Chapter 272: End of the Arc

"I saw him in the arena," Thorgar grumbled, limping forward to stand beside Michael. "I saw him face the Void. He does not gamble, Deiman. If he says the Dew exists, then by the Anvil, I believe it exists."

Thorgar looked at Michael.

"You saved my daughter," Thorgar said. "You saved my Kingdom’s future. If you say you can save them... then go."

Deiman looked at the Dwarf King, then at his daughter’s pale face. He clenched his jaw until a tooth cracked.

"Thirty days," Deiman whispered. "You have thirty days, Wilson. If she dies... I will hunt you down."

"If she dies," Michael adjusted his glasses, "I’ll let you."

The decision was made. The atmosphere in the car shifted from despair to a frantic, military precision.

"We need a team," Michael announced, pulling up a holographic map of the continent. "The train can take us to the Eastern Junction. From there, we enter the Great Forest."

"I’m going," Leon said immediately. He stood up, wiping his face. The tears were gone. In their place was a burning resolve. "I failed to protect her. I won’t fail to save her."

"I’m coming too," a voice piped up from the back.

Lyra Braveheart, the red-headed brawler from the Beastbound Academy who had been rescued from the stadium, stepped forward. She cracked her knuckles. "Someone needs to keep you idiots from burning down the forest. Besides, I owe you for the train ride."

"Count me in," Aiden Stromfang said, leaning against the doorframe. He was bandaged heavily, but he smirked. "I lost my match. I need to regain my honor. And... Michael was right. I need to hunt my own prey."

"Where the Chief goes, I go," Alex Vonstel grunted, raising his dented tower shield.

Michael looked at them. A Hero, a Brawler, an Assassin, and a Tank. And him, the Monarch.

"Good," Michael nodded. "But we travel light. No Patriarchs. No Royals."

He turned to the adults.

"The Demon Cult will be watching the Royals," Michael explained. "If King Elandor or Lord Frostheart enters the forest, it’s an act of war. If a group of students does it... it’s a field trip."

"A field trip to commit sacrilege," Queen Lirien noted, though she reached into her robe and pulled out a silver pendant. She handed it to Leon. "This is the Key of the White Wood. It will let you pass the outer barrier. Save her, Lionheart. Bring my daughter home."

"I swear it," Leon bowed.

King Thorgar grunted. "The Iron-Horse will drop the Royal Delegation at the Ironhold Outpost. Then, the train is yours. Durak has overridden the controls."

Grandmaster Durak nodded from the cockpit. "I’ve locked the destination to the Eastern Border. She’s got enough mana-fuel to get you there, but the tracks are old."

"We’ll manage," Michael said.

The Departure

An hour later, the train slowed at a subterranean junction. The blast doors opened, revealing a squad of Dwarven elite guards and medical teams waiting to escort the VIPs.

Queen Helmina hugged Princess Freya. "Be safe, my daughter. Lead the council well."

"I will, Mother," Freya said, her eyes drifting to Michael. She walked up to him.

"You are leaving," Freya stated.

"I have work to do," Michael replied.

Freya hesitated, then unclasped the crystal circlet from her brow—the symbol of the Crown Princess. She pressed it into Michael’s hand.

"A loan," Freya said, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It contains a high-tier ice shield. Return it when you come back. Or I will add it to your debt."

Michael looked at the artifact, then pocketed it. "Understood."

As the Royals disembarked, Scark Stromfang stopped by Aiden. He didn’t hug his son. He simply punched him in the shoulder, hard enough to bruise.

"Don’t die, pup," Scark growled. "Come back a wolf."

Aiden grinned, wincing. "Yes, Father."

The doors hissed shut. The train was empty now, save for the small party of students and the two stasis pods.

The Turn

Michael walked into the conductor’s cabin. The controls were massive levers of brass and iron.

He looked at the nav-computer. The flashing light indicated [Destination: Arcadia Academy - South].

Michael grabbed the main lever.

"Michael?" Leon asked, standing in the doorway. "Are we ready?"

"Phase Five," Michael murmured.

He pulled the lever.

CLUNK.

The tracks beneath the train shifted with a groan of heavy metal. The Iron-Horse shuddered as it switched lines.

[Destination Updated: The Eastern Wilds - Elven Border]

The engine roared. The train surged forward, picking up speed, heading away from safety, away from the school, and toward the unknown.

Michael climbed the maintenance ladder to the roof of the train.

The wind was howling, whipping his black coat around him. The tunnel lights flashed by like streaks of lightning.

Nox, the Wyrmling, materialized on his shoulder, his purple eyes glowing in the dark.

Master, Nox hissed in his mind. The scent of the forest... it is full of ancient mana.

"And ancient monsters," Michael said.

He stood up, balancing perfectly on the moving train. He looked toward the East.

The Tournament was over. He had revealed his power. He was now a target for the Demon Cult, the envy of the Academies, and a rogue element to the Kingdoms.

He adjusted his cracked glasses.

"Let them come," Michael whispered to the wind. "Let them try to stop me."

The Iron-Horse screamed into the darkness, carrying the Monarch and his army toward their next war.
