Chapter 164: Chapter 164: Worth Owning, Never Wears Out

The people who managed to escape left by boat, but the last boat was already out of space, and due to the urgency, someone decided to seal the passage door from the outside.

It must be said, the timing was just right. The people in those passages didn’t even have the chance to turn around and seek other escape methods as the scythe of death swiftly swept through, claiming numerous lives.

When we came out, I glanced over casually; the passage door on this side was only secured with a common latch-type bar, which allowed Bi Shi to crash out.

Similarly, as for locking the door, I felt that the people here were not worried about those inside breaking out; perhaps they didn’t want other things getting in.

"What are you thinking about? Missing home?" Bi Shi asked abruptly.

"No, I was thinking... sci-fi movies."

"Oh? What movie, is it good?"

"Just a story about an invasion by shapeless aliens."

"Not invading the land, only the underwater?"

"That’s possible. Maybe when Undersea City existed, there weren’t cities on land yet. Would you go into the forest and steal monkeys’ fruits?"

"I would catch the monkeys, send them to the zoo, and transplant the fruit trees to my home."

"Very nice, the dynasty has changed, but your nature remains unchanged."

After saying that, a strange feeling swept across my heart as if this conversation had happened before.

But I had decided not to dwell on the past, so I didn’t delve into it, letting the familiarity brush past me.

"The purpose of war is profit. Undersea City has so many good things, who wouldn’t want them?" Bi Shi sighed, heading towards a small cabin like a toll booth at the bridge.

There was no water under the bridge, only a bottomless abyss; on either side were towering cliffs, and overhead was pitch black. We must be inside the underbelly of the sea mountains.

This place is much like the Underworld on land, cold, dark, and silent, but more prone to despair since above these mountains lies the weight of the sea.

Luckily, only Bi Shi and I came in, imprisoned in our respective tombs for a millennium; this environment doesn’t feel uncomfortable to us at all.

"The items on the table aren’t disturbed, the chair fell, but nothing else is damaged." Bi Shi analyzed calmly, tapping her forehead with her forefinger. If she had a pipe in her mouth, she’d have quite the detective air.

"Inside they turned into mummies, while outside not a trace of bones..." she continued tapping her forehead, almost playing a drama queen.

"Dear guest, please stop your performance, hurry up, there’s still a long way ahead." I took my chance to overtake her and walked to the front.

The glowing building we saw opposite the bridge was merely the checkpoint at the bridgehead, along with structures akin to stores and gas stations.

Yet along the path beneath our feet, ahead lies a luminous city, but from our current position, only the spires of the buildings are visible.

I walked briskly towards the city, looking around hopefully for a river or drainage ditch as I went.

But unfortunately, there was nothing but rocks and fungal jungles; some mushrooms were taller than a person, even some slender fungi as tall as coconut trees.

There were also shorter ones, crowded together like grass, among which occasionally a few types of glowing mushrooms, flickering softly in either purple or green light.

Their patterns were luminescent, with designs shaped like flowers, circles, and even resembling eyes.

"Hey, there seems to be something alive in the mushroom cluster." Bi Shi fell behind me, probably by about ten meters.

"Hurry up, this place hasn’t seen humans for a long time. You know what thrives in the absence of life."

"With you here, fear a P?"

Alright, I do receive some ’signals,’ and they’re somewhat friendly to us.

On the road leading to the city, there were unauthorized vehicles parked everywhere, like toys maliciously thrown by children, evidently abandoned haphazardly by the Undersea People in panic.

If everyone in the city died all at once, then where are the bodies? Why are only the bodies in the passage preserved?

"Shh, listen!" I stopped Bi Shi from speaking further, pausing to listen closely.

Bi Shi stopped too, listening quietly, then shrugged indifferently, "It’s a music box, not an earthquake or avalanche, what’s the fuss!"

She thought I was making mountains out of molehills, but as far as I know, music boxes can’t turn continuously; they need winding unless equipped with perpetual motion mechanisms. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Even if it could operate for tens of thousands of years, the parts would have worn out long ago. Perpetual motion technology plus wear-proof materials, this music box could fetch a hefty price if taken out!

The sound of the music box was coming from the direction of the city, and I quickened my pace towards the city.

"Hey, you were just being all nervous, now you’re rushing over. Are you mad?"

I ignored Bi Shi, sprinting ahead with my water jug clanging noisily, creating a pure metal wind melody echoing with the music box.

On the road and inside passing cars, there were no skeletons to be seen. They’re unlikely to have been buried by sand and wind, as the roads, vehicles, and private items scattered on the ground were dust-free. This city remains spotless, so the skeletons couldn’t dig pits and bury themselves, their disappearance must have another reason.

Since transportation here mostly relies on walking, by the time I reached the city, an hour had passed.

The music box’s sound was odd; from the moment I heard it, its volume didn’t change. An hour ago, it was just as loud as an hour later when I stood on the edge of the city.

Following the sound, I stepped into the urban area. The situation here was more chaotic, objects leaning and falling all around, vehicles colliding with roadside buildings or other cars, creating a scene of chain-reaction crashes.

The street was littered with odd shoes, unsure if they were dropped while fleeing or knocked off.

Though these objects reveal some distinctions between the tools and items used by the Undersea People and modern humans, their panic and chaos at the time were no different from ordinary humans.

They may have screamed, calling out for scattered relatives, trying to find their cars, only to have someone threaten them with force and seize the vehicle.

The streets show clearly they were far from ’orderly’ during evacuation. I found a jellyfish hairpin made of pearls by a car crashed into a wall.

Every pearl was as big as a blueberry; I quickly pocketed the hairpin within my inner pocket to avoid Bi Shi snatching it.

Suddenly, the idea of leaving fell away. There are so many things to pick up here!

"What are you doing? What’s inside that car?" Bi Shi came over, seeing me zoning out in front of a nautilus car, and asked.

"Nothing." I adjusted my excited mood and replied in a calm tone.

"Quickly receive the signal, check if there are any living things here."

"Is... something snoring?!"

Afraid Bi Shi would ask more about the car, I hurried to ’listen’ for the sounds around, and indeed heard a thick, long—snore!
