Chapter 107: Melissa Gets Angry

Claire Ainsworth looked at Rachel Royce. "Miss Evelynn is here."

Her tone was that of the lady of the house.

Rachel Royce didn’t respond. She turned to look at Tristan Sterling. The man’s handsome face remained cold and grim, inscrutable in its depth.

She had no intention of greeting him.

Tristan Sterling just looked at her, not saying a word.

The atmosphere grew tense for a moment.

Apparently, Tristan Sterling still remembered the slap she had given him.

"Aunt Evelynn, we’re going to the stables to play today. I’ll show you my pony!"

Melissa’s voice rang out.

Rachel Royce froze for a second, lowering her gaze to look at Melissa.

Just then, the driver pulled up in the minivan and got out to open the door.

Melissa pulled Rachel Royce toward the vehicle. "Aunt Evelynn, let’s get in, quick."

Rachel Royce had no power to refuse. But that was fine. Going to the stables with Melissa was better than staying here.

Rachel Royce helped Melissa into the van, settled her into the child safety seat, and then got in herself, taking the spot next to Melissa.

At this point, she actually hoped Tristan Sterling and Claire Ainsworth would go off and enjoy their time together, leaving her to accompany Melissa.

Of course, that was clearly unrealistic.

"Daddy," Melissa urged, looking at her father.

At that moment, Lisa Lawson came out of the living room with Melissa’s things, which she handed to Tristan Sterling.

Tristan Sterling took the items and looked at Claire Ainsworth. "Get in."

As Claire Ainsworth was getting in, Melissa suddenly said, "Daddy, isn’t Uncle Suzanne supposed to go with us? Miss Claire can ride in Uncle Suzanne’s car."

Claire Ainsworth’s movement froze. She looked at Melissa Sterling, her lips curving into a smile as she said, "Miss Claire wants to be with Melissa."

Melissa replied, "Aunt Evelynn is here with me."

Rachel Royce could clearly see the smile crack on Claire Ainsworth’s face for an instant. Claire’s kindness toward Melissa was only superficial; deep down, she must have been full of hatred for the girl for a long time.

A smart child like Melissa could probably sense such false affection, which made Rachel Royce breathe a sigh of relief.

Sensing Rachel Royce’s gaze, their eyes met, and Claire Ainsworth failed to conceal the coldness in her own.

When Claire Ainsworth looked back at Tristan Sterling, the look in her eyes was one of unconcealable grievance.

Tristan Sterling took a step forward and said to Melissa, "Let Miss Claire get in first. Uncle Suzanne will meet us at the stables."

Melissa glanced back at Rachel Royce as if asking for her opinion. Rachel smiled and said, "Let’s let Miss Claire get in first."

Only then did Melissa say, "Okay, then." Looking at Claire Ainsworth, she added, "Miss Claire, you can come up now!"

Claire Ainsworth watched the two of them, perfectly in sync. They were the ones who looked like a family.

’I’ve really had enough of this little bitch, Melissa Sterling.’

’She’s clearly doing this on purpose to embarrass me.’

She didn’t get in the van. Instead, she faced Tristan Sterling with red-rimmed eyes and said in a choked voice, "Tristan, you all go on without me!"

With that, she turned and strode around the back of the van, heading for the gate.

Tristan Sterling placed the bag he was holding in the van and caught up to Claire Ainsworth in just a few steps. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Through the car window, Rachel Royce saw Tristan Sterling pull Claire Ainsworth into his arms. Claire struggled twice before finally leaning against the man’s shoulder, sobbing aggrievedly.

The man patted her on the shoulder, comforting her.

Melissa saw this scene through the window, and her pretty little face instantly soured. She unbuckled her seatbelt to get out, saying angrily to Rachel Royce, "Aunt Evelynn, we’re not going anymore."

Seeing Melissa get out, Rachel Royce had no choice but to follow.

"Young Miss."

Lisa Lawson called out, worried.

Tristan Sterling heard the cry and turned to look.

Melissa pulled Rachel Royce back to her bedroom and quickly locked the door.

Melissa’s bedroom was next to Tristan Sterling’s room. It was a pink princess room, its luxurious and expensive decor visible to the naked eye.

Melissa turned and took Rachel Royce’s hand, mumbling, "Aunt Evelynn, can we draw together?"

Rachel Royce said gently, "Melissa can do whatever she wants."

Melissa’s bedroom was connected to a separate art studio. It was clear that Melissa loved to draw. The room was spacious, with a floor-to-ceiling window that offered an unobstructed view of the beautiful summer scenery outside.

Outside the door, Tristan Sterling didn’t even try the doorknob, simply instructing Lisa Lawson to go get the key.

Inside, as Melissa was getting her paintbrushes, Rachel Royce saw a drawing pad on the table. The top drawing was of a beautiful, long-haired woman wearing a hat and a white dress, standing amidst a field of flowers. Only, the woman’s facial features hadn’t been drawn in.

Rachel Royce looked at the drawing and asked, "Melissa, who is this?"

Melissa walked over with her brushes and replied, "Melissa’s mommy."

Rachel Royce’s heart clenched. Suppressing the bitterness welling up inside her, she asked, "Then why didn’t you draw her face?"

Melissa answered honestly, "Because Melissa doesn’t know what Mommy looks like. I dream about Mommy, but I don’t remember when I wake up."

Her words were like sharp thorns stabbing into Rachel Royce’s heart.

Melissa tilted her little head up to look at Rachel Royce, blinking her big eyes. "Can I make her look like you, Aunt Evelynn?"

Rachel Royce knelt down, looked at Melissa, and asked, "Has Daddy ever mentioned Mommy to you?"

Melissa mumbled, "Daddy said Mommy went to a faraway place and can’t come back for now." Her voice held a hint of grievance.

The tip of Rachel Royce’s nose tingled, and she could barely suppress the emotions welling in her eyes. She asked again, "Then... does Melissa hate Mommy for not being by your side?"

Melissa shook her head. "Melissa would never hate Mommy. Nina and my big cousins’ mommies are all very nice, so Melissa’s mommy must be a very nice mommy, too. She just can’t be with me for now. I’ll be good and wait for Mommy to come back."

As Melissa spoke, her eyes suddenly reddened.

Rachel Royce couldn’t hold back any longer. She reached out, pulled Melissa into her arms, and took a deep breath as tears streamed uncontrollably from her eyes.

’My daughter really is the best child in the world. She doesn’t hate me.’

Held so tightly in the embrace, Melissa called out in confusion, "Aunt Evelynn?"

Rachel Royce didn’t answer, simply holding her daughter like this.

Melissa reached out and wrapped her arms around Rachel Royce’s neck.

In the doorway of the art studio, the man’s figure stood perfectly still.
