Chapter 295: Greater good (3)

"What are the names of the men who brought bodies to you?" Tobias questioned, ready to throw all of them in the dungeon and have them hung by the end of the day. Liam already had two names but there could be more.

Berkeley smiled, finding the king to be a fool. "Why should I tell you any more than I already have? Allow me to continue my work and I will speak with all that I know about the men you are looking for. They come here to speak of their plans."

Tobias didn’t need to negotiate with Berkeley this way. "Your days of killing the innocent for your sick plans are over. Have them question him about who aided in what he has done. Use the cruellest method we have to get the answers out of him."

What Berkely had done to innocent maids would be his fate. There were different kinds of tools in the dungeon to make Berkeley go through what he did to others.

The palace guards took the doctor away as Tobias ordered them to do, leaving Tobias alone to look inside the room.

Tobias placed his hands on his hips, not ready to enter the room yet as the thought of vomiting still lingered.

"There you are," Tabitha said when she spotted her son. "We were not done with that conversation, Tobias. Why are the guards taking away the doctor and what is that awful smell?" Tabitha wondered, covering her nose to block it out.

"I was done with our conversation. What the doctor did does not concern you. Leave," Tobias said, looking to his father to be the one to listen.

"We are not done. I will not allow you to place me as some monster and then force me from your side. I am your mother. You are in this world thanks to me. I deserve to defend myself before you just push me out of your life," Tabitha demanded.

Tobias must have lost his mind to say what he did and to just think that she would go along with it. She had no part in what happened to Hazel. Hazel was the one to pick her maids and was close to Grant. How was she to know what she spoke of with Grant would have led to this?

Tobias left Berkeley’s door open in hopes that the air flowing in would get rid of some of the smell. He still had to wait for the court to send men to help him look into what Berkeley had done so they knew all of his crimes and what death he was deserving of.

"Thank you for giving life to me. I do not want to speak of anything else now. I said what I felt and now I am busy. You will find yourselves in the dungeon if you continue to follow me," Tobias warned.

He knew that it was expected they would want to speak after he said he was cutting them out of his life but he preferred to have some space now. Following Tobias now when neither one wanted to acknowledge their faults was not the best idea. Especially now when he was looking into a crazy doctor.

It was a weird turn of events when at the weakest moment in his life when Tobias learned of why he did not have a child yet or that Hazel tried to kill herself, he could not turn to his parents for help. Somehow, he knew Hazel might get some kind of scolding for wanting to hurt herself.

"You will not throw us into the dungeon. As angry as you may be now, you have better sense than that. Indeed, Hazel wasn’t my choice for you since the girl never listened, but we agreed to work on that. I have done my best to ignore the way she does things and offered my advice which she doesn’t take," said Tabitha.

Tabitha could admit that she was a little mean in the beginning but that all stopped when Hazel agreed to take her advice. They weren’t seeing each other as they once did, so it went well. "I may not be queen but it was still my duty to question her about an heir."

"At dinner? At the start of dinner before we could all enjoy seeing each other again? You didn’t care for her feelings and that is why I cannot have you around. Do not speak unless it is worth hearing," Tobias said to his father. "I have been busy cleaning up all sorts of mess since I became king because you forgot your status and played friend to men in the court."

Tobias could no longer keep to himself that his father had dropped a mess for him to clean up when he became king. His parents liked to tiptoe around men from the court, not wanting to upset them. The court was here to help the royals, but his parents made it as though the court was the one with power.

Jeffrey stepped to Tobias as he was not going to take Tobias suddenly blaming him for problems he could not fix before they got bigger. "All you are doing is shifting blame to others. I did my part as king and left you in a good position. Take responsibility for what you failed to do."

Tobias knew he had done just that. He apologised to Hazel and even confessed that he failed to Edgar. What he was not going to do was let his father get away with thinking he had done enough.

"You joined in giving the court too much power. Growing up, I could not do something to upset the court. Even the day I proposed to Hazel, you wanted to have her looked at by the fucked up doctor and would not take my word that I did not touch her," Tobias said, his anger increasing now that he thought back to how persistent his mother was.

If not for the Wallaces, Tabitha would not have given in.

"I truly hate how I don’t know whether you would regret it if something bad had happened to Hazel that day. What you are doing now isn’t working in your favour. Get out of my sight so I don’t have to explain to Sofia why the two of you have gone missing," Tobias said and then walked around the two to get away from them.
