The Masked Virtuoso-Chapter 133: A Friend, Not an Enemy
The Battlefield Stands Still – A Rift Between Fate and Choice
The world held its breath.
The violet storm that had once raged, feeding off Kael’s fury, had weakened into an uneasy stillness. The sky, still fractured, no longer roared with Rift energy. The battlefield trembled under the weight of something even heavier than destruction—uncertainty.
Kael stood in the center of it, his body flickering between moments—his past, his present, and the corruption that had shaped his future. His breath was uneven, his sword trembling in his grip as his golden-ringed eyes flickered erratically. The Rift no longer surged to protect him.
The corruption was slipping.
His mind was caught between two forces—the Rift’s lingering grasp, and the memories Ethan was forcing to the surface.
Ethan, standing only a few feet away, didn’t attack. He didn’t press forward. He didn’t strike the finishing blow.
Instead—he spoke.
"Kael," Ethan said, his voice steady, but beneath it, there was an urgency. A desperation. "You’re not the Rift Emperor. You never were. That was something the Rift made you into.** But you—**" He took a step forward, his golden aura pulsing gently, not as a weapon, but as a light. A beacon.
"—You are Kael Varyn."
Kael’s entire body locked up.
His fingers twitched. The Rift’s power within him flickered violently, struggling against something deep, something ancient—his own past.
Ethan took another step. "You were the knight who stood at my side, who dreamed of a world worth fighting for. You weren’t a destroyer. You weren’t a god. You were—" He exhaled. "You were my friend."
Kael’s jaw clenched. He turned sharply, his eyes burning with fury, but it wasn’t true rage. It was something else. Fear. Confusion. He didn’t want to hear it. Didn’t want to remember.
"Shut up!" he roared, his voice shaking. "I am not that man anymore!"
He swung his sword, violet lightning erupting from the blade in an uncontrolled arc.
Ethan didn’t dodge.
He raised his own sword—not to counter, not to wound, but to block. To stop Kael without hurting him. The clash of their weapons sent a golden shockwave across the battlefield, but this time, Kael was the one who stumbled back.
For the first time, he was the one struggling.
Mia, Orion, Nefera, and Selene—watching from the edge of the battlefield—felt the shift.
"The Rift’s hold is breaking," Selene murmured, her golden eyes watching Kael carefully. "He’s slipping through its grasp."
Orion exhaled sharply, gripping his twin blades. "Then Ethan has to bring him back before it pulls him under again."
Nefera crossed her arms, frowning. "If he doesn’t, Kael won’t survive this."

Kael’s Mind Fractures – The Rift’s Final Grip
Kael’s breath came faster. His vision blurred, not from exhaustion, but from something deeper.
Memories.
They were coming back, crashing into him like waves against a fractured shore.
"Kael, where are you going?"
"Lysara, I—"
Kael’s eyes widened, his grip on his sword tightening until his knuckles turned white.
No. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
He wouldn’t let this happen.
The Rift’s whispers—ones that had once given him purpose, once filled the void inside him—grew louder, clawing at his mind. It didn’t want to lose him.
> "Do not listen."
"You are beyond them now."
"You are the Rift Emperor."
Kael growled, raising his sword again. His hand shook. The corruption flared, desperate, trying to burn away the past, trying to erase the emotions he had long buried.
He had to fight.
If he didn’t, he would have to face himself.
And that was the one thing Kael feared more than anything.
Ethan saw it—the battle within Kael was no longer physical. It was a war for his soul.
And so Ethan lowered his sword.
Kael froze.
"Kael," Ethan said, his voice softer now, but no less commanding. "You don’t have to fight me."
Kael staggered back.
Ethan took another step toward him. His golden aura wasn’t attacking, wasn’t burning—it was steady. Warm. Reaching out.
"You don’t have to run from it anymore," Ethan continued, his voice unwavering. "From Solmara. From Lysara. From who you were before all of this."
Kael let out a shaky breath. His body flickered worse now, pieces of himself glitching out of existence. The Rift was failing to hold him together.
His golden-ringed eyes locked onto Ethan’s. "I can’t."
Ethan held his ground. "Yes, you can."
Kael shook his head violently.
"You don’t understand, Ethan," he snapped. His voice cracked. "I can’t go back. I can’t undo what I’ve done. I can’t be that man again!"
Ethan took another step. "Then don’t."
Kael’s breath caught.
"You don’t have to be who you were," Ethan said. "But you can be something more than this."
Kael’s sword trembled. His fingers loosened.
His heart—beating so violently against his ribs—slowed.
The Rift’s whispers weakened.
> "You are ours."
"You belong to us."
"You cannot leave."
But they weren’t as loud as they once were.
Kael clenched his fists. He looked at Ethan—really looked at him.
And for the first time in centuries, Kael didn’t feel alone.

Kael Begins to Break – The Rift’s Final Warning
A sharp crack echoed through the battlefield.
Kael stiffened.
The Rift’s power—**its last defense—**lashed out, wrapping around him like chains, trying to pull him back into its grasp.
Mia gasped. "Ethan—Kael’s form—it’s—"
Orion’s visor flickered. "He’s destabilizing."
Nefera’s eyes narrowed. "The Rift’s trying to erase him."
Kael staggered, clutching his chest as violet energy coiled around him, pulsing violently. His breath hitched, his entire body flickering out of existence for a split second before snapping back.
He was disappearing.
Kael lifted his gaze, realization settling into his golden-ringed eyes. His past self existed now.
Which meant this version of him never should have.
Ethan’s jaw clenched. "No. I’m not letting this happen."
He moved.
In a single step, he closed the distance, gripping Kael’s shoulder before the Rift could take him. His golden aura flared, pushing back against the corruption.
For the first time—Ethan wasn’t just rejecting the Rift.
He was overpowering it.
Kael gasped, his form stabilizing just for a moment.
His golden-ringed eyes met Ethan’s, filled with something fragile. Something raw.
"...You really meant it," Kael whispered.
Ethan’s grip tightened. "Of course I did."
Kael exhaled, something inside him shattering.
And then—
He collapsed forward, the Rift screaming in protest as its hold on him finally broke.
The battle wasn’t over.
But for the first time—Kael was no longer fighting alone.
