The King's Lover-Chapter 449: Lewd Things
Caira was seated in the library when she heard footsteps; she lifted her head with a smile on her face to see Rylen approaching her desk.
"Prince Rylen," she called, happy to see him.
His occasional visits were a delight in her day. He made sure to come to see her at the library at least once a day and Caira was always happy to see him. They tended to spend their time talking and Caira enjoyed talking to him so much that she always looked forward to his visits.
"Princess," he returned her smile.
"What are you up to?"
"What an odd question to ask me while I am in the library?" she said with a chuckle and glanced down at the book she was reading as if to show him.
Rylen also laughed and sat next to her but Caira immediately realized he had sat close enough for their arms to brush against each other at the slightest movement.
He wasn’t too close for comfort but he was too close for Caira to concentrate on anything else. Her senses suddenly felt overwhelmed and it didn’t help that Rylen chose that moment to lean forward to stare into her book opened on the table.
It took all her self-restraint for her not to make any sound as his arm brushed against her. Her face immediately reddened and she turned away so he wouldn’t see her face.
"Is this a new book?" Rylen asked normally as though he didn’t notice Caira’s reaction.
She took two deep breaths to calm herself as she looked away from him and when she turned to respond, she felt less overwhelmed but she was still very aware of him.
"No," she replied. "It’s the one from yesterday. I told you all about it."
"Yes, you did," Rylen said and turned to face her, his arm brushing against her again as he turned.
Caira blinked as their eyes met and for a moment she forgot all about what they were talking about. Rylen was still speaking about what he could remember about the book but she couldn’t hear the words despite the fact that she was looking at his lips.
Why was she looking at his lips so intensely? Why was she suddenly so aware of him?
In this proximity, a faint trace of cedar oil rose from him, subtle and controlled. It filled her nostrils and Caira found herself leaning in.
Caira almost smacked herself. Why did she care what he smelled like? Why was she even thinking about it?
"Are you unwell?" Rylen asked with a frown and stretched out his hand to touch her.
Caira felt her heart burst out of her chest and she was certain she would faint as he touched her forehead. His hand was cool to touch and she instinctively leaned in.
"I am just a little tired," she mumbled and looked down. There was no way she could lift her face now.
Caira didn’t want to imagine how red her face was as his hand lay on her forehead. Rylen let his hand linger on her forehead and Caira could hear her breathing increase.
"You seem fine," he said and pulled his hand away. "I do recommend getting some rest."
"We both know you need more rest," she said and lifted her head to look at him.
For a moment his face gave off just how tired he was. Caira didn’t know exactly what was wrong but she had her suspicions that it was something that affected the Royal Family. Rylen didn’t speak on it and she didn’t want to pry.
"Thank you, Princess," he said and leaned in again, glancing at her face and Caira noticed his eyes lingered on her lips. She couldn’t help it, a flash of kissing Rylen passed across her mind.
Caira almost palmed her face. What was she thinking about? Why was she thinking about this now? Rylen was clearly distressed and this was the thing on her mind.
She told herself she was just curious, she had never gotten a real kiss and the one she shared with Caius couldn’t even be called a kiss. Their lips barely touched, and he had moved away as soon as he could.
"Are you sure you’re okay?" Rylen asked.
Caira realized he said something but she had been too busy with her thoughts of kissing him to notice. She turned her face away and cleared her throat.
She forced all the thoughts about kissing away from her mind before turning back to face him. "Yes, I’m just a little tired," she reiterated.
He gave her a small smile and stood. "I shall let you get back to it then. You should retire to your bedroom if you feel unwell."
Caira gave him a polite smile. She didn’t want to think about what Rylen’s reaction would be when he realized she wasn’t actually faint; she just couldn’t stop imagining lewd things.
He bowed before he withdrew from the library and Caira fell onto the desk with a loud sound, not caring that she was lying on her book.
"Is something wrong, my lady?"
"Yes," Caira said. "Something is wrong with me."
"Should I get the physician?" Mara asked with concern.
"It’s not that kind of illness," she whined.
Mara simply smiled and tapped her mistress gently on her back while Caira internally lamented her situation.
She would be lying if she said she didn’t prefer Rylen. He was nicer, a gentleman and he could immediately tell when something was wrong with her. She didn’t doubt that she would enjoy it if they kissed.
Caira drummed her fists on the desk startling her maid briefly but this only made Mara chuckle, however, she made sure her mistress didn’t hear, allowing her to have her moment without feeling more embarrassed than she already was.
If only Rylen were the one she was married to, Caira could not help but think. She internally screamed at herself for having these thoughts towards her own husband’s cousin.
Unfortunately, Rylen wasn’t the future king of Velmount. She had to keep her vows and make sure not to ruin the alliance. Lystern needed it. With her father dead and the kingdom on the verge of a possible war, she couldn’t upset that.
However, the crown prince wanted nothing to do with her and would rather be with... Caira didn’t want to think about it. If only the crown prince were half as gentle as Rylen was.
Caira kept her face buried for the remainder of the time she stayed in the library. There was no way she would be able to concentrate on reading now.
