Chapter 349: Poison

’Want to get dinner first before going up?’’ Ethan asked, indirectly trying to know if she would prefer to stay in the car for a few minutes more or would like to go straight to her room—the private room.

Shikera shook her head, ’’No, let’s just go. You...you can cook for me, right?’’

Ethan’s brows arched, but he didn’t ask any questions.

’’If you want me to,’’ he replied.

’’Actually...’’ she craned her neck to look up at him, ’’Why don’t I cook? You’ve never tasted my meal...’’ she hesitated, sighing softly before adding, ’’You remember, right? The night you found out I am pregnant. You were so angry that I wouldn’t have been surprised if you had upturned the table of food.’’

’’There’s no way I’m forgetting that. I made a mistake that night, actually two, that I’ll never forget. One of which I’ll regret and the other, I won’t,’’ Ethan stated. His fingers were now playing with the loose tendrils of her hair, relishing the feel of the soft texture against his palm. He continued, ’’And to your earlier proposition, I’ll have to refuse. None of us are in the state to eat food that’s cooked by you. I’ll instruct someone to set up the kitchen so I can get to work.’’

Shikera’s face fell in disappointment, and a pang of sadness hit her gut. She had expected him to...at least, want to eat something she cooked, after how bad the night ended between them the last time she had done something like that. Even as he pushed the door open, stepped down, and walked around to get the door for her, she was still trying to mask the clear feelings on her face.

’’Are you alright?’’

She gave a slight nod in reply to his question while avoiding his eyes, an action that didn’t miss Ethan’s eyes.

’’No, you aren’t,’’ Ethan replied himself, ’’Are you feeling pain anywhere? Can you walk?’’ 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Shikera slammed the door behind herself, sending a small nod of acknowledgement to the driver, before giving her answer.

’’I’m fine. No pain anywhere...at least not physically,’’ she said, her voice lowering into a whisper when she added the last few words. ’’Can you tell me though? The mistakes you made that day.’’

’’No,’’ Ethan deadpanned, ’’They are for me to learn from, not you.’’

They walked down the garage, not blinking twice when every corner they turned in suddenly lit up with a bright light from overhead lamps. The security team must have been alerted of their arrival.

’’Can you at least tell me what you do not regret?’’ Without so much as a short pause in between her words, she threatened, ’’If you don’t want to tell me, then you can very well turn back now and return home. No one needs a fiance that keeps secrets.’’

’’But I need the fiancee who keeps prying. I can’t live without her.’’

Shikera rolled her eyes, trying to rein in the excitement she felt at those words. When she spoke, her voice was filled with sarcasm, ’’Who cares about that? Tell me or you turn now and get on your way home.’’

They got into the elevator, and Ethan was silent for a few seconds more before deciding to talk.

’’I made the mistake of eating something that was almost thrown into the trash basket, without knowing it was just poison with an attractive outlook.’’

’’Poison?!’’ Shikera echoed, ’’Did you go to the hospital afterwards? Why the heck would you eat something that was almost thrown in the trash? And that night... was it from the villa?" she asked. "I don’t remember you going out.’’

’’Because I didn’t. I consumed the poisoned food in the villa,’’ Ethan confirmed, a mischievous glint in his eyes. ’’But I don’t regret it. Now, I know not to eat anything from the woman who cooked that food.’’

’’What...No, Ethan! You’re calling the food I made poison?! It was... You stopped Hazel from throwing it in the trash and decided to eat it instead?’’ As she asked question after question, Shikera had no idea what to feel. Happy that he had eaten what she cooked that night even though he had been extremely angry with her, or unhappy that he called it poison?

Ethan shrugged, ’’Too much salt, I don’t mind the spiciness...though it’s a little bit much too...’’

Shikera’s frown deepened as he listed off the faults that her meal had. He sure had the mind to think she wouldn’t ignore him for the rest of the day for what he just did. However, her thoughts process came to a screeching halt when she heard his next words,

’’Even with those excesses that could pass as faults, it was the most delicious meal I’d ever had so I made sure to eat every single strand of pasta on the plate,’’ he stated, his tone as serious as it could ever get.

Shikera’s heart softened, but the frown remained on her face.

’’If it really is the most delicious meal you ever had, why call it poison?’’

’’Wheat. I’m allergic to that,’’ Ethan simply replied like he was telling someone what color the sky was.

Shikera could only stare at him, dumbstruck, as he continued, ’’I had Kyle come over as soon as I started, so he was able to treat me immediately. The only downside was... I was uncomfortable for the next few days, and had to drink sometimes so I could have a way to push it all out when I got drunk. All in all, I ate poison but I survived.’’

The elevator opened as soon as he stopped speaking and as if she couldn’t manage a second more in the enclosed space, Shikera stormed out of it.

"Hey..." Ethan started to call.

"Don’t come after me," she yelled back, as she turned the corner and continued down the hall. "I don’t need a fiance who doesn’t care about his own health, but gets all serious when we talk about—"

Silence.

"Shikera?" Ethan’s steps quickened, his heart thudding in his chest.
