Submit the surgery requests, and I'll see about scheduling them. And you're treating us to a meal when this is over! We're busy enough as it is without you adding to our troubles," Wang Lei said helplessly.

When it came to Liu Banxia, Wang Lei felt resigned; there was no use complaining. That guy could be incredibly persistent sometimes.

Still, being in surgery with Liu Banxia had its perks. At the very least, his hands were fast, which saved some time—time that could be used for a quick breather.

However, Wang Lei still couldn't quite figure out why Liu Banxia had gone into overdrive again. Relieving some of Zhou Shuwen's pressure was one thing, but perhaps it was also due to the stress from the ongoing competition for the deputy director position.
