Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Time Changes Many Things

The rope is quite long, probably around fifty meters. The ground I landed on was fairly flat. When I looked down, I saw it was paved with stone slabs, somewhat like the tiles on modern sidewalks.

Maybe it’s been covered by fog for many years, the surface of the bricks was damp, like after a recent rain.

I used my small flashlight to search for the silhouette of the five sisters in the fog. It was uncannily quiet below, the only sound was my footsteps.

I sensed my surroundings, but there was no living thing capable of thought. There was absolutely no wind here, and the air wasn’t circulating at all, nor did I know if the fog was toxic.

I focused on the ground, guessing that the five sisters didn’t wear gas masks and, after descending, might have inhaled poisonous gas, fainted or poisoned to death.

After about ten minutes, I confirmed I was walking in a straight line, then I was blocked by a large door.

More accurately, it was a city gate, with city walls on either side, entirely built with stones. However, the gate was made of metal, the same material as the corrosion-resistant bridge.

I withdrew my hand from touching the gate and tried pushing inward. The six to seven-meter-tall gate swung open with just a gentle push.

The door and its hinges made no sound at all when I pushed it. I peered inside. The fog was thick inside as well, but I could vaguely see a road ahead.

I slipped through the gate, glanced at the position of the latch, it was about three meters high. This door wouldn’t be easy to lock without a ladder to step on.

As soon as I withdrew my hand, the gate closed automatically, again without a sound. The door was half a foot thick, and made of metal. I didn’t expect it to open and close so lightly.

I walked along the road further in, and the further I went the weirder it became. Before, seeing the city walls so high, I thought there was no need. But upon entering, I realized all the buildings here were enormous.

The houses on both sides of the street were seven to eight meters high, with door frames uniformly about four meters. They seemed to be made for giants.

Curiously, I approached a house, gave the door a push but it didn’t budge. I tried pulling it outward instead, and this time it opened.

Peering inside, I saw that the living room furniture was all oversized. A single chair could seat at least four people.

"Giant Country..." I muttered to myself, closed the door, and continued my search for the five sisters.

In front of a row of houses was a plaza, it took quite some effort to climb to the rooftop of one of the houses. Standing on top of the ’giant house’ I could finally see the plaza.

Something seemed to be moving there now, and there was light coming through, possibly from a flashlight.

Although the buildings within the city were tall, they were built relatively close to each other, barely half a meter between each house.

Jumping from rooftop to rooftop, I gradually approached the plaza. I wasn’t sure, because the moving object I just saw was gone, replaced by the shadow of a person.

I squatted on the roof of a house closest to the plaza, observing that shadow secretly.

"Stop looking; come down," the voice unmistakably belonged to Chicken Shit.

"Your eyes are too sharp; even in this heavy fog, you can spot me." Since I’d been discovered, there was no need to hide anymore. I climbed down directly and walked toward Chicken Shit.

"I can’t see, but I can smell you. Your scent, no matter how many years pass, remains... unpleasant."

"Oh, your scent isn’t much better. If I didn’t know you, I might’ve thought the septic tank in this tomb had come alive."

I retorted immediately, denying her the satisfaction of having the last word.

"You haven’t changed, not sparing anyone with your words," someone said, walking slowly toward me through the mist.

Indeed, she was walking, not flowing like a liquid or slithering like a snake.

And five people lay sprawled across the plaza, two of whom had turned into mummies.

"Look, I didn’t kill those two people to give you face. Shouldn’t you thank me?" The person who approached, no longer appeared like Chicken Shit from before, but as a full-bodied human.

Thick black hair, a healthy complexion, bright eyes, along with intact limbs and an alluring figure.

"Thank you, very much, many thanks!" If saying thanks would make her spare Chen Qinghan, saying it ten thousand times wouldn’t be an issue. After all, gratitude is free.

"You—" But hearing my thanks, she seemed displeased, taking a sharp intake of breath as if to speak, then suddenly deflated, sighing, "Forget it, maybe time really changes everything, people included."

"Indeed, I was a pauper before, now I’m about to strike it rich. As long as I’m alive, there’s hope." I nodded in agreement.

"That’s why they’re afraid of you living, but you’re still alive; their nightmare is about to begin," said Chicken Shit, looking a bit excited.

"Ahem~ to be honest, I’ve lost my memory. I’m alive, but I don’t remember things from before. I mean... before being buried," I said, scratching my face awkwardly.

"What memory loss, it’s a punishment. Who are you, to be hindered by such a trivial trick? Ridiculous. I can’t wait to see their faces of despair," Chicken Shit had an appearance akin to an East Asian, but her aura was more aloof—what was it called... world-weary face?!

Can a person’s character match their appearance?

Why do I feel like she wants to destroy humanity, to destroy the world!

"Um... I wasn’t planning on taking revenge on anyone. I have a job now, essentially a stable one. I can even earn extra. Maybe next year I’ll be able to buy a house on loan. I have—"

"Shut up! You just haven’t recalled your past yet. Once you do, you’ll realize what you said is bullshit. The shackles have fallen off, you will remember!" Chicken Shit suddenly grabbed my shoulders, shaking them vigorously twice.

Chicken Shit wore an angry expression, a deep-seated resentment was visible in her eyes. I could see clearly that she was the one seeking revenge.

"Ah, perhaps you should go ahead first, and wait for me to help once I’ve remembered." Right now, even if I wanted to take revenge, I wouldn’t be able to find the target. Besides, whether I was imprisoned for a crime or wrongfully accused is still uncertain. As of now, I’m a law-abiding citizen who doesn’t engage in illegal activities!

"I don’t have the power to control the sacred flame, posing little threat to them. However, you will need me, and so, I’ve decided to follow you until the side effects of the memory shackles disappear."

"Um... that’s not so easy to handle. You know, the world outside has changed significantly now. Without an identity, it’s impossible to get by."

"You don’t need to worry about that. Over the years, quite a few tomb robbers have entered here. I’ve collected all their IDs and wallets; there are plenty of identity cards."

For once, I didn’t have a plan. Supposedly, having eaten so many people, she surely appeared as a monster in the eyes of the living. But suddenly turning into a human and insisting on following me made things quite tricky for me.

Lions and tigers eat people, and people kill lions and tigers—a natural rule. For her, consuming people might be necessary to restore her human form. She deemed it necessary to eat people, just as humans needed to kill her for self-preservation.

But ultimately, it was us who intruded into her tomb, trespassing into a private tomb without her permission.
