Chapter 34: A flavorful marriage

Aiden watched the couple sitting in their seats, saying nothing.

He wanted their opinions what he got was Adrienned leaning into Alex and saying nothing.

He couldn’t help raising an eyebrow, thinking to himself that this was not his capable secretary. This was a little canary who needed to be taken care of.

He watched the way she leaned into her husband. The way he held her was like he had done this a thousand times. He wouldn’t question their relationship. Whatever it was was none of his business.

He simply sat there waiting for one of them to respond.

"What kind of place uses sex as infrastructure?" Alex asked, his tone suggesting he was excited.

If Aiden hadn’t seen the way he and Adrienne were holding each other, he would have thought he was excited about the prospect of how such a building could exist. But seeing how close they were, he thought better of it.

"Are you excited about what kind of building it is or the prospect of playing there?"

Aiden didn’t hide his assumption. Whatever they chose to acknowledge was up to them.

Alex pursed his lips for a moment. Rather than answer the question Aiden asked, he said, "What proof do you have besides what you’ve shown us so far that the world will be ending soon?"

Ember placed a piece of paper on the table. This one was different from the one she had given Aiden. She couldn’t remember the things that happened before doomsday, so she talked to the CE. It was able to give her a few things as a way to convince people.

There were six things on the list, with dates. The CE told her to get the base to an optimal level, then it would tell her everything.

The six things were: An aurora borealis global event, a mass animal migration, the "static" glitch, minor tech failures, the fever, and finally the weeping statues.

When Ember first saw the list, she couldn’t believe she didn’t remember any of these happening. For a while, Ember thought her brain was faulty.

Then she realized the book never went into detail about what actually happened. And maybe the volcano and earthquake were only mentioned because they fit the natural disaster theme of the novel.

All that aside, she believed the CE wouldn’t give her events that wouldn’t happen.

"This is what we know so far. For the next three weeks, these events should happen based on the dates." Ember pointed to the dates on the paper.

The five people crowded around the paper, looking at the dates.

"This says the first one will happen two days from now," Alex said. He looked at the people in the room. "If it happens in the next two days and lasts for three nights, I’ll believe you."

He didn’t say anything else as he left with Adrienne.

Ivan was still sitting there, holding the paper.

"I have to tell you, I think you two are crazy," Ivan said, sitting stiffly on the couch.

"That’s fine. You think we’re crazy, but I can tell you’re crazy just by looking at you. Want me to call a psych ward to take you in?" Ember looked Ivan up and down, shooting him a dirty look.

"Psh, little sister, your brother is crazy enough for both of us." Ivan wiggled his eyebrows, looking between the two of them.

Ember didn’t reply.

"Are you two done?" Aiden asked. He turned to Ivan. "You don’t need to come back. We’ll call you."

"Throwing me away after you’ve used me. What kind of friend are you?" Ivan said, looking heartbroken.

Ember clicked her tongue, giving him a side eye.

Ivan stood up. Although he did enjoy bickering with Ember, he still had business to deal with. As he was walking out, he noticed Ember following. When they got to the front door, Ember spoke, "Don’t go on any business trips these days. If you can, postpone out-of-town business until a month from now."

Ember put on a devilish grin. "Also..." she put her hand on his shoulder. The change was almost immediate. "This is my gift to you. The third thing you wanted to know so much."

Ember pushed him out the door and closed it. Her devious smile was still on her face. She wondered how he would deal with it.

Aiden stood there. He knew what she did.

"Couldn’t help yourself, could you?" he chuckled.

Ember shrugged, "He wanted to know, so I told him."

Aiden grinned.

Two days passed quickly. The Aurora Borealis event came to fruition. Across the entire world, people watched the sight. It lasted for three. Scientists were baffled. Especially because it would pulse with different frequencies.

The day it left, Adrienne and her husband appeared at their house with Ivan in tow.

"Don’t you have somewhere to be?" Ember asked

"Yup, right here," Ivan said as he walked in casually.

Aiden didn’t mince words: "Now do you believe it?"

"Not entirely, but we can see that you might know something might be about to happen," Adrienne was the one to respond.

"How about I show the last thing I didn’t get to show you before?" Ember offered.

Ivan’s eyes lit up. "Are you doing it now?" He jumped up from his seat. "Let me phone a friend first?"

Ivan took out his phone, and Aiden snatched it away.

"Come on! They get to have fun, but I don’t?" He then turned to the couple and said, "You don’t know, I..."

Aiden covered his mouth, walking out of the room with him.

Ember brought them to the couch in the living room. "Don’t mind him, his bolts are loose."

"He seems happy with whatever that thing is," Alex said, confused.

"That’s because he’s an addict," Ember said dismissively. "Let’s get into it. I don’t know how to say this without sounding like I’m putting you in danger. But all you need to do is relax. I’m going to step out of the room in the next five minutes. You do what feels right."

Ember didn’t offer any other explanation. She only sat there scrolling through her phone.

Adrienne and her husband watched Ember on her phone, not understanding what she was trying to accomplish. But then they felt it. It was a light scent, almost imperceptible. It swirled around them, actively invading their senses.

They noticed the changes in their bodies.

"Did you just drug us?" Alex’s angry voice sounded.

"Not at all," Ember responded calmly.

She got up from her position on the couch. She walked over and touched Adrienne. Sitting beside her, she placed a kiss on her neck while Alex watched. Adrienne’s body visibly shook, and she closed her eyes and sighed.

Ember got up and sat beside Alex this time. She could feel the anger radiating off him. She didn’t move, and neither did he. Ember smiled, reaching out quickly to touch his hand before he could make a move.

She watched his eyes glaze over. She knew he felt it.

She got up, this time to leave the room.

"Do what feels right," she called out to them. "No one will come in until you come out."
