Chapter 229: Are you fine?

Finding Canillas making his way back toward her bed, Joanna, who had pushed her body up to sit on the bed, looked up at him, who was now standing near her bed.

"It is already late. Go back to sleep," Canillas suggested, staring down at Joanna.

"Talk with me a little bit. What happened? Are you fine?" Joanna prompted Canillas to talk to her, considering a possibility for him to leave again tomorrow morning before she was awake.

"Marvin came to visit me. I urged him to tell me more about you being mad during the meeting with His Majesty," Joanna said, trying to lure the silent Canillas to talk to her while implicitly sharing information about the agenda of Marvin coming to see her, as she believed that Canillas knew that she was with Marvin in the back garden.

If he did not know that, then just regarded what she informed as her effort to be open to him in their marital relationship.

"So please tell me, Sir Canillas. Are you fine? Did His Majesty inflict something on you in return for that?" Worry was evident in Joanna’s soft voice, pushing his buttton to answer to her inquiries.

Holding each other in the eyes before being broken away by none other than the person who had never once beat her in their staring contest, Joanna noticed him change his mind from taking a seat on the edge of the bed to dragging a chair to be seated near her bed instead.

As Canillas had taken a seat on the chair that he had lifted to be put down near her bed, Joanna stacked her pillows to have her back lean against them, feeling relieved that Canillas was willing to talk to her.

"Captain Zilberman was right that I was mad and still mad." Canillas began, looking straight at the dancing flame in the fireplace instead of Joanna’s face. "I went back to have an audience with him."

Canillas did not bother to show respect in his speech, but Joanna knew what the ’him’ referred to that was spoken in a tone that clearly depicted annoyance.

Good thing that only she and him were in the room at the moment, and he did not use improper terms despite his annoyance. Otherwise, she had no other choice but to cover his mouth with her hand so that he would not invite unnecessary trouble.

"For the Tres could penetrate the capital and even the castle, I highly complained about that. I have strongly suggested they all put this matter into main concern right after I heard about the Tres infiltrated Terra and abducted people. But they seemed to put other matters, such as haughty celebrations, over the security of their land," Canillas remarked, gritting his teeth before rubbing his face with both hands, a gesture to attempt to calm his emotions.

"I am sorry for making you worry," Canillas stated, bringing his gaze toward Joanna before drifting them away back to the fireplace that was located on the other side of Joanna’s bed, once he put down both of his hands to rest on the armrest of the chair. "I couldn’t come home and see you because I was reek of blood."

He did not count how many Tres he had tortured until blood spurred out from their bodies with his hands in order to make them open their filthy mouths to tell him about the truth he needed to know.

He also did not count how many of them had lost their lives when they were being stubborn to provoke him by refusing to answer his questions yet blabbering and cursing over other things that included the person dear to him.

On the other side, watching the man sitting next to her bed fervently, Joanna agreed with what had been told by Marvin. Although she did not see with her own eyes how angry he was at that time, she could feel it now when he was delivering every single word to her.

Seeing him stare at the fireplace in silence, Joanna asked, "So has everything been solved now? Were there any victims aside from me?" She met Canillas’ eyes as she questioned him before they averted away after lingering about a couple of seconds on her neck.

Rose from the chair, Canillas walked casually toward the fireplace. Crouching down, he tossed two pieces of logs of wood in there. "They are so loyal and stubborn. It was not easy to make them open their mouths, revealing the truth to the party that they had counted as an eternal enemy."

He had tortured them all in regard to making them tell him anything, including where their bases were, but until some of them lost their breaths, they still kept their mouths shut. They even spit on his face, which caused him to punch their faces hard, knocking out their teeth.

"It is still not safe out there. We must stay alert," Canillas stated, still making himself busy in front of the fireplace, which made Joanna notice his dampened hair was now almost dry.

"And there were no victims. Two ladies aside from you were managed to be saved. Thanks to Captain Zilberman for announcing the chief guard about the situation so most of them could be captured on time." Canillas’ deep voice filled the room, blending with the sound of crackling wood.

He was glad that despite his wounds, that young Captain ran the order he asked him to carry out, although some of them unfortunately managed to escape. Yet Canillas also felt frustrated. Even though some of them were managed to be captured, none of them were prone to pain. And none of them was the person he looked for.

Perhaps they were in overwhelming pain as the torture he inflicted on them could not be regarded as tolerable, recalling how other guards flinched and averted their eyes when they watched him use any method he usually used to torture his rebellious hostages.

"Does it mean that we have to stay here until they are all captured?" Joanna inquired after a little bit loosening her tense knowing there were no other victims from the incident that night.

She also felt proud of Marvin. As per her husband’s information, which was new to her, it was Marvin who took part in calling off their harmful agenda.

Meanwhile, upon hearing Joanna’s question, Canillas’ hand that was moving to flip the wood in the fireplace stopped midway before it moved again about three seconds later.

Placing the tong back on the metal bucket that was placed near the fireplace, Canillas stood up and walked back to where he previously sat.

Not taking a seat, as he stood instead, he stared down at Joanna and said, "I will arrange with your father for us to return to Barasca the day after tomorrow. After we stay in Barasca for three days as I need to prepare all the important things that we need during the journey, we’ll depart to Archess." While saying that, Canillas kept his eyes lingering on Joanna’s face, not breaking away, although he noticed she also lingered her gaze on his face.

"Go back to sleep, Joanna. It’s already late," Canillas said after a few moments of silence before drifting his eyes away from the face that he had not seen properly for so long. "Good night."

With that, Canillas left Joanna’s room, leaving Joanna alone on her bed, staring into the figure that disappeared behind the closed door.
