Chapter 40: Pillar of Silver

Cael and Luke began fighting the vampires while trying to avoid the civilians.

The narrow street was chaotic. Civilians wandered around with empty eyes while the remaining vampires moved between them like predators.

Of course, Cael didn’t use his flashy skills since Luke was here.

Well, Luke was stronger and faster than him.

So, Cael took the defensive role while Luke took the offensive.

Then suddenly, at a distance, a huge amount of mana was discharged.

The air trembled for a brief moment.

Cael and Luke simultaneously looked in that direction.

They saw what seemed like red-colored petals drifting into the sky.

And soon it disappeared.

Luke said as he dodged a vampire attack,

"That’s where Kira is."

After saying those words, he slashed at the vampire’s neck, killing it.

"Oh!"

Cael raised an eyebrow as he pushed several civilians away using wind.

"By the way... why aren’t you using any elements?"

Luke shrugged his shoulders,

"They didn’t make me."

Cael was waiting for Luke to use his Light Element or Dark Element so that he could copy them.

But alas, Luke had only been using pure swordsmanship and showing off his [Gold 1] physical prowess.

But something felt off.

"How are you able to coat yourself using mana, though?"

Cael asked while keeping an eye on the wandering civilians.

’Mana control? No, as far as I know, Luke didn’t have this type of skill.’

’In the novel, only people who entered [Origin] could use mana control.’

Even Cael’s new SS skill couldn’t control mana. His skill could only manifest and nullify mana.

That said, mana control was limited to control. It wasn’t a mighty skill but rather a signature that identified [Origin] rankers.

Luke answered as he raised his eyebrow,

"Oh! You can sense mana? That’s surprising. Well, once a person reaches [Gold], they can enhance themselves with mana."

Yes, low-stage rankers couldn’t sense mana.

Only mid-stage rankers could sense and internally use mana, like enhancing their body and weapons.

That said, they couldn’t use mana beyond the body like mages.

Only [Origin] rankers were able to do that.

Hearing Luke’s explanation, Cael inwardly cursed himself.

’Right! How did I forget that?’

’No... no. I didn’t forget that. It’s because of Luke.’

’Since he was the protagonist, I thought he somehow got new skills.’

’Yes, that’s it. I totally didn’t forget it.’

-BOOM -BOOM

Suddenly, the ground started to shake violently.

The buildings trembled, and loose dust fell from the cracked rooftops.

Then a pillar of silver light rose into the sky like a spear piercing the clouds.

And one by one, the civilians started to fall to the ground, unconscious.

Luke immediately shouted,

"You stay here. I will go."

Without waiting for any response from Cael, Luke immediately ran toward the pillar of silver.

"Wait—"

Cael wanted to stop Luke, but the last two remaining vampires attacked him.

Having no choice, Cael blocked the claw-like hand of the vampire with his sword.

-CLANG

Even though the sword met with flesh, Cael’s hand recoiled slightly from the impact. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Cael looked at the two vampires and said,

"You know that’s your perfect chance to run away."

The vampires smiled.

"Everything is for God. We are born to serve God. We—"

Cael stopped them mid-sentence.

"Then die for that stupid god of yours."

Cael didn’t hesitate.

Black lightning flickered beneath his feet as he emerged from the vampire’s shadow and slashed at the vampire’s neck.

-Thud

One vampire dropped dead.

Only one remained.

Cael’s eyes flashed as he looked at the vampire who placed his hand on a civilian’s neck.

"Hehe... If you move even a single step, I will kill this person immediately."

Cael paused.

"Yes... Don’t move even a single muscle."

Cael shook his head and smiled.

"You are a bit late... Mira."

As soon as Cael said those words, a sky-blue-haired girl with golden eyes started walking toward them.

-Step -Step

Her footsteps echoed softly across the quiet street.

"Sorry... Something came up."

Cael nodded his head and asked,

"Where are Edwin and Aria?"

Mira sighed and said,

"I told them to leave and asked them to call the council branch."

They completely ignored the fact that the vampire was holding a hostage.

Thick veins appeared on the vampire’s forehead as he shouted,

"Both of you... don’t move or else I will kill this person."

Mira curiously looked at the vampire and asked,

"Why would you do that?"

The vampire opened his mouth to say something, but nothing immediately came out.

After a few seconds, he said,

"I don’t want you guys to disrupt our god’s plan."

Mira’s eyes widened.

"God?"

Cael shook his head.

"Not really. I think he was just a vampire."

Mira glanced at Cael and then back to the vampire, more specifically at his claw-like fingers.

"You are a vampire?"

Mira’s eyes sparkled.

This was her first time seeing a vampire.

Then she pointed at the vampire and asked,

"Should we kill him?"

Cael nodded his head.

"Obviously."

They totally disregarded the fact that the vampire had a person as a hostage.

The vampire finally lost it.

He wanted to kill this person and take another hostage.

That way, Mira and Cael would listen to him.

Thinking that, the vampire instantly moved his hand toward the hostage’s heart.

Just as his hand reached the hostage’s heart, something incredible happened.

A water ripple appeared in the air like a mirror as the vampire’s hand moved into it.

Another mirror opened behind the vampire.

From that mirror, the vampire’s hand emerged and pierced into his own heart.

The vampire felt a sharp pain in his chest as he looked down.

Only to see that his own arm had pierced his heart.

Then he looked at the two mirrors.

With unwilling eyes, the vampire died.

Cael wanted to copy Mira’s skill but failed.

Then he turned and looked at the pillar of silver light and said,

"Let’s go. Luke is already heading toward that pillar."

Mira nodded as she sighed.

"That reckless fellow. You should leave as well."

Cael shook his head, saying he would come.

’There is no way I miss the chance to copy high-level skills.’
