Chapter 215: Chapter 216: Reunited

The creatures that emerged to attack the camp tonight were all ’ordinary’ animals from the jungle; what Captain Jack said wasn’t entirely false.

Those bizarre-looking creatures, including the Centipede Woman, were not involved in this attack—I did not see them.

We moved in the opposite direction to the animals heading toward the beach. On both sides of the road, there were makeshift streetlights installed by the ’welders.’ The light wasn’t bright, only illuminating the stone-paved path, but for us, it was good enough.

We retreated all the way to White Jade City and found that Qinghan was waiting for us under the Gate of Lost, with the Mummy Driver tucked under his arm; clearly, he had the same idea as I did.

"Professor Chen?!" Guan Hai exclaimed with delight upon seeing Qinghan.

"You guys didn’t really think I was dead, did you?" Qinghan joked.

"Of course not, once we heard Fu crying, we knew for sure you were fine," Guan Hai replied with a smile.

"Exactly, when I saw her faint from grief, it set my mind at ease," the team leader added.

"Huh? Are you insulting my acting skills?"

"I think... they’re impugning your character," Qinghan approached and asked if anyone was hurt.

I was too preoccupied with wondering about my own character to respond, but the team leader answered him, saying no one was injured, and credited Bi Shi and myself for helping them escape the camp.

"There’s nobody, no animals in the city right now, so it’s temporarily safe. Let’s move into the city first," Qinghan said as he walked, recounting to us what had happened in White Jade City earlier.

He suspected that the attack on White Jade City and the camp by the animals was controlled by some powerful force.

When we arrived a few days ago, we only traversed the closest and safest routes, leaving too many unexplored areas—nobody could say for sure what might be hidden there.

The animals that attacked the personnel guarding White Jade City retreated after succeeding, joining the larger assault on the beach camp.

Qinghan had hidden outside the city and witnessed the whole process. He mentioned that it could be explained if an animal attacked humans because its leader sought revenge on the invaders, but for animals to cooperate without distinction and attack humans as one united force was unheard of. The anomaly hidden beneath such unusual behavior could be an unimaginable mysterious force.

I said, regardless of everything else, we should first get the team leader and Guan Hai to a safe place. There were injured members in the group needing immediate evacuation.

Nobody knew how long the animals would remain crazed; after they finished off the Shield members, we might very well be their next target.

I shared my previous plan, which Qinghan considered feasible. He handed the solar-powered watch to the team leader, mentioning it was waterproof, shockproof, and radiation-proof—as long as it didn’t fall into magma, it wouldn’t malfunction.

Originally, he intended for headquarters to dispatch someone to meet with us on the island, but the situation had deteriorated, rendering the island unsuitable for a rendezvous point.

With the heavily armed ’welders’ suffering heavy losses, any reinforcement from headquarters would only add to the casualties.

I gave the Water Sphere to the team leader, even though they hadn’t seen it before, its functionality in aiding survival was undiminished.

"It can understand our speech. If you disable the autopilot and the Shell Ship stops at a depth beyond reach, give it the watch and let it ascend to the surface to send a signal."

Controlling the Water Sphere was fairly straightforward. The team leader watched as I held it aloft with both hands, presenting it to him.

Seeing it with his eyes was impossible, so he extended his hand towards where I held the ’air’ before him.

"Huh?" As his hand touched the Water Sphere, an astonished sound escaped his throat.

Whether or not the Water Sphere could be touched was up to its own will; when we first emerged from the Undersea City with it, I couldn’t touch it at all.

Eventually, it might have gotten familiar or trusted me, and then it allowed me to touch it.

"What is this?" The team leader cradled it as if holding something fragile, unsure whether to apply force or prevent it from falling, his expression conflicted.

"Water Sphere, it’s alive," I explained simply, not giving the team leader a clear understanding of what he held. He still frowned, unsure of where to place the Water Sphere.

The Water Sphere slipped from his hand and leapt onto him, apparently climbing onto his neck and gripping a tuft of his short hair.

Because I saw a tuft of his hair suddenly stand up, reminiscent of an anime character’s hair tuft.

"Don’t be so cautious; it’s incredibly durable—even the microwave gun couldn’t harm it," I said, causing Bi Shi to raise an eyebrow, while Guan Hai and Zhou looked utterly shocked.

They had witnessed the microwave gun’s power—it shattered trees, broke stones; over these few days, they had even discussed its principles.

So upon discovering that the weapon they regarded as formidable couldn’t even burst a Water Sphere, I could practically see the solid ’question marks’ forming over their heads.

"I’ll take good care of it," the team leader remarked without removing the Water Sphere from his neck, allowing it to ’lord over’ him and refraining from stopping it from tugging at his hair. His rough hand gently held a foot hanging by his chest, eliciting a series of giggles from it.

Seeing them get along reassured me, and we entered the underground tunnel with ease. Nearby the entrance were some devices set by the ’welders;’ upon descending, a few black boxes with tablet-like devices on them were found inside the secret chamber.

"This is a ground-penetrating imager," Guan Hai recognized the name of the tool next to the box wrapped with wires right away.

"Who on earth are these people? They seem to have whatever they want," Zhou marveled.

It hadn’t occurred to me until he mentioned it. We had been working together for some time, but hadn’t discussed the ’Shield’ problem.

The camp had been full of surveillance and listening devices; we barely spoke, fearing the white-coats would discern something from our conversations.

Even though our actions and speech were presently unrestricted, as long as we had not left the island, we couldn’t be considered safe.

Let’s save the discussion about ’Shield’s’ origins for after our escape; I urged them to board the ship promptly.

Right now, the island is experiencing a ’special period’ where the surrounding barriers have vanished, allowing the Shell Ship to leave smoothly.

Once on board, Qinghan placed the Mummy back in the driver’s seat, and as soon as the mummy sat, countless wire-like things emerged from the back of the seat, inserting into its spine.

Undead Heart was returned to the mummy’s chest, and the team leader quickly slashed his palm, dripping blood onto the heart.

Qinghan pressed my shoulder, instructing me to protect the team leader and his group well. "You haven’t lost the house keys, right? In the Lakeside Home apartment, there is a will of mine. Whoever holds this will is my heir. Remember, the address is—"
