Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Boss Lu’s ’Breadcrumbs

The weight of the two people falling to the ground smashed the Water Monster into the sand, but its tentacles still dutifully held us up.

Qinghan rolled on the ground, then used the momentum to stand up and pulled me out of the danger zone.

With the Water Monster’s tentacles cushioning us, none of us were injured, and Qinghan’s movements were fluid and effortless, even more impressive than a stunt actor in a movie.

He pulled me over to Wen Jing and his group’s side, Miss Scream was already pulled back by Wen Jing, and seeing everyone was gathered, she immediately cried out that she needed to wash her face.

Their backpacks had long fallen into the sand sea and disappeared, so naturally, the water and food were all lost.

Each of our heads and bodies was covered in a layer of sand, but at the moment, there were no conditions to tidy up personal hygiene.

The Big Worm Grass was burning and emitting thick smoke, and with its massive size, who knows how long it will burn before the fire goes out. The underground air might get depleted by it, so we must leave here as soon as possible.

Qinghan returned to the Big Worm Grass, pulled on the rope, retrieved the sword, cleaned it in the sand, and strapped it to his back.

Wen Jing’s backpack was lost, but the compass Qinghan gave him was still there, so we headed back onto the correct route. The Water Monster was hardy, jumping out of the sand to continue traveling with us.

On the way, Wen Jing mentioned the reason they deviated from the route was to avoid Boss Lu.

They heard someone behind them, knowing it wasn’t me or Qinghan, so they just wanted to hide on the side and wait for Boss Lu’s group to pass before returning to the right path.

But someone broke off from Boss Lu’s team, also walking towards them.

One person was injured, and the smell of blood attracted the dead vines. The injured person’s companion immediately abandoned him and hid themselves.

The injured person had his heart eaten by the red vine and hung on the dead vine like a puppet. That must have been the figure Qinghan and I saw, imitating Miss Scream’s voice, which was actually the red vine.

Of the two who abandoned their companion, one was quickly consumed by the red vine, which is the heartless corpse we saw, and the other hid in the sand, throwing a flashlight at Qinghan and me, hoping to divert disaster elsewhere, but was also consumed.

Wen Jing didn’t know why the three left Boss Lu’s team, or if Boss Lu exiled them, the reason is unknown to us.

Now that the Big Worm Grass is no longer threatening, we should just follow our path.

But after walking on the correct route for half an hour, we found another corpse.

Qinghan was cautious; he stopped to examine the corpse, wanting to know the cause of death because the surface had several bullet holes, one on the forehead, yet there was no blood inside or out of the bullet holes.

Unless the person had been dead for a while when shot, we couldn’t explain what we saw.

Shunfeng asked if there were still dead vines in the sand, but Wen Jing said it was impossible. There was no wound in the heart area, so it wasn’t the work of the dead vine.

Still, being part of Boss Lu’s group, I suddenly had the feeling that Boss Lu is like the little girl in the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel," leaving ’breadcrumbs’ as markers along the way.

Of course, these markers were left for us, not for herself.

"It’s all your fault, insisting on going back to get your junk, almost costing our lives. If we all left together, we’d have been out by now!" Miss Scream was quite irritable, complaining a heap of words; my ears were getting calloused.

She kept working on her long hair, trying to clean out the sand, but it was a futile effort. Her curly hair tangled up, and the more she pulled, the more it hurt, making her even more irritable.

I let her words go in one ear and out the other. There are plenty of people who dislike me; she doesn’t even come close.

There were tomb robbers who went to great lengths to kill me, but none could do it by just scolding me to death or injury. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"No one let you come down, you insisted, yet blame others for your uselessness. Little Fu lived here for so long, why can’t she go back to pick up important items? Ridiculous!" Wen Jing had endured listening to complaints for a long time, initially kept quiet under Qinghan and Shunfeng’s gaze but couldn’t help rebutting after getting annoyed.

"Deadbeat, who do you think you’re talking to? Without my dad funding you, would you have found this place? A bunch of ingrates!"

Miss Scream’s voice suddenly rose, suppressing Wen Jing’s momentum. While Wen Jing could bicker with Shunfeng, in an argument, he wasn’t as good as Miss Scream.

"You’d better understand clearly, if something happens to me, it won’t matter if you make it out, my dad won’t let you off."

I’ve heard worse threats. Tomb robber teams are always outwardly harmonious but inwardly discordant; in critical moments, mutual threats are common.

Luckily for Miss Scream, she was with Qinghan and them since they are not professional tomb robbers and lack the ruthlessness of tomb robbers. When threatened by her, they’re just individually angry at most, ignoring her.

But Miss Scream didn’t seem to understand what it means to stop since it’s adequate; after speaking, feeling unsatisfied, she raised her hand aiming to slap Wen Jing.

"That’s enough, stop it." Qinghan finally spoke up.

Miss Scream’s hand stopped mid-air, as Wen Jing had already dodged to the side, only a fool would stand still to get slapped.

Qinghan had been squatting by the corpse, examining the cause of death, and Miss Scream, now entirely not wanting to control her temper, stepped up to the corpse and kicked it hard.

"All bullying me, damned thing, deserves to die!"

After Miss Scream’s kick, the corpse abruptly sat up and bit her leg.

At Miss Scream’s piercing scream, Qinghan swiftly reached out, grabbed the corpse’s nape, and snapped its neck with a click.

The corpse’s head immediately drooped to one side upon seeing this scene; I suddenly remembered something.

"Get away!" I dashed up to pull Qinghan back, simultaneously kicking Miss Scream two or three meters away.

At this moment, Wen Jing and Shunfeng, who were farther from the corpse, gasped in shock, reaching out to help catch Qinghan and me.

Turning back, we saw one by one bean sprout-like things growing from the corpse’s surface, getting longer and longer until they reached half a person’s height.

Then they began to stretch outwards as if searching for something, but finding nothing, they quickly withered, turning to dust and falling into the sand.

"What... what is this thing?" Wen Jing asked in disgust, looking at the perforated corpse.

"Ugh~I can’t, I have trypophobia." Shunfeng glanced at the corpse, hastily turned and covered his eyes.

"What are you doing? Ow... it hurts, crazy woman, do you have a death wish?" Miss Scream clutched her stomach, barely managing to sit up.

"This is a kind of biological toxin from the maze tomb passage, which, after infecting the human body, causes the blood to coagulate and quickly leads to death." I ignored Miss Scream’s curses and explained to Wen Jing.

"Its formidable aspect is that after the infected individual dies, they can still continue to walk and will counterattack if attacked."
