Chapter 46: Beyond common sense

Time was ticking by. In the quiet room, only the ticking sound of a grandfather clock that stood in one corner of the room resonated. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

But Canillas, who stood still in the middle of the room of the disappeared woman, did not count how many seconds had passed, as if he let himself drown in the soundless abyss.

His head lowered. His eyes closed shut. His shaking hands were balled into fists.

As an indefinite time passed, the raging breath had finally calmed down, pacing at a steady pace, flowing with the ticking sound of the clock in harmony.

The closed eyes were opened, sparkling with heavy intensity in the dark room, reflecting the light of the moon that dwelled in the room.

Without sparing another last look, Canillas left the empty room. He made his way at a calm yet threatening pace through corridor after corridor. The sound of his heavy steps broke the silence in the corridors he passed through until he came to a halt, standing in the middle of an empty, dim-lit corridor.

He looked ahead. Opposite him was a maid walking in his direction with piles of folded clothes in her hands.

Belated noticing the General stood a few steps away from her, the maid ceased abruptly from her track and offered a polite bow to the General. When she was about to turn around after sending the General her silent greeting, as she wanted to take another route so that she would not walk past next to the General who brought a daunting atmosphere around him, she was stopped by the General’s deep voice.

"Do you know where Lady Joanna has gone to?" Canillas asked the maid.

He had made his decision. He would not give up on their marriage. Why did he have to be defeated by a timid-looking yet cold-hearted woman?

Why did he have to surrender easily to such a woman who did not respect him? He was a prominent General of Archess. It would be a shame for such a great general who had won glory after glory to be beaten by that kind of woman.

Wasn’t it more interesting if he could play along with the woman who had claimed herself as a liar, insane, and stubborn?

Aside from that, he also wanted to know how long she would bear acting with this kind of cold behavior. He also wanted to know how many cards she had under her sleeve that she would use to achieve the goal she desperately dreamed of, which was to end their marriage and be free from him.

One thing for sure was that he would not let this woman defeat him. If one person should be tamed, then he would be the one to tame her.

Such a rare, intriguing woman. Why did he have to let her go?

Canillas had made up his mind to capture and tame his intriguing wife, to remind her that letting her go and giving up on their marriage was just a dream that would never come true.

At the question aimed at her, the young, petite maid shook her head in quick motion immediately while shrinking in front of the General with fear.

The maid then offered Canillas another polite bow but before she could manage to leave by taking another route she previously planned to head to, she froze like a statue. Her widened eyes fell on the tip of the sharp blade of a sword that was pointed two inches away from her nose.

If the handmaiden of his wife was not willing to tell him the exact location of her beloved master because of her loyalty, he would not waste time any longer forcing her to tell him the truth.

If he could use the method he was used to implementing to make his enemies reveal any information he wanted to know about, he would have tortured her. But he could not do that to someone who seemed to be close and dear to his wife.

Hence, he would find another prey that seemed to have no close bond with his wife, but knowing about her and easy to bend.

"Tell me or you will not see the sunrise the next morning," Canillas threatened the trembling maid, his voice heavy and deep, echoing through the cold air in the tranquil corridor.

He was aware of what most of the maids tended to do in noble houses. From the outside, they looked obedient and knew nothing about their masters or anything revolving around the houses where they had been employed, as they showed that they knew the boundaries that should not be crossed.

But the truth was that they loved gossiping and digging for information about the private matters of their masters, as they would have no doubt planted their ears and eyes behind the walls.

However, what if the unlucky maid before him happened to be a loyal and obedient one? Would she keep sealing her mouth, not willing to leak the secret about her master, even though a sword was pointed at her?

"L-Lady J-Joanna is in the P-Powel O-Orphanage, S-Sir," the maid stammered heavily, tears streaming down her reddened cheeks.

Fortunately, he found someone who was not willing to exchange life for loyalty and obedience.

"Where is it?" Canillas still aimed his sword at the maid. The sharp blade glistened under the minimal glow of lanterns that were lit along the corridor, adding horror to the pitiful state of the maid.

"I-It is in the W-West Lane M-Mountain, S-Sir." The maid sobbed. The piles of clothes in her hands were shaking due to her trembling hands, causing two folded clothes on the top to fall onto the marble floor due to her frightened state.

Upon hearing the response he got, Canillas’ figure turned stiff like a statue, almost similar to the posture of the maid when he pointed the sword at her. The answer he received was indeed like a sword pointed at him.

"Can you repeat where it is again?" Canillas inquired again, as if not hearing the previous answer that was given by the trembling maid or wanting to make sure that the maid did not deliver the wrong answer to him due to her frightened state.

"W-W-West Lane Mountain, S-Sir. P-Please spare m-my life, S-Sir" the young maid pleaded in stutter. The sob had turned into a heavy cry, causing one more piece of clothing to drop onto the floor.

"Thank you for your answer. I will spare your life this time." Putting the sword back into its sheath, Canillas left the crying maid after taking the fallen clothes from the floor and placing them back on top of the piled clothes that were brought by her.

He previously thought that there was something wrong with his hearing senses due to his fatigue after a long trip from Seidel or his irritated feelings towards the irresistible behavior of his wife to him, which caused him not to be able to hear properly.

He could not digest such an unbelievable reality about the woman who was supposed to recuperate due to sickness but already left to pursue a danger in a place like West Lane Mountain in order to avoid him or return to Archess with him.

Remembering the story shared by the Terran soldiers in Seidel, Canillas quickened his pace, dashing toward the main door of the mansion that he had just passed many minutes ago.

He wondered if he had decided to give up on their marriage and gave no care about her whereabouts as he made up his mind to return to Archess without her, what would have happened to her.

Canillas let out a low chuckle at what he was doing at the moment while striding to get out of the mansion to pursue her. Why did he have to pursue a woman who seemed to ignore and resent him that much? Was it because he could not accept the way she treated him? Or was it because he found her intriguing?

She was indeed an intriguing, unpredictable, insane woman. But those adjectives seemed not enough to describe the whole of her enigma in his eyes.

No woman had been able to make a man like him have a headache and tense as he would not sacrifice his precious time to think about those trivial things.

But what was he doing now? Canillas was also confused, unable to find the right answer. For him to care for such a disrespectful woman was really beyond his common sense as well. Even at this moment, he did not recognize himself.

But why did she go to that mountain when she was not in good health? Had she recovered? And why did, among many places in this kingdom, she have to go there? Was it what was called coincidence? But why should there be this kind of absurd coincidence?

He did not know what to ask or comment anymore, as many unanswered questions had grown in his mind every time he wondered about her.

Besides, what was more important at the moment was to find her. Then, he would make her beg him for forgiveness for the punishment he would inflict on that stubborn, insane woman. And he would not care if that punishment would make her resent him more.

Canillas’ thought was suddenly directed to the young Captain he met in Seidel, which made him halt in his urgent track.

How if what had disturbed his mind since he met that young Captain was right? Did she resent him and be eager to end their marriage because of that man?
