Chapter 97: Chapter 97: You’ve Fallen, I Haven’t

Sound waves are limited by distance and can’t surpass the far side of the underground river. What’s near the underground river anyway? It’s just rats, bugs, pangolins, and snakes—an endless cycle. They’ve been eating for thousands of years without losing their appetite, simply because they lack thought.

So, the dinosaur-like creatures are still animals. Even though they have limbs similar to humans and walk upright, running on two legs just like humans.

"What kind of creatures are they? Underground People?" I asked, leaning on the wreckage of the elevator.

"What you should be worried about now is how we’re getting back up," Bi Shi replied irritably.

"You came down without a rope, so go back up the same way," I said with a grin, shamelessly adding, "Take me with you while you’re at it."

"I can’t change back now. I need a rope!" Bi Shi said, veins bulging on her forehead, gritting her teeth.

I remember she didn’t have such a temper. At least, from the search results, bad temper wasn’t one of them.

Over the centuries, who hasn’t changed? She’s not the cool priestess I once knew anymore.

"Rope, sure, I have it." I took out a bundle of climbing ropes from behind me. This was given to me by Chen Qinghan before I went underground; he said Pete’s team had brought some advanced gadgets, even small robots.

If I got injured and couldn’t move down below, he’d come outside, get the small robot, and lower the rope, then pull me up.

It was a clever plan, and now the rope was coming in handy.

"Not long enough," Bi Shi said after taking the rope and shaking it out completely, estimating the length with her eyes.

"How about this: I’ll climb up first, you only need to climb halfway, and the rest of the distance I’ll pull you up with the rope."

"What’s the difference?"

"The difference is that it’ll save you some energy. You just recovered and are relatively weak."

"No need. I think you want to ditch me."

"You’re overthinking. Can you be a bit more optimistic? Alright, let’s tie ourselves together with the rope and climb up at the same time. If one falls, the other can catch her."

"Stop dreaming. The cliff is so smooth; you can’t climb up by hand. Without a grappling hook, this rope is only good for hanging ourselves."

Imagine two immortals staying in a hanging position for a hundred or even a thousand years. It would be quite tedious.

In such a deep underground place, blowing a whistle probably wouldn’t help. Chen Qinghan wouldn’t hear it from above.

"Then let’s wait. Chen Qinghan will come up with a way to rescue me," I said, feeling no rush. If a brainstorm would help, I’d just smack my own head if the dinosaur-like creatures came.

"You really trust him," Bi Shi said, with a noncommittal tone.

"Of course, I trust him. He’s a trustworthy person."

"Without interests at stake, who would work with you? He helps you because he wants something in return, right?"

"When someone wants something, that’s when they’re more trustworthy."

"Tsk... In the end, you still don’t have any real friends."

"Do you?"

That question left Bi Shi speechless. We were both ’sinners’ locked in a cage, and although she was slightly better off than me, not by much. With her personality, the odds of making friends were slim.

Maybe I hit a sore spot because her face remained sour the rest of the time. Ironically, she was the one who brought up the topic of ’friends,’ yet ended up being the one who got angry.

No matter what I asked, she wouldn’t answer, just giving me a cold face.

She’s really capricious, her mood changing as quickly as flipping a book. I took out my phone, opened an anti-depression video, and played it for her.

But instead of cheering her up, it made her so angry that she lunged at me to grab my phone.

I quickly put the phone in my pocket, the inner pocket of my jacket, zipped it up, and held it down tightly with my hand.

Time silently passed in the tense atmosphere, and after half an hour, Bi Shi finally couldn’t take waiting to sit here and do nothing. She grabbed me and headed back into the city to find tools and think of a way up.

A fifty-meter height was equivalent to a high-rise building, and the walls were smooth with nowhere to grip onto. Climbing up seemed impossible.

The wreckage of the elevators was loose and couldn’t support weight; they were useless.

We rummaged through Giant City for a long time. Besides furniture and simple tools, we didn’t find anything else.

The giants must have lived simple lives, so simple they seemed primitive. In any case, we didn’t find any prehistoric black technology, and Bi Shi suggested stacking furniture.

The furniture in Giant City was much larger than normal furniture. Tables were over two meters high. If we stacked them up, they could form a staircase, but making it fifty meters high was tough.

"I say we wait to be rescued. Don’t waste energy." I wasn’t willing to expend energy with her. The chairs and tables required two people to lift, and if she did it alone, it would attract those dinosaur-like creatures.

"You’ve become lazy, not me." Bi Shi stubbornly refused to give up.

Waiting to be rescued is laziness? What kind of logic is that? I didn’t bother to argue with her. Let her be. I was content sitting still.

Three hours later, Bi Shi completed a massive project on her own. Using furniture that one person could move, she built a tower with steps.

Although far from fifty meters, probably only a dozen meters high, it was sturdy. If we continued building upward, success seemed very likely.

Just as she rushed back, cheerily carrying a big basin, something dropped from above the furniture tower—bam!

With a loud crash, the furniture tower collapsed with clattering sounds, leaving only the solid bottom few meters intact.

"It wasn’t me!" I quickly raised my hands to show my innocence.

"Damn it—" Bi Shi glared at the destroyed furniture tower, her eyes spewing rage. She hurled the big basin in her hand at the thing that had fallen.

"Aaah!" A human scream came from beneath the pile of furniture.

The voice sounded familiar, like Jerry’s!

"Jerry?" I called out tentatively.

"Hey, Cold, how are you? Not injured, I hope?" A big guy dressed in metal armor crawled out from under the fallen furniture. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Where did you borrow Iron Man’s gear?" I looked at his armor, it didn’t seem like something from Pete’s team.

"Oh, they made me wear it. This thing is too thick; I can’t move my arms or legs." Jerry complained, pointing up the cliff.

"Who are ’they’?" I looked up, seeing nothing but mist.

"The women with tattoos on their bodies. My goodness, they’re fierce."

So the five sisters were just scouts; they had reinforcements outside. The rope I used to descend must have been taken up by them.

If the rope was taken, they didn’t want us to go up. So why send Jerry down now?

"They said, to bring the tomb master up, or they’ll kill Professor Chen." Jerry’s subsequent words cleared my doubts.
