Chapter 191: Wise with the pick

He was different from his wife, who held the courtesy of nobility that had been taught to her highly. He was not an aristocrat, and he did not wish to be one of them or act highly like those arrogant human beings.

He was pleased with the blood that flowed through his body. Being bound by too many non-sense rules was never his favorite. Yet he would keep his respect and understanding for his wife, as it was hard to change what had been taught and implemented in her whole life until now.

Canillas knew that well, and he would not demand for her to change for his sake. How could he be selfish to ask her for a change toward something that he was reluctant to do if he was asked to?

For him, seeing the diversity that came from her side would give color to his life. If one day a miracle was bestowed upon them, for them to be able to share good news with others, he wanted her, the mother, who would take most of the part in nurturing their children. He believed that their children would have a decent upbringing with her as their mother.

A mother with a loving nature, which he witnessed when she embraced all the kids in the Powel Orphanage, and a mother with humility, which was rare to be found in upper-class society, were the things that would make her the most beautiful mother, just like how she became the most beautiful lady in his eyes with those dearest natures.

Setting aside the now empty bowl, he wiped his lips with the napkin that had already been prepared beforehand on the table on each seat by the servant after taking a sip of wine to wash his mouth.

Placing the napkin back on the table, he turned to face his bewildered wife, about to resume his speech for not only her but also all the scrutinizing eyes, who obviously showed the same reaction and perception as his wife toward his conduct just now.

"If you think it is not hygienic..." Canillas took a pause, smiling broadly before saying, "It is absurd to think about hygienic between husband and wife. How can husband and wife copulate if they put concern on that nonsense? You know that we..." But Canillas could not finish his words as he was interrupted as expected.

Upon hearing his words, Joanna, who had just recovered from her bewildered state, was again back in that state. However, she could not stay in that state for too long, or else everything would go into disarray because of his mischievous side that emerged out of the blue.

Sensing that the mischievous man was about to say something that would make people around them squint their eyes more while some covered their mouths with their hands, Joanna hurriedly grabbed his arm. "I will finish the next meal. It is just... you know why..." Joanna trailed off after quickly speaking out to stop him from uttering any playful remark that would not impact them in a positive way, as others would not be able to catch his words as playful ones.

Even though Joanna did not elaborate on the reason why she could not finish her meal, she believed that the mischievous man, who was now looking at her with a playful glint in his eyes, knew exactly the reason, recalling how much he cared for her wellbeing.

It was not a new thing for Joanna not to be able to finish the food that she ate at banquets and other social events. She could eat, but not much, and it was just for the sake of respecting the hosts or hostess of the events. Aside from that, her father always reminded her to fill her stomach, although it was only a small amount of food.

Nonetheless, at the moment, Joanna felt that she was already full with all the eyes that were never tired of being aimed at her. Not to forget the demeaning words she heard not long ago, which made her lose her appetite even more.

On the other hand, Canillas, who felt amused by Joanna’s reaction to his remark that was primarily meant to entertain the annoying probing spectators, who seemed unable to move their attention from him and his wife, indeed knew why she could not finish the meal, which, for him, was classified as light cuisine that was easy to savor.

However, at the moment, without disregarding her situation, which made her more conscious of her surroundings, Canillas wanted to share his perspective with her so that she, as his wife, would understand why he was stern in terms of food.

He wanted her to know that he was not being firm with his advice without reason.

It had been long for Canillas to always put matter about someone not finishing their meals because, just like he had said to her, out there there were those who had unfortunate lives that made them unable to afford their daily meals. Hence, leaving food over was something that Canillas tried to avoid as much as he could, and he wanted his wife to understand that.

He would not force her to finish all the food that was served on the dining table because he also could not do that. What he wanted from her was that she finish the food that she had taken on her plate. He wanted her to be wise with what she had picked.

Gladfully, during his time interacting with her, only one time he had seen her not finish the food that she had picked on her plate apart from this occasion, and it was when she was in the restaurant inn after their encounter with the impudent Viscount, who also disregarded someone with lower status than him.

But now he knew why she could not finish her meals that time, because he knew why she could not finish her meals this time. It was none other than the problems she had—the problem that gave him a reason to be in a private moment with her, although it made them the subject of gossiping events.

Self-conscious over her surroundings and anxiety in the crowd. The situations that brought them to peace under the grace of moonlight.

Or perhaps because of all the words that had been thrown at him, she had difficulty swallowing what she left in her bowl? Canillas wondered with less expectation.
