The General's Wife Wants to Leave-Chapter 179: A blurry reflection from behind
Chapter 179: A blurry reflection from behind
With his eyes never leaving her, Joanna made a decision after taking a certain time of contemplation, realizing that she was in an urgent situation and had no other option to do.
"C-can you please help me to have a look over the back part of my dress, Sir Canillas?" Joanna nervously spoke after taking a deep breath to gather her courage to pose a daring request.
She did not have any choice but to ask for her husband’s help to have a look at her appearance, as she thought that, after her rampant movement during the dispute with him a few moments ago, there might be something misplaced with her attire.
There was no Bianca with her at the moment whom she could ask for help fixing if there was something not in the right place with the dress she wore. Her only companion was none other than her husband—the man who caused her to flurry frantically because she just mistakenly thought of him having a plan to do something that would hurt her.
Who ever thought that his kind purpose ended up making her spruce appearance a bit disordered from both fighting him and enjoying the acquaintances he introduced her where the night breeze kept blowing around them?
Apart from that, he had fervently reminded her about the same suggestion, shrugging off her objection, saying that they could communicate about anything that they wanted to share without hesitation, including the problems they had. It was not only because he cared for her, but also because they were husband and wife.
It might be a burden for him, although he said that there was no need to feel burdened between husband and wife. Aside from that, he might respond to her with an action that made her flutter, like when she had gathered her determination to talk to him on their way to the capital as she followed his suggestion for the same thing after she served him tea of reconciliation.
Because of his unpredictable response, she was reluctant to initiate a conversation with him again, as she could not bear the response he gave her with boundless affectionate gestures.
But she wanted to resume what she had done, although the main reason was that she needed his help this time. Nonetheless, she needed something as a reason to get used to building communication with him because he would never stop demanding that of her and because he cared for her.
Without taking more than five seconds after she finished conveying what she needed from him, Joanna found Canillas making his way toward her.
As he walked toward her, Joanna turned her body around to face the glass door. There, through the blurry reflection in the glass door, she found her husband’s tall body appearing from behind her.
Their gazes met in the reflection of the glass door. Although it was not clear enough, his green eyes made Joanna drift her eyes away, as once again she found herself still unable to put up with the intensity that those piercing eyes directed at her.
When she had her eyes fixed at one point but not the man behind her, she heard him say, "Four buttons unfastened."
As she heard those three words, Joanna’s heart skipped a beat before it went rampant once more. She really had no choice at the moment. Fastening the buttons on her back was something that was impossible to do by herself, but her husband could.
Because of the inevitable reality and the fact that they had to return to the main hall as soon as possible, once again, Joanna posed a daring request with her heart hammering in her chest.
"C-can you please fix it for me, Sir Canillas?" Joanna’s trembling voice was very low, barely audible to one’s ears. She still had no courage to look straight at the man behind her when she uttered the request.
Subsequently, Joanna lowered her head and gripped her skirt when she noticed Canillas take steps closer to her back, and her breath hitched when she felt him touch the lower part of her back.
Not long after, the touch crawled up to the middle part of her back and lingered longer there, as probably more buttons unfastened from the buttonholes in that area.
It was Joanna’s thought before she held her breath as she suddenly felt cold fingertips brush her bare skin below the nape of her neck, which was positioned above the backline of her dress that sat in the middle of her shoulder blades.
The top button seemed to be unfastened. It was Joanna’s next thought, and it deviated to the difficulty of the button on that part being fastened as she felt him taking a longer time there with his fingertips repeatedly brushing and tickling her skin.
When Joanna still wondered how long the button could be fastened, suddenly she felt a pair of hands apply gentle pressure on her shoulders, as if massaging her, causing her to flinch and raise her shoulders in response to the sudden touch on the part of her body where she could feel his rough skin rubbing the exposed skin on her shoulders and nape.
In a swift moment, before she could react more, she perceived a peculiar yet familiar sensation on her nape. Immediately, in reflex, Joanna turned around and put her hand on Canillas’ chest as she tried to stop him from doing more than what he just surprisingly did.
Shaking her head, Joanna muttered in a whisper, "No." freēwēbnovel.com
Staring at each other in close proximity, with his face quite at the same level as hers as he had not retracted completely from what he just did, or if indicating that he would do something more if she did not stop him, Joanna did not say any word after that.
She just held the eyes, which stared at her in a daze.
Joanna was afraid if the man that she had thought to have bad intentions a moment ago appeared at the moment. But she refrained from both accusing and doubting him.
She wanted to trust him this time. She wanted to see if he was still the man of his words. Hence, she appeared calm, although inside she was in havoc.
She wanted to run, but she chose to stay still, face-to-face with her husband, with her hand still on his chest, where she could feel his hard heartbeat pulsating under her palm. And it made her heart beat at the same pace as his.
She would trust him that he would never hurt her. She would not use guilt and compassion to play her role as his wife, just like he advised her a fleeting moment ago.
