The General's Wife Wants to Leave-Chapter 219: Never once before
Chapter 219: Never once before
"Do you want anything else to eat, my lady?" Bianca asked. She stood on the side of the bed where Joanna sat, with her back leaned against the pillows that were stacked against the headboard.
Staring down at a medium bowl of wheat porridge mixed with vegetables, a few pieces of braised meat, a small glass of milk, and a few slices of apple that was set on the bed tray table before her, Joanna shook her head as she thought that those were more than enough to have for dinner, particularly for a patient like her.
"It is enough, Bianca. Thank you," Joanna replied with a kind smile.
Taking a seat on a chair that was positioned near the bed, Bianca accompanied Joanna to have her dinner.
It had been two nights since the incident that turned her master’s residence into mayhem. How could it not be if her young lady, who went to the banquet with a dashingly astonishing look, walking hand in hand with her husband, who shared the same polished appearance with a smile painted on both beautiful faces, returned with her being carried motionlessly by her husband.
What added to the horror sight aside from their disheveled state was that blood could be spotted on their skin and attire, especially after the tailcoat of her young lady’s husband that was wrapped around her body was removed.
Everything happened so quickly, making it hard to discern. There was no peace or tranquility that night.
Her master ordered the security around the mansion to be tightened. He had even asked Sir Sylvester to gather all the staff who resided in the mansion and investigate if there were intruders.
The husband of her young lady looked like a madman, pleading yet threatening the doctor who treated her young lady.
’Please save her. Don’t let anything bad happen to her.’
It was what he said multiple times with his distraught looks. He even refused to leave the room when the doctor asked him to, not leaving her young lady when she was being examined. Only then did he leave when the examination was over, being confirmed multiple times that she was fine and that her young lady needed to be washed up.
After that, she saw him step into her young lady room in the same attire and look, not leaving that room until the sun cast its first morning glow. And he did not appear until now, which made her young lady ask her whether her husband had returned.
It was like this night. Bianca watched the same view when she was in her young lady’s room, attending to her—that her young lady almost never removed her gaze from the door after uttering the same question.
She also hurriedly turned her gaze toward the door when the sound of footsteps directed toward her room. Anticipation and enthusiasm were clear and unhidden, as she seemed to forget to mask her demeanor. She forgot to appear like she had been looked like all this time with regard to her treatment and action toward her husband.
But then again, disappointment took over all the bright facial expression, blowing out the anticipation and enthusiasm when the one who entered or passed her room was not the person she had been waiting for.
"His Majesty may give a heavy task for General von Rodega to carry out, my lady," Bianca said, trying to appease all the disappointment and worry that she believed had been felt by her young lady against the absence of her husband.
Withdrawing her gaze from the closed door that Joanna felt had become her routine since she returned home after experiencing that incident, she smiled faintly as she looked at Bianca. "It seems to be that," Joanna responded before lowering her head to begin savoring the warm porridge that was served in a porcelain bowl.
Bianca was right. Her husband might not be able to see her because the King, who favored him a lot, did not let him loose, particularly after he was being gifted with tremendous generosity.
Joanna was also well aware that she could not complain, as she knew that it was the consequences that she had to endure to become the wife of a person who was relied upon by the two nations.
But should His Majesty be so heartless for not letting him at least get a few hours of rest? Joanna could not help but complain inwardly while putting a slice of braised meat into her mouth.
Hardly swallowing the meat that she had chewed, Joanna wanted to stop eating.
She actually did not have any appetite at all, but she refrained from not finishing her meals as she remembered what her husband shared with her about the importance of appreciating and being grateful for all the privilege they had to enjoy food without any obstacles while some others might have to put more effort to afford.
"Please don’t get disheartened, my lady. General von Rodega will surely come to have a look at you once he returns." Bianca still made an effort to cheer her young lady, who looked dispirited.
To Bianca’s relief as she observed closer, her young lady’s complexion was not as pale as before, noticeably implying that there was quite significant improvement in her condition.
Joanna nodded her head with a smile, feeling the sincerity in Bianca’s effort to cheer her up. "I know. Thank you, Bianca," replied Joanna, lowering her head before lifting it again in no time to look back at the senior maid, who sat not far from her bed.
"Please prepare dinner and hot water for Sir Canillas when he returns," she demanded, considering that he should have been very tired from lack of rest. Hot water and a proper dinner would be helpful to calm his nerves, subside fatigue, and revive his energy.
Smiling warmly at the young lady who looked at her sheepishly but was trying to appear as calm as possible when delivering the task that she had never asked her before, Bianca said, "I will, my lady."
Receiving the answer from Bianca, Joanna was back to lower her head. She knew that Bianca found her action to be hilarious.
Never once before did she show care about her husband. So far, it was her father who ordered all the servants to serve him properly, as he was not a guest but a part of his family.
Never once did she ask Bianca to do anything for him. Even when he was in the Powel Orphanage, he took care of himself, although it was the first time for him to be there.
All thanks to all the elderly who treated him as an important person without her asking them to do that in the first place.
Never once did he demand she do what a wife should do until now. He had also never complained to her, who did not care about his wellbeing.
A sharp pang struck Joanna’s heart at the thought. How heartless she was to him, but he accepted her with all the lack that she had. Yet he always called her his wife—his beautiful wife. And she wanted to see him now.
Joanna once again brought her gaze toward the door that was still closed, expecting it to be opened by the one whom she was eager to see at the moment.
