The Husband I Loved for Eight Years Never Loved Me-Chapter 97: Where Is Rachel Royce Now?
Chapter 97: Where is Rachel Royce Now?
「The next day.」
After an examination, the doctor cleared Rachel Royce for discharge. He reminded her to be mindful of her diet, told her the stitches on her forehead could be removed at the hospital in about five days, and urged her to get plenty of rest.
Before leaving the hospital, Rachel Royce went to see Marcus Sheldon.
He would need at least another ten days before he could be discharged.
Julian Jennings arranged for someone new to take care of him, while Miles Sheldon continued to stay with Rachel Royce.
Afterward, the group left the hospital.
Rachel Royce couldn’t return to Kingsland just yet.
There was still unfinished work at the branch office. For several consecutive years, the Athera branch had been experiencing financial problems, and its performance had declined severely.
To ensure there would be no issues with the upcoming Procare partnership, the branch office had to undergo a major "cleansing."
At yesterday’s meeting, Julian Jennings had directly dismissed Sean Palmer and a group of other high-level managers who were nothing more than deadwood, sending a wave of panic through the entire company.
Of course, there were also the long-suppressed employees who now felt like they had been given a new lease on life.
The next step was to promote qualified personnel to fill the vacancies.
Rachel Royce insisted on going to the office to handle this matter herself. She couldn’t let Julian Jennings, the big boss from the head office, handle everything. It felt like a waste of his talents.
Julian Jennings didn’t try to stop her, knowing she couldn’t sit still.
He couldn’t stay here for too long either. There was work waiting for him at the head office, and he had received an urgent call last night.
A very important project in Portington had run into trouble.
Julian Jennings had his suspicions about what was going on.
But he definitely couldn’t let Rachel Royce know about this.
That was why the matter with Victor Yates needed to be resolved as quickly as possible.
Last night, Thomas Sterling had hacked into Victor Yates’s phone and gotten what Julian Jennings wanted.
Julian Jennings had originally planned to deal with the matter today.
But somehow, Victor Yates got wind of it and fled during the night.
The police had already traced the assailant’s whereabouts and issued an online warrant for his arrest.
Julian Jennings asked Leo Howard to assist Rachel Royce in managing the branch office’s affairs.
Thomas Sterling was to stay here and accompany Rachel Royce back to Kingsland after she finished her work. What he’d told Tristan Sterling yesterday wasn’t entirely a lie; he did have a partner company in Athera. He had originally been scheduled to visit next week, so this just meant he was coming over to check on things a bit early.
"Well then, Thomas, take good care of Rachel."
Thomas Sterling said, "Don’t worry, Julian. I’ll definitely keep a good eye on her."
Rachel Royce interrupted, "Alright, you make it sound like I’m some kind of trouble magnet."
Thomas Sterling laughed. "Well, close enough. You just don’t know how to take care of yourself."
"Look who’s talking!"
"What do you mean, ’look who’s talking’? I eat when I’m hungry and sleep when I’m tired. I’m nothing like you."
Rachel Royce stared at him and gave him a light kick. "You’re not going to let it go, are you!"
"..."
Julian Jennings watched the two of them bickering.
"Alright, I’m heading out then." He looked at Rachel Royce. "Call me if you need anything."
Rachel Royce hummed in agreement. "I know. Be careful on the road, Professor."
"Mm."
Julian Jennings got into the car, and the vehicle slowly drove away.
Thomas Sterling sighed dramatically. "You’re so sweet and gentle with your professor, but you only ever get mad at me."
Rachel Royce immediately reached out and grabbed his ear. "I think you’re really asking for it, aren’t you?"
Thomas Sterling’s brows furrowed as he quickly begged for mercy. "Okay, you win! I was wrong, I was wrong! Ow, ow, ow, let go."
Inside the departing black sedan.
Julian Jennings watched the playful pair in his rearview mirror before silently looking away.
「Before leaving Athera.」
Julian Jennings arranged to meet with Tristan Sterling.
It was mainly because of the situation between Victor Yates and Dylan Young.
This time, even with Victor Yates’s help, Dylan Young had failed to secure the partnership and had nearly been outplayed himself.
He had indeed underestimated his opponent. Victor Yates had also constantly disparaged Evelynn, leading him to truly believe she was all show and no substance.
This wasn’t just about his own reputation.
One could only imagine Tristan Sterling’s mood.
When Dylan Young met with Tristan Sterling that night, he had already braced himself for the worst. He was sent back to Kingsland overnight; his punishment would be decided once Tristan Sterling returned.
The two of them agreed to meet at Tristan Sterling’s hotel.
When Julian Jennings arrived, Tristan Sterling was already waiting for him.
Melissa was there too.
Perhaps because she had spent so much time at the hospital, Melissa had woken up this morning with a cold and a low-grade fever.
Now, she was listlessly leaning against her father’s chest. She looked so docile and fragile that it tugged at one’s heartstrings.
When Melissa was sick, she was even more inseparable from Tristan Sterling.
So, Tristan Sterling had brought Melissa with him.
Seeing Julian Jennings, Melissa called out weakly, "Mr. Jennings."
Julian Jennings hummed in acknowledgment and asked Tristan Sterling, "What’s wrong with Melissa?"
Tristan Sterling replied, "She has a bit of a cold and a fever."
Melissa looked at Julian Jennings and asked, "Mr. Jennings, when will Aunt Evelynn get better?"
Julian Jennings smiled gently. "When Melissa gets better, Aunt Evelynn will be all better too."
Melissa murmured softly, "Then Melissa needs to get better quickly."
"That’s right. Melissa needs to get better soon."
Tristan Sterling coaxed Melissa, saying, "Go to sleep now, Melissa!"
Julian Jennings decided to wait outside until Tristan Sterling had coaxed Melissa to sleep.
「Over ten minutes later.」
Melissa finally fell asleep in Tristan Sterling’s arms.
But he kept holding her, as Melissa would cry inconsolably if she woke up and didn’t see him.
Julian Jennings re-entered the room and said in a low voice, "President Sterling, you need to take care of Melissa. We can talk another time."
Cradling Melissa with one arm, Tristan Sterling used his other hand to pick up a cup from the coffee table and take a sip of tea. "Since you’re here, let’s talk."
Julian Jennings said no more and sat down across from the man.
"You want to talk about Dylan Young," Tristan Sterling stated.
Julian Jennings said, "I’m sure President Sterling is already well aware of the situation with Dylan Young and Victor Yates. Evelynn’s car accident is inextricably linked to Victor Yates, isn’t it?"
He deliberately kept his voice low.
Tristan Sterling looked at Julian Jennings, his dark eyes profound, and said unhurriedly, "And President Jennings thinks this matter is also related to Dylan Young."
"We’ll know whether he’s involved or not after an investigation. If he is, I hope President Sterling will handle it impartially. But regardless, Dylan Young’s malicious business practices deserve due punishment."
Tristan Sterling’s lips curled into a cold smirk. "So, President Jennings wants to punish my subordinate. This Miss Evelynn must be quite important to you." He continued, "However, I’ve heard that Miss Evelynn is married, and you don’t look like her husband. So what, then, is the calm and composed President Jennings to her?"
His words were laced with sarcasm. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Julian Jennings’s handsome face remained impassive. He said coolly, "Our relationship is no concern of President Sterling’s. But I will be seeing the matter of her car accident through to the end."
Tristan Sterling scoffed, his eyes filled with coldness. "Fine. I understand what President Jennings means."
The atmosphere instantly grew frigid.
Julian Jennings stood up. "Then I won’t disturb you any longer, President Sterling."
As he turned to leave, he heard Tristan Sterling ask, "Does President Jennings happen to know where Rachel Royce is right now?"
Julian Jennings froze and turned back to look at Tristan Sterling. "So, President Sterling still remembers Rachel. I thought after five years, you would have long forgotten she even existed."
Tristan Sterling looked up, his deep eyes holding a dark, frigid glint devoid of any warmth. He met Julian Jennings’s gaze without a word.
Julian Jennings simply said, "She’s still in the United States." With that, he said no more and strode out the door.
Tristan Sterling withdrew his gaze and let out a cold laugh.
