Chapter 104: Before it’s too late (1)

"I did not mean that I hate everyone," said Helena.

"I know. I also know that you shouldn’t carelessly say things you don’t mean, but I also know that you said it to hurt her so you can go back to the palace. Mother and father have taken care of us all our lives. They spoiled us, perhaps too much. Why do you think they suddenly stopped caring about us now?" Hazel asked, wanting to know how Helena’s mind worked.

"It was my time to shine. I have given up the prince and all I want to do now is be in the palace with the queen helping me. I am sorry for bringing up you being jealous," Helena apologised, truly regretting her words. "I only wanted to hurt you because you don’t defend me enough."

"The jealous comment did not anger me. What I would like is for you to speak to your mother before she dwells on this conversation. I don’t want our parents to think they did a terrible job of raising us," Hazel said, thinking of her mother’s apology.

"Our family is quite normal with our parents giving us a lot of freedom growing up. I like how they raised us and I will not let you make them think they failed us. I’m all for you doing whatever you want because you are of age, but do not lash out at your family. You’ll need us in the end," said Hazel.

"I don’t need you lecturing-"

"It is not a lecture. I am offering you advice. You need to stop thinking that I am scolding you just because I am not coddling you and telling you what you want to hear. I don’t have time to think of your problems. I have other things to think about. Do as you wish," Hazel said and then walked around Helena.

"You, what are you going to do if they want to test you and father is not around to protect you?" Helena asked.

Now that she had calmed down she had to speak to Hazel about the test because it bothered her.

Hazel stopped walking and answered, "I will count on Tobias to protect me."

Helena frowned, thinking Hazel was a fool to count on Tobias. "Do you know what the prince is like? That man is cruel. He isn’t like what he portrays in front of crowds when he is alone with someone."

"Aren’t we all like that?" Hazel asked.

Hazel turned to face Helena. It was interesting now that Helena was saying that Tobias was cruel when he had been dreamy in her eyes before she was taken out of the selection. What happened between them?

Or was Helena just trying to paint him badly to have her reject the proposal?

"Not like the way he is. He’s completely putting on a show. I spoke to him yesterday and he scared me," said Helena.

"How did he scare you?" Hazel questioned, impatient for it to come out.

Helena got the feeling that Hazel wasn’t going to believe anything she said about Tobias. Maybe Hazel might think that she was trying to ruin her proposal. "Forget it. It’s not like you would care about what I have to say."

"That’s not true. If Tobias scared you, I want to know what happened. You are my little sister, and I want to know if he did something to you. So, what is it? Go on," Hazel urged Helena to continue. freewebnσvel.cøm

If it were something Tobias had not done right, Hazel would gladly voice her thoughts that he should never try it again. Or if it was something that would leave Helena fearing her life around Tobias then this marriage wouldn’t work. Hazel loved her family too much to have them around someone they feared.

"You won’t think that I am trying to ruin the day of your engagement?" Helena asked, wanting to be sure before she continued.

"Are you?" Hazel inquired.

"No. I spoke to the prince about David being in the palace and he-"

"Why would you do that?" Hazel interjected, not needing to know the rest of what happened. "Why did you speak to Tobias about one of my friends?"

"I was only trying to help avoid a misunderstanding later if he were to see you with David and he took it the wrong way. I was trying to help and he made it quite clear that I am not welcome. I fear what you might have to put up with so don’t lean on him as the one to always help you," Helena advised Hazel.

Hazel sighed, wishing she had known about this when she was standing next to Tobias at the door when they were awaiting her father. "You brought up David to him and he didn’t say a word to me. Why do you think that?"

Helena couldn’t think of a reason why right away. After some thought, she answered, "Because he will find David in secret?"

"No. He may think you were trying to say that David was someone I loved and you were trying to make him jealous. That may be why he was a little harsh with you. You didn’t help to avoid a misunderstanding. You planted one," Hazel said.

David was only her friend and should they cross paths in the palace, she would have explained that. Now there would be a small feeling that there was something more between them since Helena brought up David.

"I did not!" Helena exclaimed, angered by Hazel’s accusation. "If I was trying to ruin your relationship with the prince, I would not have brought up that I mentioned David to him."

"You might truly believe that you were trying to help right now so it doesn’t appear a problem you should have kept secret. I don’t know what to think about you, Helena. I thank you for being concerned but I am going to continue trusting Tobias. He has not let me down so far. I am going to my bedroom," Hazel said, needing a moment alone.

"I did not try to ruin your relationship with the prince. I made it quite clear that if he were to see the two of you speaking, you are only friends. Should he get jealous, that is on him because I have informed him it is only a friendship," Helena quickly spoke, trying to defend herself.

"I no longer want the prince therefore I won’t go out of my way to ruin what you have now. I can’t say that I am fully happy for you yet as you have what I dreamed of, but I assure you that I wouldn’t go out of my way to ruin your happiness. Please believe me," Helena begged.

"I will need some time to believe that. Your actions and words these days have not left me feeling like I could lean on you. Not even for my sake but for your own, be careful of what you bring up to anyone in the palace," Hazel said, forgetting about the conversation with David to offer Helena one more piece of advice.

"Be careful not to anger them. Tobias has warned me plenty about the dangers and since we are new to the palace, we must be more careful than anyone there. I await the day you can be happy for me," Hazel said and then left Helena.

Should they continue to talk, it might be longer before they could go back to normal.
