Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Grafting Isn’t Always a Good Thing

The three of them, led by Qinghan, were relatively lucky. This city is like playing a huge adventure game; you never know if the next step will land you in a prison or a river.

After they entered the city, fortunately, they did not alarm more formidable creatures; they were only bitten by harmless but poisonous bats, causing them to be unconscious for a few hours, but it was not fatal.

If they had encountered those things outside, survival would not have been so easy.

Now I understand why Beauty Snake said it’s safe to hide here; those creatures that hunt by sight can’t find us as long as we stay inside the buildings.

And those that hunt by smell are fooled by the overwhelming odor of bat guano here, which completely masks our scent.

Unless they can fly, ground creatures can’t catch flying bats, plus the blood-sucking bats are so small that even if they catch one, it’s barely worth eating, so the creatures outside aren’t interested.

I ’heard’ them being picky, and when they passed the entrance of the small building, they all scoffed and said, ’Not even two ounces of meat.’

Of course, this is what I ’inferred’, but their actual thoughts were probably along those lines.

If they hadn’t found the bats worthless, Beauty Snake probably wouldn’t have survived till now.

After the monster’s wild celebration hour, the clock’s hand was already pointing to one o’clock in the morning, and the streets were gradually quieting down.

Beauty Snake seemed to know this would happen; she silently yawned and went to the back to sleep.

It wasn’t because she had a big heart but because she could see that if I wanted to kill her, it would be as easy as flipping a palm. If I wanted to torture her or force her to confess, I wouldn’t have untied her.

My attitude determined hers; since I had no malice towards her, she no longer guarded against me.

As for what happened to their group, the person most wanting to know would be Meng Qingyu, then Professor Liu.

If Professor Liu wants to know something, he’ll ask after he’s awake; I’ve already asked what I wanted to know.

In the latter half of the night, Qinghan and the others gradually awoke, and I covered their mouths to prevent them from making noise.

Although there were fewer living creatures on the street, there were still small groups wandering around.

Alerting one equals alerting them all. I made gestures and exaggerated expressions until Qinghan understood what I meant.

The small building was filled with bat droppings, and the smell was quite pungent, but ironically, it was our umbrella of protection.

As dawn approached, I stretched my limbs, thinking that the creatures outside would soon retreat to their lairs, meaning it was finally our time to move.

But just as I was about to let my guard down, gunshots suddenly rang out outside!

The windows of the small building didn’t have glass, which was why Beauty Snake warned us not to make a sound.

Without windows, there was no sound isolation; whatever noise occurred inside could be heard outside.

Conversely, whatever noise happened outside could be heard inside as well.

The bats should have returned to their nests at night but had not come back for a long time.

Beauty Snake quickly strode out from the back, gesturing towards me, while Qinghan and the others peeked from behind the statue of the goddess.

The creatures wandering on the street flocked towards the direction of the gunfire immediately.

If they were regular beasts, they’d flee upon hearing gunfire, but the creatures on the street seemed to know that where there were gunshots, there was ’food.’

It’s not surprising; many treasure seekers have landed on the island before. They also visited White Jade City, and when attacked, they must have fired shots.

Over time, the creatures outside figured out that this noise signaled a ’gourmet feast’, forming a conditioned reflex.

The gunfire drew away the creatures outside, but we weren’t relieved because there was no one else in this area. The one firing the gun must be either Old Shi’s group or Meng Qingyu’s group.

Helping them became inevitable, as Professor Liu was worried about the safety of Guan Hai and Cong Zhibo. Asking him to stay inside the building and wait for the outcome was impossible.

They had been awake for a few hours, and the residual toxins in their bodies had mostly metabolized, restoring their physical flexibility, making it feasible for them to join the fight.

The issue was that the creatures outside couldn’t be dealt with solely by relying on physical agility. The gunfire outside the city grew more intense; they were moving into the city.

Perhaps they intended to find a building in the city as a cover, given that the terrain outside was open, making it easy for them to be attacked from both sides.

But the creatures from inside were running out, as Professor Liu stepped out of the small building and shouted at the top of his lungs, ’It’s dangerous inside the city, don’t come in.’

He shouted in a foreign language to ensure that both Meng Qingyu and Old Shi’s people could understand.

Concern leads to chaos, and this saying couldn’t be more accurate. While Professor Liu was skilled and in good shape, he was too prone to emotional decisions.

It’s human nature and unavoidable. By shouting at the top of his lungs, he ended up calling back the creatures that hadn’t run far.

Seeing the creatures returning, Professor Liu couldn’t help but show a terrified expression.

In the forest, we had only encountered small creatures; while the flying ants and rats were formidable, they were still creatures we typically encountered.

But the creatures in the city had entirely transcended our understanding, with crocodiles possessing fish heads, black bears sporting bird beaks, and many-headed, multi-armed malformed monsters whose names we couldn’t even guess.

Seeing these things, I have reason to believe that the inhabitants of White Jade City might have conducted genetic experiments.

How else could such bizarre creatures have been grafted?

’There’s meat’ ’That one tastes good’ ’Don’t take it away from me’

Their attention was entirely on Professor Liu and Lu Xiaodao, while Qinghan seemed like trash food they didn’t care for.

To them, I’m not even considered food, being something inedible.

Though knowing they wouldn’t attack me and that I could save some effort, with Professor Liu and Lu Xiaodao becoming the focus of the beasts’ attack, Qinghan naturally would not stand by and watch, and I had to lend a hand, didn’t I?

I’m not fond of close combat, especially with monsters, as getting covered in blood is hard to clean. But the Dao borrowed from Lu Xiaodao was about the size of a nail clipper in front of these creatures, so without engaging in close combat, I couldn’t even touch their fur.

Thus, the following scene unfolded, as the bird-beaked bear that Professor Liu couldn’t take down with one, two, or three shots was about to pounce on him, I leaped onto its back to give it a massage.

And when he once again fell into the clutches of the three-headed, six-armed monster, I jumped over to crack the monster’s skull one by one.

For a full twenty minutes, we essentially repeated the action sequence of Professor Liu getting attacked, him counterattacking, counterattacks being ineffective, him getting caught, and me rushing in to KO the monster.

By now, Professor Liu should realize that these monsters have thick skin, and even if shot twice, even wounded with one eye and one ear, it wouldn’t diminish their combat effectiveness.

Fortunately, the small Dao Lu Xiaodao wielded could peel skin and pierce bones as effortlessly as slicing tofu.

As a result, the combat situation on Lu Xiaodao and Qinghan’s side was significantly better than ours.

Their weapons—the sword and Dao—were once-in-a-million Divine Artifacts, more effective than bullets.

Of course, this was largely due to their ghost-like speed.

As long as you can move faster than the monsters, with Divine Weaponry, those monsters can only end up being gutted.
