Chapter 415: Mere Wood

Lauren made a mental note to take Steffan for both spiritual and bodily cleansing when she gets back. Who knows what this demon had done to him when he was still unconscious?

Dolly shook her head, her voice rising with desperation. "No, you’re wrong! We are married and he loves me. And you know what? He has also grown to depend on me...he needs me so badly that he can’t spend a day without me. So you see, he’ll come for me."

Lauren also shook her head but hers was that of pity for the delusional woman before her. It was quite unfortunate that Dolly had fallen beyond redemption.

How can someone hold tenaciously to a lie to the extent that she had forced herself to believe it.

"I can clearly see how delusional you are, Dolly. There was never any marriage and you know it."

Dolly let out a sarcastic laugh. "You can choose to believe it or not, but that doesn’t change the fact that we’ve been living together for the past two months and you know what that entails."

Lauren’s eyes narrowed slightly, her amusement fading as a flash of anger crossed her face.

"Stop deceiving yourself. Nothing happened between you two! I’m over a hundred percent sure that ’My’ Steffan can never condescend so low as to have anything to do with a depraved soul like you even though you might have manipulated him and kept him away. And you know why? Because he doesn’t have an ounce of affection for you. To him, you are mere wood! And even his dead body will never respond to you."

Dolly felt the floor falling out from beneath her. Lauren’s words were a punch to the gut that was delivered mercilessly that she couldn’t bear the harshness of it, because ...

they were the truth... nothing but the absolute truth.

She was made to suddenly realize this in the cruelest of ways.

Now that she thought of it. Even with his memory loss, Steffan never for once looked at her the way a man would look at a woman... despite all her efforts. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

She was practically walking naked in that house, yet he never lusted after her... not for once did she see a slight flush on his face when he looked at her.. it was always that deadpan expression all day long and all night.

But she wasn’t going to give Lauren the satisfaction that she had hit the nail on the head, so she held onto the only effective point she had to cut Lauren to size, even though it was a lie.

"That is what you want to believe, but all that doesn’t matter anymore because Steffan is now married to me and there’s no way he’d turn his back on me after everything we’ve been through."

Lauren raised an eyebrow, her expression almost amused. "Oh, is that what you think? That he believes the lies you cooked up?"

Her smile widened, but she kept her tone casual, she was careful enough to avoid giving too much away. "Interesting. It must be nice, holding onto a false hope like that."

Dolly’s heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let Lauren see her fear. "Shut up! I’m not holding onto any false hope! What we have is real!"

"Oh, really? But look at where you are. Behind bars, while Steffan... well, forget it."

Dolly wanted to glare but somehow couldn’t control the frantic blinking of her eyes.

There was something about the way Lauren spoke. It was as if she knew more than she was letting on.

But Dolly couldn’t allow herself to believe that Steffan had returned to his family. Not after everything she told him about his uncle and the fact that his life was in danger if he returned to that family.

"Where... where is he?"

Lauren’s smile returned, but it was colder now and more calculative. "Wouldn’t you like to know?" she said, stepping back from the cell. "Enjoy your stay, Dolly. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of time now tgat you’re here to think about these little things,"

With that, Lauren turned on her heel, leaving Dolly to stare after her.

The smug smile on Lauren’s face just now only deepened Dolly’s sense of doom.

Has Steffan truly gone back to his family? No! This can’t be. She couldn’t have worked and plotted tirelessly for nothing. And to make matters worse, she couldn’t even get Steffan to sleep with her, not even for once in the two months they were together. It would be a total loss if everything ended like this.

"I need to make a call," she said to the guard who had brought her.

"I have to remind you, that you are entitled to just one phone call, so use it wisely, if I were you, I’d use it to call my lawyer instead," the guard added.

"And what makes you think I’d need a lawyer. I’m innocent and willl be out as soon as that is clarified.

The guard didn’t waste his breath arguing with Dolly but just shrugged before leading her to the room where her phone was kept.

He’d seen so many like her before who were so self righteous but still ended up guilty of the crime they so passionately denied.

*********

Isabella, who was chilling with some friends on the beach, saw her phone flash with light and looked away when she saw the caller ID.

"Aren’t you going to pick your call?" One of her friends asked.

"It’s not important, Carol," Isabella said casually.

Carol shrugged and continued with their discussion but Isabella’s mind had drifted off.

How dare Dolly have the guts to call her after stealing the man God had delivered to her doorstep free of charge? She’s in for a shock if she thinks she’ll easily forgive her.

"Are you sure you don’t want to answer?" Rita, her other friend, asked with a worried expression. "It’s Dolly calling," she said as she knew how close Isabella and Dolly were.

"You know she’s the one, yet you still expect me to pick the call?"

Rita frowned in confusion. "Why won’t you pick her calls? I thought you guys had settled your differences?"

"You think a measly apology can undo what she did to me?" Isabella retorted. "If you’re tired of hanging out with me, we can as well as call it a day."

"Hey, girlfriend, it hasn’t come to that," Rita reached out to stop Isabella who was already rising from the mat. "Okay, I’m sorry. I know Dolly messed up, big time but why allow yourself to be so worked up. I heard the guy in question has moved on to his latest catch... I can’t recall her name."

"You mean Lauren? She was the winner of the competition that was held some months ago. Maybe that was where they met," Carol said.

"The guy must be a playboy. The way he changes girls... I bet it takes him just that amount of time to change into his brief,," Rita said and they all birst out laughing.

"Believe me, girlfriend, such a guy is not good for you. You should be happy you weren’t that deep into him when he revealed his true colours.
