Chapter 38: Chapter 38: The Return of Blinky

The atmosphere in the apartment was buzzing with cautious energy after Ethan’s arrival. The group was still adjusting to having a new face among them, and everyone took turns keeping an eye on him. Sprinkles, Mallory’s scruffy apocalypse dog, seemed thrilled with the change. But amidst all the commotion, one question hung in Mallory’s mind like a forgotten task on a to-do list:

Where was Blinky?

It had been weeks since the little blob-like creature had made an appearance. The refrigerator’s spontaneous gift of the quirky, jiggly pet had been one of the strangest moments in Mallory’s already bizarre apocalypse life. Blinky had been an ever-curious companion, often plopping around the apartment, chewing on random objects, and occasionally glowing when startled.

But lately, Blinky had gone suspiciously quiet.

Mallory hadn’t noticed until now, distracted by the constant drama of zombies, raiders, and the general chaos that seemed to follow their group. She furrowed her brow as she sat on the couch, absentmindedly munching on a stale bagel.

"Guys," she said, interrupting a tense conversation between Vanessa and Altair. "Where’s Blinky?"

Vanessa blinked, momentarily forgetting her point. "Blinky? You mean the jello pet thing?"

"Yes, Vanessa. The jello pet thing."

Altair adjusted his glasses. "Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen Blinky in a while. He used to hang around the fridge a lot."

"Maybe he got bored of us and left," Zara joked, flipping through a scavenged magazine.

"Not funny," Mallory said, standing up. "Blinky’s a part of this family, and I want answers."

---

Determined to solve the mystery, Mallory embarked on a full-scale Blinky hunt. She started with the obvious: the refrigerator.

"Alright, fridge," she muttered, opening the door. "You gave me Blinky in the first place. Don’t think I won’t interrogate you now."

The fridge, as expected, offered no response other than a soft hum. Mallory dug through its contents, pushing aside jars of questionable pickles and cans of mystery soup.

"Blinky? You in here, buddy?" she called.

Nothing. freёwebnoѵel.com

"Let’s check his other usual spots," Altair suggested, joining the search.

The group fanned out across the apartment, peering under furniture, behind curtains, and even inside the bathtub. Sprinkles seemed to think it was a game, barking and wagging his tail as he followed Mallory around.

"Blinky!" Mallory shouted into a heating vent. "This is no time to play hide-and-seek!"

Ethan watched the spectacle with a bemused expression. "Is this... normal for you guys?"

"Define normal," Vanessa replied, brushing dust off her knees as she checked under the couch.

---

After nearly an hour of fruitless searching, the group reconvened in the living room, frustrated and slightly concerned.

"Maybe he got out," Zara suggested, sitting cross-legged on the floor.

"Impossible," Altair said. "Blinky couldn’t get through the doors or windows. His gelatinous body wouldn’t survive the outdoors for long."

"Wow," Mallory said sarcastically. "Thanks for that uplifting thought."

Before anyone could respond, a sudden noise interrupted the conversation—a faint squelching sound coming from the direction of the pantry.

Mallory’s eyes widened. "You don’t think..."

Without waiting for confirmation, she bolted to the pantry, throwing the door open. At first glance, it looked empty. But then she spotted it: a faint, glowing blue trail leading into the crawlspace beneath the floor.

"Oh, Blinky," she groaned. "What have you gotten yourself into now?"

---

The group wasted no time lifting the floorboards again, revealing the same dark, musty crawlspace they had discovered earlier.

Altair shone his flashlight into the depths, and there, near the far wall, was Blinky. The little blob was glowing softly, quivering as if it had been caught doing something it shouldn’t.

"Blinky!" Mallory called, relief flooding her voice. "Get over here, you slippery little jellybean!"

Blinky hesitated, then began oozing toward the group, leaving a faint trail of bioluminescent slime behind.

"Why is he glowing more than usual?" Vanessa asked, eyeing the creature suspiciously.

"Probably stress," Altair said. "Or he’s eating something weird again."

---

As Blinky reached the edge of the crawlspace, Mallory scooped him up, cradling him like a prized possession.

"You had us worried sick!" she scolded. "What were you even doing down there?"

Blinky quivered, his glowing intensifying.

Altair crouched down, inspecting the crawlspace with his flashlight. "Wait a minute. There’s something else back there."

"What is it?" Zara asked, gripping her bat.

Altair leaned closer, his brow furrowing. "It looks like... eggs?"

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

"Blinky laid eggs?" Mallory asked, horrified and fascinated at the same time.

"I don’t think those are his," Altair said. "They’re way too big."

"What kind of eggs are we talking about here?" Vanessa asked, her voice tense.

"Alien-y looking ones," Altair replied, taking a cautious step back.

Mallory clutched Blinky tighter. "Okay, we’re officially in Nope territory. Let’s seal this up and pretend we never saw it."

"We can’t just leave them there," Vanessa argued. "What if something hatches?"

"Then we’ll deal with it later," Mallory said, inching toward the door. "Preferably from a safe distance."

---

In the end, they agreed to temporarily seal the crawlspace and monitor it closely. Mallory placed Blinky back in his favorite spot near the fridge, where he seemed content to wiggle and glow faintly.

"Don’t you ever scare me like that again," Mallory told him, wagging a finger.

Sprinkles barked in agreement, tail wagging as he licked the gelatinous blob.

For the rest of the evening, the group couldn’t stop glancing at the pantry, their minds racing with possibilities. What kind of creature laid those eggs? And more importantly, were they prepared to handle it when the time came?

As Mallory settled onto the couch, Blinky perched happily on her lap, she couldn’t help but laugh. The apocalypse had thrown plenty of surprises her way, but this—jello pets, glowing trails, mysterious eggs—might just take the cake.

"Guess it’s never boring around here," she muttered, scratching Sprinkles behind the ears.

Little did she know, the eggs would soon introduce a whole new layer of chaos to their already ridiculous lives. h
