The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 148: While She’s Away
Professor Liu and Lu Xiaodao returned wearing Beast Clothes, and on the way, they conveniently dealt with the monster I had burned badly.
Now the city had fallen into complete silence, and Qinghan also put on a Beast Costume. Wearing it was like donning a spacesuit, making their movements awkward.
But simple actions could still be done, so while I stealthily killed monsters, they helped drag the corpses away.
Together, we cleared a passage, then Qinghan stood by the window and whistled twice.
The people inside heard us just outside the window, gently moved the water jar blocking the window, and I handed the Beast Costume inside to prevent their human scent from waking the sleeping monsters.
The people inside put it on, coming out one by one, because the passage was too narrow for two people to walk side by side.
If during this process any monsters were startled by the noise they made, opening their eyes, they would see a headless beast hanging on the window.
They would just think someone’s head was stuck in the water jar blocking the window and wouldn’t pay attention, continuing to sleep.
Others still in the ’passage’ would immediately fall down, lying in a straight line, avoiding touching the monsters on either side as much as possible.
Once everyone was out, Professor Liu suggested returning to the Goddess Temple, as a group of bats had flown over our heads during the fight.
They seemed to have a don’t-bother-each-other relationship with the city’s monsters, as no blood-sucking bats would be around if monsters surrounded the house.
They probably returned to their lair to sleep. I voiced my objection, expressing that since bats and monsters wouldn’t disturb each other, wearing Beast Clothes might alarm the bats when they returned.
Right now, they only carried the monster’s scent, with the strong, pungent smell of monster blood, and the bats in the Goddess Temple probably weren’t blind and hadn’t lost their sense of smell.
Professor Liu agreed with my reasoning and proposed finding an empty house to stay in. The people hiding in that house were indeed Meng Qingyu’s team and Old Shi’s team.
However, on Old Shi’s side, only Old Shi was left, alone and somewhat wooden, likely due to being too shocked.
Outside, they didn’t dare stick their heads out; it was only after entering the house that they stuck their heads out from the Beast Clothes.
But their heads and faces were covered with the monster’s blood and scent, which was likely safe.
Due to the inconvenience of moving in Beast Clothes, they left their guns and backpacks inside the house.
In fact, they were already out of ammunition, and the backpacks were practically empty. Entering White Jade City was a point of no return.
If no way to survive was found, they would become lone spirits here, just like the previous teams.
"Let’s go see that place while they’re asleep," Meng Qingyu said after resting for a while, addressing Beauty Snake.
It seemed they had ’recognized’ each other in that house, and Beauty Snake stood up, saying to the others: "Whoever still doesn’t believe can come along."
If they were talking about the treasure, then she was specifically addressing Old Shi with those words.
Because the others came to find the ’key’ for Meng Qingyu, their desire for treasure was not as strong as their desire for the antidote.
Sure enough, Old Shi stood up, "I must see it with my own eyes!"
With no teammates surviving, having paid such a heavy price, he couldn’t be at ease without seeing whether there was a treasure.
None from Meng Qingyu’s team moved. They stayed as still as meditating monks, neither speaking nor moving. Meng Qingyu didn’t force them to go along, and the three of them went out together.
After their footsteps faded, Lu Xiaodao suddenly opened his tightly shut eyes and told his companions he had found the antidote.
Professor Liu confirmed beside him, saying that Lu Xiaodao indeed found the antidote and risked his life to test it.
"And what about us now?" Zhou, who had several minor injuries but none serious, immediately perked up at the mention of an antidote.
As he spoke, he glanced at the leader, clearly seeking his opinion.
Guan Hai and Cong Zhibo also looked at the leader. Their gaze at the leader shifted from indifferent to resolute trust.
I guess after we parted ways, they encountered many dangers. The leader never abandoned them, or else these two would not have survived until now.
Old Shi’s men were all dead, and while they weren’t as skilled as Qinghan and Lu Xiaodao, they were armed and strong, so there was no reason they should have died before two unarmed students.
From their current attitude towards the leader, we could guess what they had experienced.
Such complete trust is rare among those with shallow relationships unless they have gone through life-and-death trials together.
The leader thought for a moment and said, "Not everyone can go; she might have a backup plan."
Lu Xiaodao said, "I’ll go alone."
If only one person left, Meng Qingyu might not suspect. Then, as long as he said he went out for a break and didn’t return for a long time, they could symbolically go out to search. If they couldn’t find him, they’d suggest he might have run into a monster. Meng Qingyu wouldn’t care about losing one person.
But the leader was uneasy about Lu Xiaodao going alone. If something happened to him, there’d be no one to report back.
The jungle was full of dangers, and moving alone was akin to suicide.
Qinghan looked at me, asking with his eyes if I was willing to go with Lu Xiaodao.
Meng Qingyu was most annoyed with me, and if I got lost, she’d be happy and wouldn’t look for me.
Everyone in the room had reached their physical limits, and once seated, it was hard to get up again. If they didn’t rest properly before going out, it would be a death sentence.
I nodded, agreeing to return to the jungle with Lu Xiaodao. Lu Xiaodao wore the Beast Clothes, and his weapons were still those sharp little blades that sliced through iron like mud.
As long as he didn’t drop his knives, he would never run out of ’ammunition.’
The two of us left the city, avoiding the sleeping monsters, and followed the stone path back to the location of the ’Gate of Lost.’
On the way, we saw some bloodied corpses, some drained by bats, others torn apart by monsters, leaving only bones.
Some monsters were brain eaters. Seeing these scenes, Lu Xiaodao averted his gaze and strode forward.
Meng Qingyu’s team had also lost a few people, which Lu Xiaodao should have recognized, so he couldn’t bear to look directly.
The first to discover them were the blood-sucking bats, with many bat corpses on the ground, most of them burned.
When Old Shi and his men arrived, they probably had torches. I carefully looked through the surrounding grass and saw two burnt-out thick branches with their tips burned.
Near the branches were many bat corpses. This seemed somewhat unbelievable, but it wasn’t impossible. The bat swarm, realizing the torches could harm them, sacrificed some bats to extinguish the fires.
For some creatures, sacrificing part of their kind for the group’s benefit is not uncommon, especially among insects.
They ran into blood-sucking bats out for food after entering the Gate of Lost, and someone fired a gun, alerting other monsters.
Outside the Gate of Lost, there were no signs of struggle, no extra footprints, only those left when we arrived.
