The Military Queen-Chapter 31 - 23 Maggie’s Crying
Chapter 31: 23 Maggie's Crying
"Mom. Please, give my mom back to me, my little brother needs her," the desperate cries, hoarse and intermittent, echoed around the perimeter of the empty military region.
NPC Maggie was cradling an unconscious Bosha, kneeling on the muddy ground. The red dots on Bosha's body had turned into red patches, looking like clusters of crimson plums on his delicate skin, eerily beautiful.
About ten meters away from NPC Maggie, Colonel Washington and the soldiers of the rebel army glared ahead.
In just over a week, Bosha's condition had rapidly deteriorated, at this rate, he would...
"Maggie," No. 0 pushed through the crowd, heading towards NPC Maggie.
"No. 0," our soldiers called out. They had been in a standoff with the rebel army for over half an hour. When the enemy's first ammunition came in, the soldiers of Kapa Military District had retaliated without hesitation.
Compared to weapons and combat strength, they did not fear the rebel army. But just as our forces were preparing to meet the threat head-on, the young girl appeared with her patient in arms.
With her straw-colored hair tangled, NPC Maggie looked up, her eyes stinging, the figures and voices in front of her seemed so distant.
Mom had left, and No. 0 hadn't shown up either. Colonel Washington blamed her for letting the Government Army go. Bosha kept running a fever, he could no longer wash dishes, no longer pestered her with stories. He was dying.
"Stop, Government Army," Colonel Washington stared fiercely at No. 0, "Do not come any closer to Maggie."
"No. 0, get back to the formation right now," the temporary commander of Kapa Military District also prevented No. 0 from acting recklessly.
No. 0 paused in her step, fingering the ends of her hair on her forehead, the sunlight jumping in the open field. She took a breath and stepped forward again.
The guns of both sides were aimed at No. 0, "All units, commands, for defectors who cannot discern friend from foe, shoot on sight," the temporary commander warned for the last time.
"Is it really that important whether it's the Government Army or the rebel army?" A sudden sorrow wandered in No. 0's heart, "No matter which side, my identity is that of a soldier. You can fire at the enemy, but you should not fire at them. They are still children, children are innocent, you cannot destroy their hope." No. 0 ignored them and moved forward, the wind blew her hair tips into her eyes, wetting them.
The soldiers of both sides still held their guns, but in everyone's eyes stirred emotions different from before.
Hope, this word, shook every adult soldier's heart. They had come here, shouldering guns, all for a common hope. Yet the children not far away, orphaned and infirm – who would provide hope for them?
Every soldier, from the day they swore an oath to enlist, was required to clearly distinguish right from wrong, black from white, and choose the side to which they pledged loyalty. But living in this world is not as simple as solving a true or false test question with a definite answer.
"Maggie, give Bosha to me," Xia You took Bosha from her and quickly transferred him to the waiting medics.
When she turned around to look for NPC Maggie again, she was standing where she had knelt earlier, her eyes still puzzled, staring blankly at No. 0, "Maggie, come here."
A bullet exploded at No. 0's feet, Colonel Washington provocatively looked at No. 0, "Maggie, come back."
NPC Maggie stood in place, neither advancing nor retreating. Slowly, she lowered her head, gazing at her own knees.
"Let them come with us; we can offer the most reasonable medical treatment. You must immediately leave the Kapa Military District, and we will not pursue any damages incurred today," the acting commander weighed his options, attempting to negotiate with Colonel Washington to defuse today's incident.
"Bosha can be handed over to you, but Maggie cannot. And hand over Expert Sofia. Stop barking orders; have Patton speak with me. You're not qualified," the predatory glint in Colonel Washington's eyes. She placed her machine gun on the ground, creating a deep crater.
"Stop fighting," Number 0 looked towards Maggie, wondering where the clever and brave Little Maggie had gone, "Maggie, you decide for yourself."
NPC Maggie raised her head again, looking towards Number 0, "Number 0, did you promise you would bring my mom back?" Her childlike voice carried a heartbreaking quality. She was accusing Number 0 of deceiving her.
Little Eight realized that any further inappropriate words or actions from Number 0 might lead to punishment or even execution by the Kapa Military District. "Number 0, you must..."
"I was just looking for an opportunity. Trust me." Before Number 0 could finish, NPC Maggie and Number 0 both immediately turned around. Behind them, a roar erupted from the ranks of the rebel army.
"Take Maggie and leave," Colonel Washington's voice pierced Number 0's eardrums, but no one else heard the Colonel's warning.
A dozen small lizard Dinosaurs and an astonishingly large Tyrannosaurus rex burst into the rebel troops.
"Full retreat," the acting commander shouted, as infrared radars and thermal guns were reactivated. Dozens of soldiers rapidly retreated.
Number 0 was close to the military region's gate, now merely needing to follow the main forces to rush back. The shattered gate could still hold for a while under the defense of various modern weapons.
The scene was chaotic; the rebel army's losses were severe, and the carnivorous Dinosaurs that suddenly invaded the camp seemed to be starving. Despite having heavy weaponry, the ill-equipped rebels were still at a disadvantage in the fight.
"Maggie," amidst the chaos, Number 0 searched for NPC Maggie's figure. She couldn't see Maggie; the dust and bits of grass blurred her vision.
A lizard Dinosaur pounced on something, its sharp teeth gleaming in a way that caught Number 0's attention. Beneath the green python-colored Dinosaur, a corner of a child's skirt fluttered up.
"Damn it," Number 0 pulled out her needle shooting gun, shouting loudly, "Hey, look here, you big oaf."
The needle gun fired. The lizard Dinosaur felt an itch on its body and stopped tearing at its prey, looking around.
"It's useless?" Number 0 muttered to herself, "Eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, eyes, nose, mouth, tongue."
Behind her, the gates of the Kapa Military District clanged shut, sinking Number 0's heart. Even Colonel Washington felt a glimmer of despair.
"Eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, the eyes, the eyes," Number 0 looked towards the skirt corner under the feet of the lizard Dinosaur, now stained with blood.
"Bastard," a pain throbbed in Number 0's temple, her pupils began to constrict, and once again, she aimed the Ghost Needle Gun at the lizard Dinosaur.
