Chapter 236: Extinguish the flame

Joanna felt strange. All her senses were occupied with peculiar sensations that felt like her core was being burned.

The wet sensations of the lips that trailed on her body—she could clearly feel them.

She felt how her body was caressed to the point where all the fibers in her being were burned ablaze.

She felt how her body responded to make her confused about how to react against all the pleasure that consumed her for the first time in her life.

Yet she knew what they were doing. She was not that oblivious and naive not to know where it would end if none of them initiated to make it stop. But she could not resist him.

She was not sure if it was the indescribable pleasure that conquered her consciousness or the emotions of the man who was now on top of her body, trapping her under his large frame, that made her let him do what a married couple who had not consummated their marriage was supposed to do at this very moment.

Or it was her who finally considered that it was time for them to consummate their marriage, to seal their bond as husband and wife, for the fate that had been set for them in this lifetime.

Still, she was not sure.

All she could do was bit her lower lips to prevent her from making another sound that sounded strange in her own ears when it first escaped her lips a few seconds ago.

Even opening her eyes to watch what the man who held the status of her husband did to her body was impossible to do. Hence, she just closed her eyes, enduring the consequences of the pleasure that was gently derived by her husband becoming more perceivable to all of her senses.

Until a pair of green eyes popped up in her mind, making her eyes flew open and grabbing the hand that had caressed her body fervently, preventing it from moving further to ignite a more unstoppable desire.

Breathing heavily through her parted lips, Joanna’s hazy gaze moved from the ceiling down toward her chest, only to see dark brown hair before a pair of green eyes met her own eyes.

As their eyes intertwined in the air, Joanna felt the hand that she was grabbing leave one of her bosoms.

Eventually, Joanna’s other hand that had gripped the bedsheet reached out, about to touch the corner of the reddening eyes where a tear came into her sight. But before it rolled down his cheek, the man broke his gaze from hers and grabbed her hand, stopping it from reaching its destination.

"Sleep. It is already late." A hoarse, deep voice seeped in Joanna’s ears.

In a fleeting second later, she felt the mild pressure on top of her body disappear, replaced with a blanket that was placed by the man who was now climbing down the bed and stepping into the bathroom.

As the broad back of the man disappeared behind the bathroom door, Joanna took a rapid breath before pushing her trembling body up to sit on the bed.

Still bewildered with what she saw and the intimacy that abruptly over, Joanna looked down at her body, only to find in what state she was at the moment when the blanket that was placed by her husband slid down to her waist.

Feeling her heart continued to pound violently in her chest, along with her quickening breath, Joanna hurriedly pulled up the neckline of her nightgown that slid down, leaving her shoulders and the swell of her bosoms bare.

If there was no interruption that came from her, all that she had hidden well from others’ eyes except from her handmaids would have been revealed by now. That thought alone had made her want to extinguish the flame that swirled in the fireplace so that the heat on her body could be subsided.

After tying the string of her nightgown over her chest, while ignoring the wetness that was left by her husband on the area of her neck to her chest, Joanna touched her lips before covering her face with her trembling hands while trying to steady her breath and heartbeat, calming her nerves and composure.

For some reason, Joanna did not wear the robe she usually wore when she shared a bed with Canillas this night.

Joanna was not sure either with every decision that she had made. Was it because she had felt comfortable with him so that she felt that she did not need to do something as an extra protection as she usually did?

But if Joanna thought more clearly as she had passed a situation that made her mind not able to think straight, as if she surrendered on the desire and pleasure that washed over her a few moment ago, she knew one thing why she had her defensive state crumbled.

The wave of emotions that had filled her days after that incident and after the man who kept on wandering around her suddenly made an absence from her sight had made her restless. There was something that made her feel empty.

Aside from that, all the emotions that had emanated from Canillas were also still playing vividly in her mind.

When she found him come to her room that night, perhaps the nights before, without her knowing that as she had already sunk in the deep slumber, she could not lie that she felt utterly joy and relief.

All the relentless restlessness disappeared. The emptiness vanished. She could find her peace again. She could breathe again.

The knot of the questions that had not been distangled tangled more in her mind. Was it because of that she was ready to consummate their marriage, sealing their bond as husband and wife?

Or perhaps it was triggered by the dream that she had after the incident. Was it because she was afraid of what she had seen in the dream—that he turned his back on her, ignoring and leaving her—would happen in real life?

Probably the answer was yes. It was a yes until she saw that pair of green eyes that suddenly popped up in her mind, giving an alarm to stop every peculiar sensation before it went too far and was not able to be reversed anymore.

She was oblivious to whose eyes those were. But for sure it was not the green eyes that she had seen so many times from the man who, until now, was still in the bathroom. But as Joanna thought more, a deep crease was formed between her brows before her heartbeat paced up and restlessness in her heart regrew relentlessly.

However, before she could make sure that she got the exact answer to that question, the train of knotted thoughts in Joanna’s mind came to an abrupt halt when she did not hear the sound of flowing water anymore and there was a click sound that came from the other side of the bathroom door.

In a haste, Joanna laid back on the bed, pulling the blanket up to her neck and closing her eyes.

Upon what she was doing, she just did not know how to face the man who was now approaching the bed. She could not settle her nervousness when she came to the thought that he had seen and touched her body, as the soberness gradually returned to her mind, following the intoxication that seemed to be lifted from her senses.

Hence, Joanna pretended to sleep, which was for sure not to come unnoticed by Canillas.
