Side Story Chapter 101

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ?!โ€

A rush of formidable energy struck Raphael, but it didnโ€™t come from the front, where the Sword Emperor was.

๐‘“๐˜ณ๐‘’๐‘’๐“Œ๐‘’๐’ท๐“ƒ๐˜ฐ๐“‹๐‘’๐“.๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐‘š

โ€œBehind me?โ€

Raphael instinctively raised his weapons, two swords with distinct abilities; his specialty was dual-wielding.

โ€œFuckโ€ฆ!โ€

His opponent was too fast and had extraordinary energy. Raphael couldnโ€™t even think about striking back; his opponentโ€™s spear made it impossible to close any of the distance between him and his opponent.

โ€œArgh!โ€ Raphael groaned in pain when the spear finally managed to stab his shoulder.

The paladins finally managed to close on their mysterious assailant.

โ€œWho are you?!โ€

โ€œSelim Sanders.โ€

โ€œSelim? Selim Sanders?โ€

โ€œYes, thatโ€™s my name,โ€ Selim answered, casually deflecting the swords flying toward him from all directions.

Raphael frowned and raised one of his swords up to his wounded shoulder.

Selim had been confident, but it didnโ€™t take long for his face to tighten. Raphaelโ€™s wound was healing. That was impossibleโ€”aura destroyed the very cells themselves, making such wounds incredibly difficult to recover from. Even a high priest couldnโ€™t heal a wound that serious.

โ€œIโ€ฆ am Raphael, the Saint of Recovery.โ€ A laurel wreath of light graced Raphaelโ€™s brow. He flapped an enormous set of wingsโ€”long enough to encompass the entire chamber.

Nevertheless, that didnโ€™t take long for Raphaelโ€™s confidence to collapse.

โ€œI-Iโ€”?โ€ Raphael saw a barrage of sabers unleashed upon him, eager to slaughter him. Although Raphael wasnโ€™t actually hurt, his back dripped with sweat. He didnโ€™t have to ask where the attacks were coming from.

โ€œSword Emperorโ€ฆ Duke Tremblinโ€ฆ!โ€

At some point, the paladins had become helplessly trapped in the center of the council chambers. There were only fourโ€”no, five opponents the paladins had to defeat in order to get to their target, Lady Sersiarin; the problem was that every one of those five opponents was remarkably strong.

โ€œLady Sersiarin!โ€ The Avalon Imperial Knights belatedly arrived at the council chamber.

Raphael bit his lower lip in frustration. โ€œGabriel, is there a solution for this?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThe two people in front are highly renowned figures from the previous generation, but even if we set them aside, the person standing beside the First Prince is Cain de Harry, the Combat Emperor, assuming that my memory serves me correctly.โ€

โ€œAll you had to say was that we donโ€™t have a chance. Shit, where the hell is Bel? If he and Michael were here right nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, the Combat Emperor is gravely injured, by the looks of it. Since he also seems to be carrying someone on his back, itโ€™s safe to assume that heโ€™s out of the picture,โ€ Gabriel determined.

โ€œโ€ฆIn other words, we do have a chance against them?โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€ Gabriel trailed off, his eyes shining in golden light.

His other title was the โ€œTruth-Piercing Eyesโ€. He could roughly estimate his opponentsโ€™ level without directly fighting them. Raphael held his ground to allow his colleague to work.

โ€œThe whole plan is getting messier by the second, shit.โ€

โ€œLet me ask the paladins from the Hubalt Empire something,โ€ Sersiarinโ€™s elegant voice suddenly interrupted. โ€œDoes the Hubalt Empire truly want the entire continent to be drawn into a war?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmph, that is exactly what weโ€™re trying to stop here. Why donโ€™t you know that?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re talking about Lady Aphrodite again.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s the cause of everything. If she really is innocent, then she should come out in the open and explained herself, but Avalon is stopping that from happening.โ€ Raphael scoffed.

โ€œI understand.โ€

The paladins blinked, confused.

Sersiarin turned to look at Valmont. โ€œSir Valmont, Iโ€™m sorry, but can you bring Lady Aphrodite here?โ€

Raphael and Gabriel's eyes widened. Theyโ€™d thought that considering how prideful Joshua Sanders was, he would never willingly hand over his friend. It wasnโ€™t just about betraying trust between friends. The continent held the Marital God in near fanatical regard, so what would happen if the Martial God yielded and handed Lilith Aphrodite over to the Hubalt Empire?

They would think that the Great Holy Empire of Hubalt was truly the most powerful nation on the continent now. The Paladinsโ€™ plan was perfect; all paths lead to victory. When Avalon turned down Hubaltโ€™s demands, they would not only be able to strike Avalonโ€™s heart but also have the justification to start the war. Even if Avalon accepted Hubaltโ€™s request, Hubalt's reputation would rise to untold heights.

โ€œAre we good now?โ€ Sersiarin asked.

โ€œโ€ฆIt would have been so much better if you had cooperated much earlier. We wouldnโ€™t have had to make things ugly.โ€

โ€œSheathe your swords and order your men to stand down.โ€

โ€œNo, my men will stand down only after we see the witch.โ€ Raphael grinned and sheathed his sword.

The plan could have gone very awry, but things were working, thanks to her. Raphael was hardly going to let this opportunity go to waste.

โ€˜Iโ€™ll buy time. Once we successfully surround Arcadia, it wonโ€™t matter if they give up the witchโ€ฆโ€™

The Four Paladinsโ€™ great dream was to raise Hubaltโ€™s flag over the entire continent with Avalon as the starting point.

โ€œโ€ฆSir Valmont,โ€ Sersiarin said again.

โ€œAre you sure youโ€™re going to be okay?โ€

โ€œBring her. Iโ€™m sure she doesnโ€™t want other people to be harmed because of her; she would find death to be a better option.โ€

โ€œS-Still, isnโ€™t deathโ€”?โ€

โ€œI know because that is how I felt.โ€

Valmontโ€™s mouth slammed shut. Lady Sersiarinโ€™s previous name was Sersiarin ben Brittenโ€”the Tragic Princess. Although she was fine now, she had been born blind yet had the Eyes of Truth, which could be used to read peopleโ€™s minds. She had been politically exploited by the previous Emperor of Avalon, and many of Avalonโ€™s nobles had continuously tried to take her hostage.

โ€œโ€ฆYes, maโ€™am.โ€ Valmont nodded.

โ€œThank you.โ€ Sersiarin smiled gently.

After looking at her with sympathetic eyes for a moment, Valmont turned his head to the side. โ€œIโ€™ll leave Lady Sersiarin in your hands.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ll be fine on my own here.โ€ Tremblin chuckled quietly.

Sersiarin giggled. โ€œYes, he is. Heโ€™s the Sword Emperor for a reason!โ€

Valmont vanished like heโ€™d never been there.

โ€œSince it looks like things have been sorted out for the most part, Iโ€™ll ask that the rest of the paladins lower their swords. This old man cannot tolerate your discourtesy in the Palace any longer.โ€

The paladins froze like sculptures as instant, overwhelming pressure struck them. Despite already being over a hundred years old, Tremblin had only become a monster stronger than before.

โ€œMmmโ€ฆโ€

Raphael and Gabriel were certain that they couldnโ€™t guarantee their victory even fighting him together.

โ€œโ€ฆPut down your swords, everyone.โ€

โ€œYes, sir!โ€ the paladins thundered. They placed their swords on the floor and the tension in the air relaxed quite a bit.

Cain let out a long sigh. โ€œPhewโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll definitely die of a heart attack someday. It was boring, but I think the time I spent searching for His Majesty is better than this.โ€

Cain glanced back at Kireua, who was still deep asleep.

โ€œBy the way, Iโ€™m worried about His Highness. Iโ€™m not seeing any obvious wounds on him, so why wonโ€™t he regain consciousnessโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWait, what are you carrying, Combat Emperor?โ€ Gabriel asked.

โ€œGabriel? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œI sense demonic power as Lilith Aphroditeโ€”itโ€™s at least a Demon King.โ€

Raphael's eyes widened. The paladins froze in the middle of placing down their swords, appalled.

โ€œWh-What are you talking about? I canโ€™t feel any demonic power right now.โ€

โ€œIt seems that it specializes in hiding its presence, but it canโ€™t fool my eyes. Iโ€™m sure that the person that the Combat Emperor is carrying has manifested an Evil Sinโ€™s authority,โ€ Gabriel said with certainty.

โ€œE-Evil Sin!โ€

The atmosphere took an abrupt turn. The paladins picked their swords up again and released an immense amount of divine power.

โ€œโ€ฆI definitely told you to put down your swords,โ€ Tremblin said in a low voice, releasing his murderous energy in response.

The paladins felt like they had entered a forest of swords and were standing on the tips of blades. Nevertheless, neither side backed down.

โ€œCombat Emperor! Explain yourself!โ€ Gabriel shouted. โ€œLady Sersiarin put a lot of effort into defusing the situation, so Iโ€™m sure you wouldnโ€™t want to make it worse!โ€

Cain was stumped. Although it would have been one thing if it werenโ€™t trueโ€ฆ it was.

โ€˜What should I do?โ€™

The longer Cain agonized, the more thick the divine power in the council chamber became.

Kireuaโ€™s eyes suddenly flew open and a howl emerged from his lips.

โ€œArghhhhh!โ€

Cain looked into Kireuaโ€™s eyes and found them grotesquely black without a single trace of white.

โ€œThis isโ€ฆ?โ€

Kireua exploded with demonic power that was just as dense as the divine power of the hundreds of paladins there.

โ€œYour Highness!โ€

โ€œHe has definitely manifested an Evil Sinโ€™s authority. Lady Sersiarin, say something!โ€ Gabriel demanded. โ€œThe man on the Combat Emperorโ€™s back is the Second Prince of the Avalon Empire. Am I wrong?โ€

Sersiarin didnโ€™t respond. She just stood up from the throne and watched Kireua with worried eyes.

โ€œGahhhโ€ฆ! What are you all doing?! Eradicate this evil right now!โ€ Raphael roared.

Cain was carrying the Second Prince on his back, and Selim was confronting the paladins; neither could make any moves, right when the fight could resume at any moment.

โ€œYes, sโ€”!โ€

A new person walked through the wide-open door of the council chamber.

โ€œStop. Nobody move.โ€

โ€œMartial Godโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œThis is my home, and I didnโ€™t allow any of my guests to draw their swords.โ€ Joshua looked around the council chamber as if he was sentencing them, and then slammed his spear against the floor.
