Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Into the Shadow’s Grasp

The cavern’s light pulsed like a heartbeat, each flare pushing the shadows back inch by inch. The monstrous entity shrieked, its form twisting as it recoiled. The whispers turned into anguished cries, the very air vibrating with their rage.

Greg clutched his ears. "Okay, make it stop! This is like listening to a thousand ghosts argue about taxes!"

Alex, standing protectively beside Mallory, raised his blade. "Mallory, whatever you’re doing, do it faster."

She gritted her teeth, tightening her grip on the glowing crystal. The visions from before burned in her mind—the villagers standing lifeless, their souls ensnared. If she didn’t stop this thing now, more people would be lost.

The shadow creature lunged.

Mallory barely had time to react before a wave of darkness surged toward them, swallowing the cavern in an inky black mist. The glowing crystals flickered, and the oppressive weight of the void pressed down on them.

Elara stumbled back. "It’s trying to suffocate the light!"

Quinn cursed. "Then we stop playing defense. I say we attack first."

Without waiting for a response, she rushed forward, her blade slicing through the mist. The attack landed, cutting through the shadow like smoke dispersing in the wind, but the creature only let out a low chuckle.

"Foolish."

The darkness thickened, tendrils shooting out and wrapping around Quinn’s arm. She cried out, struggling as the shadows tried to pull her in.

Mallory didn’t hesitate. She thrust the crystal forward, and a beam of pure light erupted, severing the tendrils in an instant. Quinn stumbled back, panting.

"Okay," she gasped. "That was unpleasant."

The creature let out another shriek, its form flickering. It was getting weaker.

Greg pumped his fist. "Yes! We’ve got it on the ropes!"

The cavern suddenly trembled.

"...Or we made it really mad," Alex muttered.

Without warning, the walls cracked, and the floor beneath them shifted. A gaping chasm opened, and before anyone could react, they were falling—again.

A Deeper Darkness

Mallory hit the ground hard, air rushing from her lungs. The others landed around her, groaning. Dust and debris rained down, and above them, the cavern entrance sealed shut.

Greg sat up, rubbing his back. "That’s it. That’s the last time I follow any mysterious glowing path into a cursed dungeon. I officially resign from this nightmare."

Alex sighed, helping Elara to her feet. "You can resign after we get out of here."

Mallory stood, looking around. The new chamber was even darker than before. There were no glowing crystals here—only an abyss so vast that even the light from the crystal seemed to struggle against it.

But there was something else.

Footsteps.

Faint, shuffling movements echoed from deeper in the cavern. Then a voice—weak, hollow.

"Help... us..."

Elara gasped. "The villagers!"

Without hesitation, they followed the sound. The darkness was suffocating, but the crystal’s glow provided just enough visibility to make out shapes in the distance.

People.

Dozens of them stood in eerie silence, their eyes dull and lifeless, their bodies motionless. They were the missing villagers.

Mallory approached cautiously. "They’re still alive."

Alex frowned. "But not fully aware."

Greg snapped his fingers in front of one villager’s face. No reaction. "Okay, this is creepy."

Quinn gripped her weapon. "This has to be the creature’s doing."

Mallory examined the villagers closer. Faint tendrils of shadow wrapped around their ankles, tethering them to the cavern floor like invisible chains.

She turned to the others. "If we break the hold, they should wake up."

Alex nodded. "Then let’s do it."

Mallory focused, raising the crystal high. Light flared outward, washing over the villagers. The tendrils recoiled, hissing as they burned away. One by one, the villagers’ eyes cleared, confusion and fear replacing their empty stares.

A woman gasped, clutching her chest. "What... what happened?"

Elder Rian, his voice weak, whispered, "The shadows... they took us... held us..."

Greg clapped his hands. "Good news! You’re all free! Bad news! We’re still in a death cave with a nightmare monster."

The cavern rumbled again.

The shadow creature’s voice echoed from the darkness. "You think you can take them from me?"

The shadows thickened, swirling into a monstrous form. The villagers screamed, backing away.

Mallory tightened her grip on the crystal. "We’re ending this now."

The Final Stand

The creature lunged, its massive form crashing toward them like a tidal wave. The group scattered, dodging as darkness erupted around them.

Alex and Quinn struck first, their blades cutting through the void. The attacks landed but didn’t slow the creature down. It retaliated, sending a shadowy tendril lashing out.

Greg pulled a villager out of the way just in time. "A little help here?"

Mallory didn’t hesitate. She poured her energy into the crystal, unleashing a powerful blast of light. The creature recoiled with an agonized scream.

Mallory advanced, stepping forward with determination. "You don’t control them. You don’t control anyone."

The crystal’s light intensified, piercing through the darkness. The shadow monster howled, its form beginning to dissolve.

Elara joined in, raising her own small talisman. "You have no power here anymore!"

The villagers, now free, raised their voices in a chant. The air crackled with energy, the combined force of their wills pushing the darkness back.

The creature let out one final shriek before shattering into nothingness.

The cavern fell silent.

Then, slowly, a warm glow spread through the space. The darkness faded, revealing an exit leading upward.

Greg let out a breath. "Holy crap. Did we actually win?"

Alex sheathed his weapon. "Looks like it."

Mallory smiled, exhaustion creeping in. "Let’s go home."

Back to the Surface

The journey back to the village was surreal. The sun was rising, casting golden light over the ruined homes. The villagers, now fully conscious, were overwhelmed with gratitude.

Elder Rian bowed deeply. "You have done what we could not. You saved us."

Mallory shook her head. "We just did what was right."

Greg stretched. "Well, if anyone wants to build a giant statue in our honor, I won’t object."

Quinn elbowed him. "Don’t push your luck."

The group laughed, the tension finally breaking.

But as Mallory looked toward the horizon, she knew this wasn’t the end.

There were still more dangers out there.

And they had only just begun.
