Chapter 229: Chapter 230: So Twisted

The fact that he hesitated that slight beat proves he took Bi Shi’s request to heart, and only agreed after careful consideration.

I know Bi Shi wants to get involved in the clan’s struggles again and seek revenge on the arch-enemy who once locked her in the Tomb Prison. However, times have changed, and the road ahead is long, so all I can do is wish her good luck.

Although Otuna was once a queen, she wasn’t a formidable opponent. Her reign on the throne lasted only a few days before she was overthrown.

She probably knew that with her strength, she couldn’t openly compete with other "power giants," so she planned to shift to behind-the-scenes maneuvering with a cunning escape.

Unfortunately, whether in the past or now, her thinking has always been somewhat "simple."

My enemies and Bi Shi’s enemies are not easy to deal with. If they are still alive, they must have already established extremely deep roots in the current era.

Bi Shi’s intention to leverage the resources in He Su’s hands is likely due to this realization.

We sat on the cliff’s precipice for a day. As the sun set, Bi Shi’s reinforcements hadn’t arrived, and we had no idea what He Su was doing in the control room.

Night fell again, and instead of reinforcements, we awaited the enemy army.

When the first shell landed in the jungle, the three of us, led by Bi Shi, had already crawled down to the launch pad below the cliff.

Hiding the weapon launch pad in such a place is indeed very discreet. The weapons He Su used to sink the submarine were launched from here.

Bi Shi knew this location, but didn’t know how many weapons were stored inside. By hiding in the launch pad, it was like hiding in the barrel of a gun, and if a bullet was fired, we’d be in trouble.

However, apart from this spot, there were no other "bomb shelters" nearby. Returning to the mine tunnels was too dangerous, as the place had already collapsed once.

After we hid inside, the shells outside, like musical notes on a score, fell on the island one after another, forming an intense and shocking symphony.

If the bombing continued, the island would either be flattened or sunk. I figured that those capable of doing such a thing must be people from Shield.

They must hate this island now. Their advanced instruments, equipment, and weapons failed to intimidate the creatures on the island and instead provoked them into a frenzied counterattack.

Unless they think of a way to completely eradicate the living creatures on the island, sending more people to the island would be futile.

If I were them, I’d also feel unwilling. Having invested so much in terms of manpower, resources, and funding, if it all ended in vain, the person in charge might have to pack up and leave.

This should be their last chance to remove all obstacles on the island, but no matter how hard they tried or how ruthless they were, it was in vain.

The Undead Heart was taken by the group leader, and the Big Bamboo was destroyed by Chen Qinghan. Currently, only He Su’s gold mine remains, but Shield’s meticulous planning and high costs were never intended just to find an already exploited gold mine.

Or perhaps they knew finding treasure was hopeless and decided to destroy this place. Some parts of a living person’s mind are very peculiar: if they can’t have it, they destroy it. It’s so twisted!

The island shook as it was bombarded, and we hid in the launch pad, which felt somewhat like a ventilation duct, when Bi Shi accidentally touched another entrance with a protective net.

This entrance was narrower than the "barrel" of the launch pad, and only allowed for crawling inside. Bi Shi crawled in halfway, looked around, and judging by the path, said it seemed to lead to the control room under the gold mine.

Chen Qinghan paused slightly and said that this might be a maintenance tunnel. The control room under the gold mine was quite far from the surface, and if there was a malfunction inside the launch pad, it would waste a lot of time for a repairman to crawl up to the surface and come back down.

Therefore, building a direct tunnel between the two places could resolve the time-consuming issue.

Leaving Chen Qinghan to assist, Bi Shi and I crawled in to explore the path. After several tremors, this tunnel might already be blocked, and whether we could enter the control room was uncertain.

Fortunately, the tunnel was fine. We successfully crawled into the warehouse outside the control room. The control room door was unlocked, and when we entered, He Su was lying on an operation panel, apparently having fallen asleep again.

"This won’t hold, hurry."

The entire underground space was shaking, and the hanging lamp above looked like it was about to fall. The control room walls had also cracked with lightning-shaped fissures.

Bi Shi found a rope, tied a knot, and looped it around He Su’s upper body. One of us pulled from the front while the other pushed from behind, and we dragged He Su out of the control room.

Soon after, the control room was crushed by the collapsed earth and stones, and with another loud bang, the maintenance tunnel was completely severed. The area hit this time was likely the cliff.

Chen Qinghan was waiting at the tunnel entrance. Upon hearing our voices, he immediately crawled in and grabbed the rope. The three of us worked together to get He Su out of the tunnel, but the launch pad was already severely damaged by then.

"This won’t do, jump into the sea." Chen Qinghan decided swiftly, carrying He Su on his back and running out.

Shield truly intended to level this island. We wouldn’t be safe anywhere on the island.

Following Chen Qinghan, Bi Shi and I jumped out of the launch pad. Below the cliff was the sea, and just as I dove in headfirst, a question crossed my mind: how deep was the water?

Thankfully, the water was deep enough, and there were no reefs below. I let out a sigh of relief as I surfaced. Even though my head could withstand bullets, breaking my neck would be a major eyesore.

With fragments of rock constantly falling down, the broken cliff looked like a chewed-up cake. We dragged He Su and swam towards the open sea.

Suddenly, the entire island tilted slightly to one side and then swung slowly to the other, like a weightless balance swaying left and right.

The sea water near the shore rapidly retreated back to the ocean. As we swam, our feet touched the ground; as we swam further, the sea water disappeared. Chen Qinghan simply crouched on the soft sand, with the water gone but the fish still floundering in the sand, more bewildered than us.

"The island is rising," Chen Qinghan said.

"There are living things under the island," Bi Shi added.

"Ah... it’s that..." I looked at Chen Qinghan, thinking he would continue my line of thought, but he didn’t. Like Bi Shi, he was waiting for me to continue.

"Remember the ground below the Big Bamboo? It was soft, like it was alive! When I fell down, it was like landing on a sponge, and later that ground sank, burrowing deeper underground."

Amidst the landslide and earthquake, the island kept rising. The sky above was densely covered with dark clouds, as if someone had pulled up a "curtain" in one swift motion, completely blocking out the sunlight. Thunder and lightning roared overhead, yet there was no wind or rain, like the weather was declaring, "I have anger, but no tears."

"I told you before, if you don’t stir up trouble, you’ll be fine. Now look at the mess they’ve created!" Bi Shi muttered, tightening the cloth bundle on her chest. On our way back from the Big Bamboo, she recovered the music box.

"What kind of cursed feng shui place is this? Is it like attracts like?" I noticed a mountain peak rising in the center of the island. While it seemed like a mountain peak, it actually resembled a volcano crater, also spewing hot air. But I knew it was a living creature, not a real mountain.
