Chapter 39: The other end of the long corridor

With the wooden box in his hands, he looked up at his wife and asked, "Is it the box that you meant?"

Joanna nodded her head in response to his inquiry. She then pointed at the drawer where the tray of the jug of water and the glass were placed.

"Please take the key to unlock the box. It is in the drawer," Joanna directed Canillas, and Canillas did as was instructed.

It was not difficult for Canillas to find the key once he pulled out the drawer, as the key was placed in an open position for the eyes.

With the key in his hand, Canillas unlocked the box and lifted the lid open, only to cause him to blink his eyes at the sight that was revealed in the opened box. freёwebnoѵel.com

There were several small bottles of various colors of liquid lying neatly inside the wooden box. It was soon followed by a mixture of fragrance wafted into his nose.

Were all of them made by this woman? Canillas wondered at the discovery that was unique to him. If so, then his wife was indeed a talent.

He was not sure if others would have the same opinion about his talented wife as him, but Canillas, who had never seen this before, was certain that one should be very knowledgeable and skillful in order to create the various liquids that seemed to be not easy to obtain.

"Please find a bottle with a light yellow liquid and the name of the label on the bottle is Alenna 10," informed Joanna in a slightly raspy voice.

Canillas had no longer time to be immersed in the sight before his eyes and soon he proceeded to search for the bottle that was needed by his talented wife.

There were three bottles with similar light yellow colors and Canillas carefully read the label that was written on the body of the bottle one by one, as if to avoid making any mistake that would be a danger to her instead.

Once he found the bottle that was labeled as Alenna 10, he handed it over to his wife after opening the lid, as he was aware that she would not be able to open it in her current condition, with weak and swollen hands.

Joanna held her trembling hand out to take the bottle and brought it close to her mouth, gulping down all the contents of the bitter liquid in the bottle with a grimacing face.

Handing the empty bottle to the General who was squatting in front of her, Joanna mouthed a thank you, to which the General nodded and smiled. She then saw him put the empty bottle back inside the box. After locking the box, he placed the key back in its previous position in the drawer beside the bed.

Looking down at the General while he looked up at her, she heard him say, "You can get back to rest." His voice was low and soft, enough to imply that he was calm now. There was no annoyance displayed on his face like before. It was like welcoming a rainbow after a storm.

At his suggestion, Joanna slightly nodded her head and slowly pushed her body backward to the middle of the bed where she previously had occupied to sleep.

Lying down on the bed, Joanna covered her body with a blanket, pulling it up to her nose, and leaving her eyes upward to be exposed.

Joanna subtly glanced at the General who was standing beside her bed and looking down at her in silence.

Would he stay in her room again while she slept later? Or would he head to the room that had been prepared by her father? Joanna questioned in her mind. But she refrained from asking him as she did not want to make him think that she cared for him.

She was aware that her conduct before might cause the General to think that she had softened and had accepted him and their marriage. Joanna could not help but admit that she felt wrong after asking for his help.

Finding him to help her without any comments, not even teasing her, she felt like there was a knot inside her heart which made her regret if the General was mistakenly thinking about her action.

She wanted to tell him that she had not changed her mind. But she was too weak to let out a word which would likely end up with uncountable words later, realizing that both of them were indeed equally stubborn.

Besides, she also did not want him to apply his other method to make her stop winding up, as listening to his threat alone had made a shiver run down her spine, especially when his cool breath reverberated on her lips. As the memory surfaced, Joanna suddenly closed her eyes shut, as if wanting to remove it from her mind.

She was really thankful for his help before and she had conveyed her thanks to him. She considered that it was only a normal signature to give as a human being, sending gratitude for the help that was received. And she wanted him to think simply like that, that there was nothing special about their previous interaction and she hoped he got that message.

Hence, Joanna, who had closed her eyes, chose not to utter any words, attempting to sleep instead as it was also getting hard for her to fight her heavy eyelids.

On the other hand, Canillas lifted one corner of his lips as he saw his wife was back at her cold side. She ignored her husband who had helped her just now. She casually lay in the middle of the bed as if silently letting him know that the bed was hers and would not be shared with others, including the man who was her husband.

She did not even bother to ask him where he would sleep later.

Smiling, Canillas shook his head and let out a quiet sigh. It was indeed going to be a very challenging marital life as his intriguing wife seemed to be difficult to tame. Canillas thought in his mind.

"Good night, Joanna," Canillas murmured, about to call for the day.

He was also very tired. It made him feel overwhelmed when he noticed that he felt far more tired compared to when he handled anything related to his military duty.

With that, he made his way toward the door after putting back the book that belonged to the lady on the bookshelf.

He closed the door after sparing his sleeping wife one last look and headed to the room that had been prepared by his father-in-law after handing the glass of unused antidote to the servant who passed through the corridor.

Canillas clicked his tongue when he noticed the distance between the room of his wife and his assigned room, which was at the other end of the long corridor.

Why did his father-in-law assign that room to him while there was a closer room next to his wife’s room? A heavy sigh escaped from his lips as he casually walked down the corridor with that question in his mind.

What else should he expect from a father who loved his daughter dearly? And he knew the answer to his own question.

Smiling at the thought of his amusing new family, he kept on walking through the dimly lit and quiet corridor.
