The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 117: Wipe That Smile Off His Face
Chapter 117: Wipe That Smile Off His Face
Lawyer Walsh said, "The court’s reason is that the defendant requested a postponement. No specific cause was given, and the delay is indefinite."
Rachel Royce’s grip on her phone tightened.
"Miss Royce, I suggest you try talking with Mr. Sterling first."
Lawyer Walsh could clearly sense the power of the other party’s backing. Filing this lawsuit would not be easy.
Rachel Royce said, "I understand."
She put down her phone.
Rachel Royce sat on the sofa in silence.
Then, she picked up her phone, found a number, and dialed it.
The phone rang twice before the call was abruptly disconnected.
Rachel Royce frowned.
Then she dialed David’s number.
Before she could say anything, David’s voice came through. "Hey, Evelynn, did you miss me?"
Rachel Royce got straight to the point. "David, do you know where Tristan Sterling is?"
David sighed in disappointment. "So you didn’t miss me after all! What do you need him for?"
Rachel Royce said, "I have some business with him."
"We’re at the pool hall right now, playing a few games! Want to come?"
Rachel Royce got up and left the room.
After asking a staff member for directions downstairs, she went to the pool hall.
She opened the door and went inside.
The vast, brightly lit pool hall was unusually quiet, filled only with the sound of colliding billiard balls.
Only Tristan Sterling, David, and a staff member were at the pool table.
The man was bent over the table, his posture accentuating an exceptional waist-to-hip ratio. He gripped the cue, his arm lean, powerful, and perfectly defined. His gaze was focused, radiating an air of poised readiness. With a forceful stroke, the balls collided, and five of them dropped into the pockets.
Watching him, David lamented, "You really don’t leave a single shot for me."
Tristan Sterling straightened up and said coolly, "I’ve never been one to leave an opening for others."
David chuckled, then turned to look at Rachel Royce, who had just entered. "Evelynn, you’re here! Quick, come help me win a game. This guy is just too arrogant."
Rachel Royce walked forward with a grim expression. Tristan Sterling was wiping his cue, and he didn’t spare her a single glance from start to finish.
The staff member re-racked the balls for the next game.
Rachel Royce stood opposite Tristan Sterling and said, "Tristan Sterling, we need to talk."
The man’s cold, dark gaze finally swept over her before he broke the rack. "There’s nothing for us to talk about."
Rachel Royce’s brow furrowed as she stared at him.
David glanced at Rachel Royce, then at Tristan Sterling. He sensed there was a problem between them, and it wasn’t just because of the conflict between her and Claire Ainsworth that night.
Tristan Sterling looked at David and urged, "Your turn."
David didn’t make a move. "Tristan, Evelynn has something to say to you."
Tristan Sterling said to David, "This is your last chance to turn the tables. Of course, you could just concede."
David chuckled. "With Evelynn here, I’m sure I can beat you."
With that, he looked at Rachel Royce and said, "Evelynn, once I beat this arrogant bastard, I’ll let you do whatever you want with him."
Rachel Royce reached out and took the cue from David’s hand. "No need. I’ll do it myself."
David said with a laugh, "Alright! Evelynn, you have to wipe that smile off his face."
Tristan Sterling stared at Rachel Royce.
Rachel Royce took the next shot.
Rachel Royce’s skill was clearly far superior to David’s. He praised her from the sidelines, "Evelynn won the Pan-American Championship two years in a row, you know. Tristan, it’s not too late to concede."
A slight smirk played on Tristan Sterling’s thin lips. "Is that so? Then I’d like to see for myself just how capable she really is."
Hearing the tone in his voice, Rachel Royce wanted nothing more than to shove a billiard ball down his throat.
The man’s gaze swept over her before he took his shot.
After three turns each,
they were perfectly evenly matched. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
David said proudly, "Tristan, don’t underestimate Evelynn."
Tristan Sterling’s expression remained unchanged, betraying no emotion.
Rachel Royce bent low over the table, her slender fingers resting in front of the cue ball. She then executed a jump shot, sinking a striped ball.
"Beautiful!"
David couldn’t help but cheer.
Tristan Sterling looked at Rachel Royce.
Rachel Royce lifted her gaze to meet his, her eyes cold as she said, "Your turn!"
Tristan Sterling averted his gaze and walked to the other side of the table.
This shot would decide the game.
As it turned out, the man sank both his designated object ball and the 8-ball.
David was indignant. "If you hadn’t broken first, Evelynn definitely would have won."
Throughout the entire game, Rachel Royce made no mistakes. Of course, neither did Tristan Sterling, and he clearly had no intention of yielding.
"Evelynn, want to play another round?" David asked.
Just then, Rachel Royce looked at Tristan Sterling.
Their eyes met, the man’s dark irises deep and inscrutable.
The air between them seemed to grow exceptionally cold and still.
Just as Rachel Royce was about to say something,
"Tristan!"
Claire Ainsworth’s voice rang out as she walked in with her friends.
The moment she saw Rachel Royce, her expression iced over. She clenched her fists and strode forward, looking as if she was about to slap her.
"Miss Ainsworth!" David’s voice rang out. "What do you think you’re doing?" His tone was laced with menace.
Claire Ainsworth froze in her tracks.
Rachel Royce said, "It’s fine. I’d like to see what she plans to do."
"Evelynn!" The man’s voice was as cold as ice.
Rachel Royce’s heart clenched. She turned her head to look at the man, his handsome face frigid.
"Do you really think you’re so capable you can do whatever you please?"
Before Rachel Royce could speak, David cut in. "Tristan, the conflict between Evelynn and your girlfriend is their business. If you bully Evelynn, I won’t stand for it."
Tristan Sterling looked at David, his handsome face cold and stern. "David, don’t get too invested."
David’s expression faltered.
Rachel Royce said, "Tristan Sterling, what exactly do you want?"
Tristan Sterling shot Rachel Royce a cold look, then walked straight to Claire Ainsworth’s side without a word. He wrapped an arm around her waist and said, "Let’s go."
Rachel Royce stood rooted to the spot, clenching her fists as she watched their retreating backs.
"Evelynn!" David called out worriedly.
At that moment, Rachel Royce’s phone vibrated.
It was a call from Julian Jennings.
"Professor!"
"Yes, I’m outside. I’ll be right over."
She hung up the phone.
Rachel Royce looked at David and said, "I have to go."
David asked, "Evelynn, do you and Tristan know each other too?"
A self-deprecating smile touched Rachel Royce’s lips. "He’s the husband I’m married to."
Long after Rachel Royce had left,
David remained standing there, unable to process what he had just heard.
Rachel Royce went back upstairs and met up with Julian Jennings. "Professor!"
"Where did you go?"
Rachel Royce replied, "I just went for a walk downstairs."
Julian Jennings just hummed in acknowledgment and didn’t press further. "Come on, let’s get some lunch."
Rachel Royce said, "Let’s have it sent up. I don’t feel like going downstairs again."
Julian Jennings replied, "Alright, I’ll have someone bring it up."
The two of them went into the living room of the suite.
Julian Jennings asked, "Did Lawyer Walsh call you?"
Rachel Royce hummed in response and told Julian Jennings what Lawyer Walsh had said.
It was just as they had expected.
"So what are you planning to do now?"
Her voice thick with exhaustion, Rachel Royce said, "I don’t know yet. I’ll figure it out after we get back to Kingsland tomorrow."
"Okay."
Soon, a staff member brought their lunch up.
The two of them talked about other things.
In the afternoon, he had a golf game scheduled with Hector Ainsworth and some other business tycoons.
"You should go. I’ll just stay in the room."
She didn’t feel like going anywhere right now.
"Alright then."
Rachel Royce spent the entire afternoon in her room, her mind a chaotic mess, unable to get anything done.
She took the initiative to contact Melissa.
Melissa was overjoyed to get her call. She had been out having fun but immediately returned to her car to talk with Rachel Royce.
Video-chatting with Melissa, Rachel Royce’s mood improved considerably.
