Her hands were now on the small of his back, and her touch was firm but getting slower and more deliberate. Rex could tell that the mood had changed because the conversation had gone from business to personal.
He said softly, "You’re not alone anymore."
"You have your family and friends who care about you."
"Friends like you?" She said it in a way that wasn’t quite teasing but wasn’t quite serious either.
"Yep, friends like me," Rex said.
Helena’s hands stopped moving again and rested on his lower back. "Can I be honest with you, Rex?"

"I haven’t felt wanted in a long time..." Helena starts to blush. "Not as a woman, a mother, a leader, or a mage, yes...but not as someone who’s desirable."
Rex slowly turned over and sat up enough to look her in the eye. Helena didn’t pull away; her hands were still lightly resting on his sides.
They were close enough now that he could see the tiny lines at the corners of her eyes and how her breathing had sped up a little.
"That’s not possible," Rex said, lowering his voice. "You’re smart, strong, and beautiful."
"Any man who fails to recognize those qualities is a fool! You know that, right?"
Helena’s cheeks turned a little pink, and she smiled, but she wasn’t sure. "Thank you for saying that..."
"Just to make sure... I’m saying nice things because I’m being honest with you." He reached up and pushed a strand of hair out of her face. "You should feel wanted... Helena..."
They stayed like that for a moment, on the edge of something that could go either way. Rex could push now, close the gap, and make her want him even more.
But that would be dangerous. Helena was smart, had a lot of experience, and was still able to tell if someone was trying to control her too much.
Instead, he let the moment breathe and let the tension build on its own.
After that, he smiled and leaned back. "Thanks for the massage... phew~! I feel so much better now that I’m ready for tomorrow’s training."
Rex thought to himself. "Only if one of you survived the bandit attacks..."
The moment ended, but it didn’t feel like a failure. Helena blinked and then smiled back at him, but there was something unreadable in her smile.
"Anytime," she said with a wink, adding, "I truly mean it... Whenever you need help, I will gladly assist in any way I can."

Rex picked up his shirt and left Helena alone in her room. He was pleased with how far he had come as he walked down the hall.

By the time Rex finished cleaning up all the dishes, it was dark, and Lily was waiting for him outside. She had put on a simple dress and let her hair hang down around her shoulders.

They walked through the quiet streets of the village together. The air was cool and pleasant to breathe.
Most of the villagers had gone inside for the night, so the roads were empty except for the occasional cat looking for mice.
"I love nights like this." Lily said softly, "Everything seems calm."
"Yes, it does," Rex said. "It’s hard to believe there’s danger out there when it’s so quiet."
For a while, they walked in comfortable silence, just enjoying being together. Rex led them to the edge of the village, where a small hill looked out over the fields.
He had already found this spot to be romantic.
Lily turned to look out over the view when they got to the top of the hill. Rex stood next to her, close enough for their shoulders to touch.
"Thanks for last night," Lily said all of a sudden, her voice barely above a whisper. "And another thanks for letting me be a part of this and not making me feel like I was in the way..."
Rex turned to face her completely and gently cupped her cheek with his hand. "Lily, you could never be an intrusion for me..."
"You mean a lot to me, and what we have is real."
Her eyes shone a little in the moonlight, and you could see how she felt. "I was so scared you’d think I was being childish and that I was just a silly girl with a crush."
"You’re not a child." Rex said firmly, "You know what you want, and you’re brave enough to go after it. That’s not common."
Lily leaned into his touch and put her hand over his. "I love you, Rex..."
"I know I’ve already said it, but you need to know it again, and it’s not going away!"

When they walked in, Rex caught Mara’s eye, and she knew right away. She nodded slightly and slipped away, coming back a few minutes later with a key.
"That room at the end of the second floor," she whispered as she pressed it into his hand. "It’s private, and... no one will bother you."
"Thanks," Rex said in a low voice.
Mara smiled, gave him a squeeze, and whispered. "Have fun, alright? I’m going to miss our lovemaking session..."
"Don’t worry. You’ll get it tomorrow, and don’t try to do it with your husband," Rex said with a smirk.
"No way... I can’t be satisfied by him anymore, and he’s always fast asleep, as always. What a fucking loser." Mara kissed him on the cheek before returning to her room.
Rex took Lily’s hand and led her down the hallway to the door that Mara had pointed out. He opened the door and went inside.
The room was small, with a clean bed and one window that looked out over the village square.
"Stay here," he said to Lily. "Please give me five minutes."
She nodded, her cheeks already red with excitement. Rex closed the door behind him as he stepped back into the hall.
He stood there for a moment, breathing and letting the truth of what was about to happen sink in.
This was it.
This was the moment that would complete Lily’s devotion to him and provide him with the necessary energy for his next power.
After that... he heard it.
A gentle knock on the door.
Rex opened it slowly, and there was Lily, her hand still raised from knocking. Now she was wearing a nightgown made of soft white fabric that fell to her knees.

Rex moved out of the way and opened the door wider.
"You really are looking forward to it, huh, Lily?" Rex smirks. "Alright... come in..."
She walked through the door, and it closed gently behind her.
