The pamphlet was titled: "On the Nature of the Divine: A Systematic Inquiry."

"But efficiency is not divinity. A machine that operates with maximum efficiency is still a machine. The question is not whether the machine works. The question is whether the machine is sacred."
"We propose that it is not."
Ryn put the pamphlet down.
The argument was familiar โ heโd heard versions of it in tavern conversations, in Academy debates, in the oblique questions that critical thinkers asked when they looked at the systemโs mechanics and noticed that the mechanics looked very much like rules and rules looked very much like code. But this version was different. This version wasnโt angry. This version wasnโt polemical. This version was calm. One Northern District chapel โ placed in the community bookshelf, available to the public." He paused. "Simultaneous distribution across seven sites requires coordination. This isnโt a lone scholar printing in a basement. This is an *organization*."
"Corvelโs network?"
"Corvelโs network was him and a printing press. This is different. The pamphletโs production quality requires a professional printing operation โ proper typesetting, high-quality paper, consistent formatting. Someone with resources is funding this."
Ryn looked at the pamphlet. The argument sat on the page โ calm, structured, devastating. Not because it was wrong. Because it was close. Close enough to the truth that dismissing it required either theological sophistication that most believers didnโt have, or the willingness to accept that some questions shouldnโt be asked.
"The Mechanist position has evolved," Thresh said. "Corvelโs pamphlets were Phase One โ provocative, crude, designed to introduce the question. This pamphlet is Phase Two โ the question refined into a respectable intellectual position. Phase One generates awareness. Phase Two generates credibility."
"And Phase Three?"
"Phase Three is the part that worries me. When an intellectual position achieves credibility, it attracts followers. When it attracts followers, it becomes a movement. When it becomes a movement, it either gets absorbed into the institutional framework or it gets suppressed. There is no third option."
"The institutional framework being..."
"The Crucible absorbs it โ acknowledges the Mechanist question as a legitimate theological inquiry, incorporates it into Scriptist academic discourse, and neutralizes it through academic containment. The question lives, but it lives inside a library, where questions go to be studied without consequence."
"And suppression?"
"Suppression means declaring the pamphlet heretical, banning its distribution, identifying and prosecuting its authors under the Crucibleโs doctrinal authority." Threshโs expression was the controlled neutrality of an intelligence operative who had opinions he would not share. "Suppression works in the short term. It fails in the long term. Suppressed ideas donโt die โ they go underground, acquire the glamour of persecution, and resurface with more energy than they had before."
"Which option will the Crucible choose?"
"That depends on the Pope. A pastoral Pope โ Elwynโs model โ absorbs. The question becomes scholarship. A political Pope โ Theronโs model โ suppresses. The question becomes heresy."
And Elwyn is dying. And Theron is positioning. And the Mechanist question โ the question that is dangerously close to the truth โ will be answered not by evidence but by whoever wins the succession.

What if theyโre right?
Not entirely right. Not about everything.
