The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 123: Feigning Frailty
I stood behind them, taking in everything that happened. Traveling with a strong team like this, at least we don’t have to worry about ending up alone.
Otherwise, what would be the point of coming here? We’re not a professional funeral procession.
However, speaking of which, teams that have accompanied us often end up completely wiped out or barely surviving. The mortality rate is extraordinarily high.
"Scared?" A sudden voice interrupted my thoughts.
I turned my head to find that it was ’Junior Brother Sha’ from Meng Qingyu’s team talking to me.
This person’s surname was Sha, and he was carrying three backpacks by himself, like a human luggage cart.
Professor Liu’s two students didn’t have backpacks, so the ones he was carrying on his arms must belong to them.
This person wasn’t tall, but he was strong. The backpack on his back was almost as tall as he was, and with two large backpacks in hand, he walked briskly without breaking a sweat.
"Yeah, very scary." I replied perfunctorily.
"Don’t be afraid, everyone in our team is skilled. I’ll protect you." The man beamed a sleazy smile.
"Brother?" The term stirred a little imagination for me, having stayed in the tomb for thousands of years. For a living person to dare call himself my brother, he must be either a turtle or a tortoise.
"Hey! Sis, your brother is right beside you. If there’s danger, hide behind me."
"Oh, okay." Seeing his sincere demeanor, I decided to give him a chance to prove himself.
Unexpectedly, that opportunity came quickly. As we approached the swamp, a human head flew over mid-air.
The leader, Yidao, sliced the head open, and a bunch of worm-like things fell out.
The mountain knife in his hand was clearly not an ordinary object. Human skulls are very hard, yet he sliced it like tofu, splitting the head in two.
Then dozens of water barrel-thick giant worms emerged from the swamp. Whether they’re actually worms is uncertain, as they merely resemble them. The difference is that their heads have big mouths, capable of swallowing a person whole.
Dozens of big mouths foraging among the trees, and seeing my chance to shine, when the people in front dodged, and ten or so giant worms charged at me, I swiftly dodged behind Junior Brother Sha. He was caught off guard and used the backpacks in his hands to shield himself, resulting in the backpacks and half his arm being bitten.
Someone fired a gun, bullets tearing the worm’s flesh apart, but it still wouldn’t let go of Junior Brother Sha.
Junior Brother Sha let out an extraordinarily tragic scream and was dragged forward, kneeling and being pulled towards the swamp.
Dozens of worms danced like a frenzy of snakes. There were only about ten of us on this side, including one who was asleep.
Bi Shi jumped onto a big tree with He Su on his back. I noticed that the worms wouldn’t attack me, but to avoid standing out, I rolled into the bushes and hid myself with plant leaves.
Chen Qinghan had set me up as a newlywed delicate wife. How could I not act frail after all the brain cells he expended making up lies?
Meng Qingyu had a similar persona, so when the worms attacked, she wanted to hide behind Chen Qinghan, but he turned and dashed forward, confronting the giant worms head-on.
She had to settle for second best and hid next to that strong man. Besides Chen Qinghan, everyone else was retreating while fighting.
Chen Qinghan moved like the wind. He didn’t hack at the worms but instead dodged their attacks and dashed towards their rear.
He practically proved that the giant worms ignored this elusive fish.
He was safer acting alone; pairing with someone might get him accidentally eaten.
Squatting in the bushes, I suddenly remembered what Big Beard said. When the three of us came in before, neither the cannibal tree nor the giant worms attacked us.
Initially, I thought they hadn’t discovered us, but now it seems not. This team moved lightly and carefully, without disturbing anything.
So the problem lies with the three of us. But we can’t let Meng Qingyu’s side know this, so we discreetly disguised ourselves, with Chen Qinghan being the boldest; he jumped into the swamp.
The people Meng Qingyu brought were indeed skilled; after a brief chaos, they quickly organized an attack.
With knives and guns at the ready, they chopped all the giant worms. The worms were severely injured but didn’t give up. It was a worm with perseverance. It stood up from the swamp.
I grabbed the grass in front of me, covering half my face while peeking at the behemoth.
Anyone who’s had skewers knows what this creature looks like: an inverted osmanthus sausage covered in mud, like extra sesame paste.
Once exposed, the individuals on Meng Qingyu’s side finally had a target to attack. Bullets rained out from the guns, slicing that thing open with a bullet blade.
The thing was massive, and as it died, it swung out remnants, splattering swamp mud everywhere and toppling small trees.
But it was ultimately no match for modern hot weapons, a dense and well-coordinated group attack. It fell into the swamp in a tragic stance, returning from where it came.
I quickly ran out of the bushes, shouting Chen Qinghan’s name, and small-stepped backward to the swamp’s edge to pull him out of the mud.
He must have timed it, as by the end of the fight, he was only half-submerged.
Bi Shi jumped down from the tree with He Su on his back. Even if others noticed her nimble moves, they couldn’t blame her for standing by earlier. After all, she carried a patient, also protecting others.
When the battle was over and we counted the injured, there was only one: Junior Brother Sha.
The giant worm’s mouth contained corrosive liquid, but fortunately, it wasn’t fast-acting. Junior Brother Sha’s hand wasn’t too damaged, though the sharp teeth left bloody holes all over his arms.
Zhou, the team’s medic, treated and bandaged his wounds. The backpacks of Professor Liu’s two students were still in the worm’s mouth, and they vomited by the severed worm head for a long time until Professor Liu personally retrieved their backpacks.
The backpacks were covered in slime. They found a small stream nearby to rinse them repeatedly.
Luckily, the backpacks were waterproof. Once they were clean, we continued, with Junior Brother Sha’s forearms wrapped in thick bandages, and the two scholars now carrying their own backpacks.
I initially wondered why Junior Brother Sha was carrying their backpacks. After the battle, I understood that these two were unskilled. If they had to carry large packs, in case of danger, others just needed to run faster than them to survive.
The slow-moving duo was clearly aware of this. After strapping on their backpacks, they became much more vigilant, no longer treating this journey like a leisurely hike. Instead, they carefully stayed in the middle of the team, not daring to be distracted by the surrounding scenery.
