Chapter 116: Chapter 117 – The Breaking Point

Mallory’s pulse pounded in her ears.

The clawed hand continued to emerge from the portal, stretching impossibly far, grasping at the edges of reality itself. A deep, guttural whisper coiled through the air—felt more than heard. It called to her, pulling at something inside her chest, something tied to the key.

The Forgotten King stood still, watching. Waiting.

"The choice is yours," he repeated.

Two Paths, One Decision

Mallory’s mind raced.

Sealing the gate would keep the world safe—for now. The power beyond would remain trapped, waiting for someone else to face this same decision in the future.

But breaking it...

She could feel the power beyond. It was vast, ancient, limitless. If she reached out, if she claimed it—she wouldn’t just be a survivor anymore. She wouldn’t have to run, to fight, to scrape by.

She could reshape everything.

Greg’s voice snapped her out of it.

"Okay, I don’t wanna rush you, but THE NIGHTMARE HAND IS GETTING BIGGER."

The massive claw—easily the size of a building—scraped against the stone platform, sending cracks spider-webbing outward. The mist churned violently, warping and twisting as the presence behind the gate pushed harder, sensing how close it was to freedom.

Elara stepped beside her. "Mallory. Whatever you choose, we’re with you. But you have to choose. Now."

Mallory clenched her fists.

One decision.

One moment to decide the fate of everything.

The Seal or the Key

She took a deep breath—and made her choice.

---

Path 1 – The Gate Sealed

The air still hummed with the remnants of Mallory’s power. The gate was closed, its surface now solid stone, covered in intricate golden etchings that pulsed faintly with residual magic. The monstrous claw that had nearly broken through was gone, trapped forever in whatever nightmare realm lay beyond.

Mallory staggered back, feeling as if something inside her had been torn away. The effort of sealing the gate had drained her, but more than that, she felt an uneasy silence settle over the ruins.

No more whispers. No more unseen horrors clawing at the edges of reality.

Just stillness.

Greg let out a loud, shaky exhale. "I think I just had a religious experience."

Quinn dusted himself off and smirked. "You mean the kind where you pray you don’t die?"

"Yes. Exactly that kind," Greg muttered, collapsing onto the ground. "Oh gods, my legs don’t work."

Elara pressed her fingers to the stone where the gate had been, sensing its magic. "It’s done," she said. "The seal is holding."

Alex, quiet as always, was the first to look beyond the platform. "Then we should leave. Now."

Mallory nodded. She wanted to believe they were safe, that sealing the gate had ended the danger—but deep down, she knew better.

The Forgotten King, still watching from his spectral throne, regarded her silently. Then, in a voice like the wind through ancient ruins, he spoke.

"You have chosen wisely. But remember—no seal lasts forever."

Mallory clenched her fists. "Then I’ll make sure I’m strong enough when it fails."

For the first time, the king’s face hinted at a smile. "Then you are truly worthy."

With a wave of his hand, the mist parted, revealing a path back to the surface.

Mallory turned to her friends. "Let’s go. We have a long road ahead."

And with that, they left the ruins behind, the weight of their choice following them into the unknown.

Path 2 – The Gate Broken

The moment Mallory’s fingers brushed against the clawed hand, the world unraveled.

A shockwave exploded outward, hurling her friends across the platform as the gate shattered like fragile glass. The mist turned to a swirling vortex, howling with the fury of a thousand forgotten voices.

And then—it stepped through.

The entity that had waited beyond the gate was no longer waiting.

Its form defied logic, shifting between monstrous silhouettes and celestial patterns, a nightmare and a god all at once. Its very presence bent reality, warping the air, causing the stone beneath it to crack and bleed shadow.

Mallory felt something invade her mind, a thousand whispered voices demanding her submission.

But instead of terror, she felt power.

The entity recognized her.

Not as prey.

But as a vessel.

Greg, struggling to rise, screamed her name. "Mallory—DON’T!"

She turned to him, her eyes now glowing with the entity’s power. Her body was no longer entirely her own—shadow and golden light flickered across her skin, as if reality itself couldn’t decide what she was anymore.

"It’s okay," she said, her voice layered with something else, something vast. "I see it now. I see everything."

Quinn unsheathed his blades, stepping between her and the entity. "Mallory, I don’t like this. At all."

Elara’s hands trembled as she tried to channel magic, but the energy around them was wrong. "This isn’t you," she whispered.

Mallory smiled. "No. But it could be."

The Forgotten King, for the first time, showed true emotion—and it was fear.

"You have doomed us all," he whispered.

The entity behind Mallory reached forward, its formless limbs weaving into her like tendrils of ink. She did not fight it.

She embraced it.

The world tilted.

And everything changed.

Fate’s Divergence

Two choices.

Two worlds.

In one, Mallory and her friends walked away, carrying the burden of their decision, preparing for the day when the seal would inevitably weaken.

In the other, Mallory became something else, something more—or perhaps, something lost.

Both paths led forward.

Two futures split from that moment, leading to vastly different destinies.

But only one led to salvation.

And the other—

To ruin.

The End of the Beginning

One choice.

Two paths.

And a future forever altered.

What lay ahead? Only time would tell.
