The Informal Tomb Raiding Diary: She is the occupant of the tomb!-Chapter 91: Sending Caterpillars to Bite You
"There really was no one, I swear, only a monster that looked like decayed and stinky brain matter." Jerry raised his hand in a swearing gesture.
I gritted my molars. These young girls dared to attack my partner.
"That thing, where did it go?" The girl with hair down to her ears asked.
"It crawled under the floor and escaped." Jerry answered very honestly.
"Oh, escaped?" The short-haired girl sneered, pulling a parachute knife from the strap on her thigh, and slowly approached Jerry.
Jerry talked the most, and seemed like an easy target, so the short-haired girl appeared to want to break him down.
Just as she got close, she covered her nose. Jerry had been smeared with bird droppings and was covered in dirt from hiding in the cave. Having just sobbed his eyes out, he was a mess of tears and snot, looking like a weather-beaten stray dog, and the short-haired girl intentionally kept her distance.
But the parachute knife didn’t fear the stench. The tip of the knife pressed against Jerry’s neck, applying a little pressure would cause blood to spurt.
"It escaped? Didn’t attack you?" The short-haired girl was obviously the leader among the five, with the other four centered around her, two of them pointing guns at me, and the other two at Chen Qinghan and Jerry.
"Att-attacked." Jerry instinctively swallowed, his throat bobbing up and down, leaving a small cut from the knife’s tip on his neck.
"You managed to fight it off?" the short-haired girl continued questioning.
"We didn’t, it killed my companion and then ran away." Jerry hurriedly added after explaining, "We really don’t know why."
Jerry was such an open book, it was clear whether he was lying or not, so the short-haired girl had a reason to press him.
"No worries, we can lure it out." The short-haired girl revealed a sinister, cold smile, nodding to her companions.
The woman who was pointing a gun at Chen Qinghan immediately pushed him, indicating she wanted to push him toward the coffin.
"You’re just wasting your efforts, it seems like it’s had its fill." I stepped in to block Chen Qinghan’s path, turning to shield him behind me.
"How do you know without trying? Seems like you know what it likes." The short-haired girl twirled the knife in her hand lightly, every movement and word controlled by her villain’s creed, with every strand of hair screaming malice.
"You’re wasting time. Are you here to do experiments or to capture it? If it’s the latter, it should already be heading towards the tomb entrance. It’s eaten enough and is ready to go out." I stood firmly in front of Chen Qinghan, unwilling to budge. If they refused reason and resorted to violence, I’d have to protect Chen Qinghan first.
I’m not sure if the bird droppings were enough, but I know it consumed all the crystal minerals underground. There must be a reason for it, besides gaining strength, I can’t think of anything else.
After gaining power, of course, it would want to escape this prison-like ancient tomb. Who would want to live here forever?
Luckily, the short-haired girl heeded my words. Her main task here was to find the creature, and after missing the opportunity to capture it because of us, they would’ve gained nothing.
The short-haired girl signaled to the other four, and the five of them retreated to the edge of the pit, returning the way they came.
Their figures had just disappeared at the mouth of the pit when I ran towards the passage entrance, calculating the time, the entrance should be open by now.
I found the passage with caterpillars, and as soon as the door opened, I used a shovel to drive them all to the edge of the pit, kicking each one down.
"Hmph, bullying my partner, let them have a taste of this." I kicked the last caterpillar down, smugly raising an eyebrow.
Counting on the caterpillars to eat all five of them was unrealistic; they all had powerful weapons, but it was guaranteed they’d suffer a bit.
Soon, gunfire sounded from below. Judging by the sound, they were running quite fast, already entering the lower space of the mechanism passage.
The caterpillars avoid areas that aren’t part of their territory, but this space doesn’t include the area under the floor.
Jerry looked bewildered, asking, "Why didn’t they attack us?"
This question was hard to answer. Just then, a sudden idea struck me to lure the caterpillars to bite them, and the caterpillars seemed to receive my ’hint’, heading straight for those women.
So, faced with Jerry’s question, I shrugged, saying, "You’re too stinky, they probably mistook you for one of their own. As for me and Professor Chen, we’re just too cool and detached."
Hearing my nonsense, Chen Qinghan actually nodded and agreed with a hum.
With his brain like mush now, Jerry actually believed my nonsense too.
The plaza was once again left with just the three of us. Jerry was at a loss, looking at us eagerly.
I glanced up, wondering if I should continue digging the tree roots. Chen Qinghan then said:
"Let’s go, follow them."
"Follow them? They’re too dangerous, no, no." Jerry touched the wound on his neck, the fear of nearly getting his throat slit should still be fresh.
"If they can get in, they can get out, which means there’s a way."
Chen Qinghan made sense, but Jerry had a strong aversion to those women and the caterpillars.
"Clearing those tree roots completely would take at least a few days, maybe longer." I said.
"But it’s safer than going back into the passage." Jerry was truly frightened, developing a strong repulsion.
"I should’ve never come to this damned place, damn it!" Jerry exclaimed, about to cry again.
"Cut it out, hold it in, cry again and I’ll throw you into the passage." I scolded coldly.
Jerry sniffled, holding back his tears. If he were an ordinary person, he certainly suffered a lot on this trip.
But in such an environment, he couldn’t be allowed to wallow in pessimism and despair, or he’d really break down.
I’ve seen many tomb robbers go insane because of it. This fool, though incompetent, bore no ill will, and I hoped he’d make it out safely.
Reluctantly, Chen Qinghan and I pulled Jerry down into the pit.
Those women moved quickly. The space beneath the mechanism wasn’t regular, and when we entered, caterpillar corpses were scattered across the ground.
The pile of caterpillar corpses served as our guide. Following them, we’d catch up to the women.
We proceeded slowly. If we truly encountered them, it would lead to another fight. If we accidentally killed them, who would guide us?
After walking for over twenty minutes, the caterpillar corpses disappeared, but fortunately, there were footprints on the ground.
"This isn’t right, we’re going in the wrong direction." Jerry suddenly spoke up.
"What’s wrong?" I asked.
"The tomb entrance isn’t this way," Jerry said.
"Some passages are impassable, taking a detour is normal," I said dismissively.
"But we’re heading back, almost to the plaza again," Jerry said urgently.
"Are you sure?" I raised an eyebrow.
"I’m sure, my brain doesn’t forget directions," Jerry said with rare confidence.
